Wrestling is more than just a sport; it is a way of life. And for those who enjoy its opportunities, it is something that takes the mind off of all of life’s troubling times, and puts one man against another to get their hand raised. Competition makes everything evolve, and there is no other sport that epitomizes what competition truly is. Wrestling spans the entire globe, and although it incorporates several different styles and many National and World events, remains overlooked by most.
The first style of wrestling is Folkstyle. Folkstyle is mainly wrestled in College, High School and Middle School Events, although some kids practice and participate in elementary school. Folkstyle has a rich heritage going back to the beginning days of the United States and has touched every part of American Life. The first real traces of the development of wrestling date back to Sumerians over 5,000 years ago. The Epic of Gilgamesh written in cuneiform, the sculptures and low beliefs, are numerous sources that reveal the first referred competitions, accompanied by music. There are also many historical and archaeological traces of wrestling in Ancient Egypt. Worthy of mentioning, among them is in particular the drawings discovered in the tombs of Beni-Hassan representing of 400 couples of wrestling. Many United States Presidents were Folkstyle wrestlers. This list includes Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, and the speaker of American House of Representatives, Mr. Denny Hastert, who also became a distinguished Folkstyle coach. Folkstyle wrestling is the fifth most popular sport in American High Schools and most commonly practiced style of wrestling in the United States. The pinnacle of the sport, the national university tournament, is br...

...lives. Without wrestling, there would be no fighting, no self-defense options or maneuvers, or any way for someone to be in the best shape of their life, without being in the military or special workout programs. Involved and used in everyday life, wrestling is not given the credit or respect that it deserves, for the sole fact that it is no football or basketball, and people don’t usually grow up doing it everyday in the local neighborhoods. Vince McMahon’s WWF is a multi-million dollar corporation and has been wildly successful in capturing the sports entertainment market. “Monday Night Raw,” the weekly soap opera on TNN, is one of the three most watched cable shows each week. In addition, the WWF has weekly wrestling shows on UPN and MTV. Personally, I am caught up in the phenomenon. I set aside my Monday evenings to watch Monday Night Football and professional wrestling. I enjoy attempting to figure out the storylines before they unfold and attempt to guess the action that may happen in the next segment.
You see sports everywhere, on your TV and even your local park. The value of sports in the average American is astronomical, sports is a major priority in people’s life. Sports teaches young kids how to be successful (and not successful) at life. There is so much that goes into sports that people who never have played will never understand. With each sport there is specific skill that one must master to be good, and with that takes hours and hours of hard work. You can talk about a certain individual’s skill and capabilities that make him great, but the real value of sports lies within a person. Sports creates determination and a competiveness that can be used in other areas of life, not just sports. There are millions of kids who attempt to become professional athletes but as the level of competition increases the number of athletes decreases, very few of them ever becoming a professional athlete but they are able to take what they have learned from sports into different professions in life. When a kid spends hours in the backyard perfecting his swing it can translate to the kid spending hours of hard work in his job. Companies and business like to hire ex-athletes because they already know what kind of person they are, hardworking and
When we first arrived I’d thought we’d taken a wrong turn and went to a traveling gypsy convention by mistake. The whole field outside the school was filled with tents of various sizes and colors. 200 wrestlers, about thirty of which were girls, filtered about the area. As my soon-to-be teammates and I headed to the first practice, anxiety gnawed at my stomach like a dog with a bone (FL). I wanted to impress everybody, and prove that I could make it in this sport. Before we started, the coach patted me on the shoulder. “I’ve got your back all right.” he told me. I smiled and nodded. At least one person was looking out for me.
Fireworks as if it were the fourth of July. Thousands of people in an arena and billions watching around the world anxiously awaiting the arrival of their favorite superstar. Suddenly the crowd erupts as a man comes strutting down to the squared circle. Accompanied by a beautiful busty young woman, the wrestler is cheered by his loyal fans and booed by his enemies. Soon , another man enters the stadium the same way as the first man. The two men stip into the ring with a certain sense of cockiness about themselves. Before the referee can even tell everyone that the match has started, the two men are already battling in the “squared circle';. During the fight there are many suspenseful moments. Brutally beating each other for five minutes the match is finally over with some bloodshed. Today people are taking wwf professional wrestling to the extreme. WWF wrestling is one of the most watched shows on television today. WWF stands for the World Wrestling Federation. Wrestling started sometime it the mid to late sixties and has changed dramatically over the years. When wrestling first came to be the wrestlers weren’t like they were today. Back in the olden days of WWF wrestling, the storyline of wrestling wasn’t as vulgar, and the industry was not as wide spread throughout the world. Today the whole industry of the WWF is benefitting from merchandise being sold all over the globe. Even though many people may consider wrestling to be fake, know that some aspects are very real.

