Every day, physicians called pediatricians are helping and treating children’s illnesses and making sure they are healthy. Dr. Ananya Mandel describes pediatrics “as the branch of medicine dealing with the health and medical care of infants, children and adolescents from birth up to the age of 18” (Ananya l). Pediatricians work with children and care about their health. Without pediatricians, children wouldn’t receive special treatment, which is highly necessary since caring for children’s health is not the same as adult care. Although being a pediatrician is very time consuming and can be emotional, it is a rewarding and interesting career. Before pediatrics, the treatment of children was done by mothers and midwives. The first pediatric hospital was Hôpital des Enfants Malades. This hospital opened in Paris in June 1802. Until 1855, the first American hospital for children was established in Philadelphia. A German doctor named Abraham Jacobi established a training program for pediatrics at New York Medical College. Later, “the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) was founded in 1930 by a group of 35 pediatricians to promote positive changes in care giving to children” (eHow 4). The group encouraged other doctors to learn about specialized treatment for children. Over the years, pediatrics has grown and keeps advancing throughout the years. A pediatrician is the fancy word for a child’s physician. Pediatricians help children by providing medical care and preventing illnesses and diseases. Pediatricians also are involved with other problems that affect children and adolescents. Pediatricians help kids with behavioral difficulties, social stresses and depression or anxiety disorders. While the concept of the profession began in the 17th century, our paper will focus more on the contemporary American history starting in the 1940s. Dr. Amos Johnson, a founder of the American Board of Family Practice, hired a hospital orderly named Henry Treadwell to assist in the daily activities of his office. Dr. Johnson’s practice in Garland, North Carolina, initiated the spread of the physician assistant model across the state. Dr. Eugene Stead and his general medicine residents at Duke University took interest in this idea. In 1942, due to the lack of adequate medical care during World War II, Dr. Stead created a three year medical doctorate fast-track program. This sparked the idea that perhaps one day he could implement a similar program to alleviate the physician shortage in the United States.

Upon doing some research, I found that a pediatrician's main duty, and the type of the work done in the career. According to Gaither (2016), the author examines who a pediatrician is and what this chosen career does in health care. According to Gaither (2016), a pediatrician’s main duty is to take care and to examine children to make sure they are in a healthy condition and are developing correctly. It also mentions that picking a pediatrician is a very important choice for the future and well being of your child. However, to goes on to mention that pediatricians are very important to have because they have extensive knowledge of a child’s health, and a pediatrician can spot illnesses quickly and diagnose them effectively. Psychiatric nurse practitioners, act more like a counselor to the patients that need someone to talk to, than a doctor. A pediatric nurse practitioner is also another popular field that one might go into. Pediatric Nurses work with children, and alongside the main doctor. Pediatric nurses do a lot of the same tasks as a regular nurse. They draw blood, check vital signs, can perform physical examinations, and order diagnostic tests. However, the job of a pediatric nurse goes beyond regular nurses. They must have a caring relationship not only with the patient they are tending to, but also the patient’s family. Parents usually prefer a pediatric nurse over a regular nurse due to the caring relationship they carry. This is well known by the nurses as the caring process. During this process the nurse must help the child and the child’s family step by step with anything they may need at the time. The pediatric nurse provides support, care, and information on how to prevent future problems. Pediatric nursing can be defined as “the practice of nursing with children, youth, and their families across the health continuum, including health promotion, illness management, and health restoration" (Barnsteiner et al). Therefore, you can see from that statement alone there is more than one job to be done by a pediatric nurse. A pediatric nurse can see anywhere from 80 to 100 children a day. They take appointments, walk-ins, and sometimes make home visits. Only when the pediatric nurse finds an abnormality will they refer and send the child t...

Florence Nightingale emphasized the children’s nursing care needs in 1859. She wrote a book Notes on Nursing. A quote from her famous book is “The nursing of young children stands out as a division of our work needing special study. We have no branch that is more important.... Let us be willing to do anything which will accomplish the greatest good for the child, and honor our profession by becoming more and more efficient in our ability to care for sick children" (p 115). The first pediatric clinic opened in New York City in 1862. Originally these clinics focused on developing treatments for childhood diseases, such as measles and scarlet fever. Now the main purposes are check ups and doctor appointments Loretta Ford and Henry Sliver opened the first nurse practitioner training program in 1965. In training, the students studied 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for 1 to 2 years. After graduating from school, some students worked in hospitals, but most looked for private jobs in middle and upper class homes. The pay was poor and the hours were irregular.

Poor child births outcome cause greater mortality risks, and higher odds of poor future health. This paper will study the statistical data regarding the suggested number of prenatal case visits as considered in healthy birth outcomes. It is estimated that every year almost 4 million U.S. women give birth, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and that nearly one-third of them will experience some type of pregnancy related problems. This is primarily relevant in the U.S., which has one of the highest infant mortality rates among 18 developed nations. The lack of prenatal care for women who are unable to financially afford it, or don’t see the need of it, is mainly to blame for the thousands of low birthweight babies born in the U.S. every year.
Many people in this world want to make a difference in life. However, most people do not want to put in all the effort that it takes to do so. The job of a pediatrician is life-changing to many. Unfortunately, it takes drive and effort that many people do not have, to become a pediatrician. A pediatrician’s job is a highly-skilled and interesting job because he or she has the privilege to deal with and help as many children as possible.
Another good aspect of this job is that they only focus on the health of children, rather than all of the age groups. An adult and a child are so different, they are nearly two different species. If a child is brought to a doctor who specializes in all age groups, the child would not be getting the same kind of attention that he or she would be getting, compared to that from a doctor who specializes only in children. Doctors that specialize in all age groups are used to make quick, rough, and fundamental actions needed for the healing of the patient. One does not simply treat a child the same way an adult would be treated.

Working with children can be very different than working with adults. When working with children it is important to gain an understanding of the child, their family or care provider as well as the environment in which they are in. The purpose of this paper is to discuss what excites us as well as concerns us about pediatrics as well as discuss a nursing theory to guide our practice in pediatrics as well as provide a timeline of our activities.
