Wrestling is broken into four different types based on rules and style; Free style, Professional, Greko Roman, and Collegiant. Free style is usually started after school is let out for the summer. The rules of Free style wrestling are pretty simple. Both wrestlers start in the standing position for all three rounds. Each round is two minutes long, and the person with the most points at the end of the third round wins. Free style wrestling is done on a mat, approximately two inches thick and is half the size of a basketball court. The out of bounds area on the mat is marked by a circle; so no one gets hurt by being thrown off the mat. There are several ways to score points, takedowns, throws, and pins. Takedowns are when one wrestler has the other wrestler under control on the mat, all four extremities are touching the mat. In Free style, after a takedown both wrestlers start back at the standing position. Takedowns are worth one point, because using the legs is not favorable in Free style.
Throws are exactly what is sounds like, one wrestler throws the other one. Two to four points can be awarded depending on the height of the throw. The higher the more points. After a throw both wrestlers start back at the standing position. A pin in Free style is when one wrestlers shoulder blades roll on the mat. You do not have to hold a wrestler down for a count of three to get a pin in Free style. Free style is basically practice for the Collegiant wrestling season. Professional wrestling is done in a boxing ring, the rules are vague, but the sport is very entertaining. They can hit each other with chairs, body slam from the top ropes, and even throw each other out of the ring! I think the only rule they have is no biting. Professional wrestling is done for the entertainment of others.
Greko Roman wrestling also has three rounds and is played on a mat. The real difference in Greko Roman is that you can not use the legs at all. To score points in this type of wrestling you must throw your opponent. The higher you throw your opponent the more points you receive. You can win if you throw
The objective is to win each rally by serving or returning the ball so the opponent is unable to keep the ball in play. A rally is over when a player (or team in doubles) is unable to hit the ball before it touches the floor twice, is unable to return the ball in such a manner that it touches the front wall before it touches the floor, or when a hinder is called.
The fighter is then ready to initiate the movement phase: extension at the knee with a relative angle to the thigh of about 180 degrees, lateral rotation of the grounded foot between 90 and 120 degrees, and additional lateral flexion of the spine.
Have you ever wondered, “What is the difference between MMA and boxing?” Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights originated as hand-to-hand combat performed as a sport called Pankration from the greek words Pan and Kratas, meaning “all powers” (Shamrock). Often a practitioner of one of the skill groups in martial arts challenged a practitioner of a different skill for ultimate bragging rights (Shamrock). In 393C.E. Roman emperor Theodosius the first banned the Olympic games, spelling the end of Pankration as a popular sport (Shamrock). This style of fighting later resurfaced in the twentieth century in Brazil via a combat sport known as vale tudo”,anything goes” (“Encyclopedia Britannica”). MMA
Lucha Libre in Spanish means, "free fight." And in the wrestling world it is just that, a "free fight." The idea of high-flying was first realized in Mexico and Japan and became a very hot commodity in the mid-90's.
The rules of our game are simple, really: anytime one of us sees someone wearing red and white stripes, we can yell out, “Waldo!” and a point is added to our tally (actually, we lost track of the official tally years ago... By now, it would probably be in the thousands). This game is no mere fun activity used to pass the time; it is more cut-throat than any match you could find on ESPN.
Of the 258,000 athletes that wrestle in high school, only 7,408 are able to continue their career as a wrestler in college (NCAA 1). 2.7% of wrestlers are faced with multiple adversities from weight gain, to the long seven minutes of nonstop action on the mat. Although the seven minutes go by quick when spectating, when you’re on the mat it seems never ending. A lot of work goes behind one's success on the mat. To be successful in college wrestling one must cut weight efficiently, lift weights, and warm up effectively before every match.
Steve Austin's strength is envied by some of the world's best wrestlers. This is to be expected because for any man to become Heavy Weight Champion, he would have to be strong. On numerous occasions he has lifted 300 pound men over his head and tossed them out of the ring into the crowd, or body slammed them into tables with ease. "Stone Cold" has been faced with some of the most difficult tests of strength, like when he faced Mankind, a notoriously strong wrestler. When Austin gained the upper hand in the match, Mankind's tag team partner, 355 pound Kane, stepped into the ring to help. However, Kane's strength combined with Mankind's was no match for the "Stone Cold Stunner". The "Stunner" is Austin's finishing move ,in which he grasps his opponent's neck, twists so they are back to back, then jumps into the air with the force of a rocket, and falls putting so much pressure on his neck that he goes unconscious. This powerful move gained Austin his fame and the loyalty he receives from his fans.
Wrestling is more than just a sport; it is a way of life. And for those who enjoy its opportunities, it is something that takes the mind off of all of life’s troubling times, and puts one man against another to get their hand raised. Competition makes everything evolve, and there is no other sport that epitomizes what competition truly is. Wrestling spans the entire globe, and although it incorporates several different styles and many National and World events, remains overlooked by most.
There are many aspects of physics found on the floor. The gymnast performs on a floor that "measures 12 x 12 meters, with an additional safety border of 1 metre. The performance area must have a surface elasticity, to allow for power during take-off and softness for landing." (FIG) The surface elasticity found in the floor mat gives the gymnast extra bounce which increases her momentum.
The matts at the end of the gym can be used to build a “base”, however, if the team hides the flag in the base, there must be an easy access to get through.
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. "At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La Junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss." All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this: just to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For some these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to place, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place called the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the best of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
Once you figure out how to throw the disk, Ultimate’s a pretty easy game to learn. The game starts with both teams lining up on opposite end zones, the home team throws off to the opposing team; that starts the point.
The goal is to knock the opponent out by any mean possible. Fatal neurological damage is a real possibility from these kinds of combat sports. A man names Joao Carvalho died of a brain injury soon after competing in an amateur cage fighting match. He is not the first fighter to lose his life competing in these kinds of events Rick Sarre Professor of Law, University of South Australia. “Why Boxing and Cage Fighting Should Be Banned – but Won't Be.”
Two teams of eleven players each participate in getting the ball into the other team’s goal, thus scoring a goal. The team that has scored more goals at the end of the game wins. If both teams have scored an equal number of goals, then the game is a tie. Each team is controlled by a captain. In game play, players make an effort to create goal scoring occasions through individual control of the ball, such as dribbling, passing the ball to a team-mate, and by taking shots at the goal, that is guarded by the goalkeeper belonging to the other team....