The history of scholastic wrestling in the United States is closely tied to the development of college wrestling. The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association held its first tournament in 1905, which soon sparked many more wrestling tournaments for both college students and high school students. College and high school wrestling grew especially after the standardization of the NCAA wrestling rules, which applied early on to both collegiate and scholastic wrestling (with high school modifications). More colleges, universities, and junior colleges began offering dual meets and tournaments, including championships and having organized wrestling seasons. There were breaks in wrestling seasons because of World War I and World War II, but in the high schools especially, state association wrestling championships sprung up in different regions throughout the 1930s and 1940s. As amateur wrestling grew after World War II, various collegiate athletic conferences also increased the number and quality of their wrestling competition, with more wrestlers making the progression of wrestling in high school, being recruited, and entering collegiate competition.(Wickpedia.org) Today, the various state high school associations continue to also host annual wrestling championships for individuals and for teams. There can be no middle school wrestlers wrestling with the high school. All middle school wrestlers that do this can have their wrestling career taken away, or they can earn severe punishment. you need certain equipment for wrestling. Wrestling is a mirror image of life. Many times wrestling superstars will get injured while fighting an opponent. In June of 1998 Mick Foley was the persona Mankind. He was booked to wrestle a wrestler called the Undertaker. The match was to take place in a steel cage. At the last moment Mankind decided to climb up the cage and fight on top. While he was up there, Undertaker threw him off of the twenty foot cage and Mankind dislocated his left shoulder. They took him off on a stretcher but he battled back only to have a tooth driven through the roof of his mouth up into his nose. He could not call time out during the match although he most likely wanted to. He had to keep wrestling eventhough he suffered from a concussion from the fall off of the cage. That relates directly to life in the fact that you cannot call time out if you get hurt, the world will not stop for something, it just keeps going and people have to just go with the flow.
"The earliest depiction of a fencing match is a relief in the temple of Medin at Habu, near Luxor in Egypt, built by Ramses III about 1190 BC. This relief depicts a practice bout or match, because the sword points are covered and the swordsmen are parrying with shields strapped to their left arms and are wearing masks (tied to their wigs), large bibs, and padding over their ears" (Beumont).
Two boxers circle the ring, while waiting for an opening to deliver a knockout to their opponent. The crowd goes wild, the viewers have paid a substantial amount of money to witness a man falling to the mat; unconscious. Boxing is a martial art and combat sport that often turns into permanent damage. The intention of boxing is to win by hurting one’s opponent with delivering blows to their body and sometimes knocking them unconscious. The euphemistic of boxing is a human blood sport. Although boxing is a popular and active sport, there are other sports who do not intentionally try and physically hurt their rivalry. Boxing should be more controlled as a sport because it encourages violence, causes head injuries, and is dangerous.
Today, as opposed to old-time wrestling, it is just a spectator event with people cheering
Sports were practiced and watched as early as the Mesopotamian civilization. Around 3000 B.C.E., the Mesopotamian civilization had public sport performances similar to modern boxing and wrestling (Kyle 26). Figure 1 is a stone craving from 3000 B.C.E. that shows Mesopotamian boxing. Wrestling is the most widely depicted sport in Mesopotamian texts and artwork. The most famous literary image of the wrestler in Mesopotamia was in “The Epic of Gilgamesh,” which describes a wrestling match between Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk, and Enkidu. Gilgamesh and Enkidu “were
There are many different ways to observe people in order to gather information. For this assignment we had to observe a group of people and analyze their nonverbal behaviors. I decided to go observe my friend Isaiah coach his wrestling practice. He holds a private wrestling practice for about four to five kids a couple times a week. Three of the kids are in eight grade and the other two are freshman in high school. The location for this practice is by Lakewood. One of the kid’s dad owns a few acres of land where their house is and he built a nice shed in the backyard that has wrestling mats and weight lifting equipment in it. When I went to observe the practice, I noticed that once all the kids showed up to shed Isaiah got them going by getting
Truly, without the hundreds of fans that swear allegiance to wrestling, there simply would be no sport. The wrestlers go about entertaining the masses with outrageous matches and just a tough of cheesy drama. As proof of this, Putterman states:
