The information acquired over the semester, whether through text or visual media, vividly brought the importance of knowing how one’s gender is identified and developed.
Gender began as a big part of society many years ago. Feminist scholars have shown how gender is a central component of social and political life. As well as class, race, and sexuality, gender is now understood as one of the essential aspects which shape our lives and determines the distribution of power in our society.
When discussing the meaning of gender identity, each and every person has a different view and perception. Most times, these views are instilled upon them throughout their childhood whether they are fully aware of it or not. As a result, some children feel forced to conform to the stereotypical gender roles and identities defined by society. For me, however, that was never a problem.
Gender Identity is a strong topic that many discuss in day to day living. It’s important to understand that gender identity has three different terms, according to Dictionary.com. A lot of people have many different opinions about gender identity. You’re probably thinking There is only two genders in this world male and female. I too, believe that there are only two genders in this world and that people are born straight. Grysman explains, “Gender is among the earliest categories that infants become aware of, and from toddlerhood on, children categorize both themselves and others as female or male.” (613.) People are not given a choice to be who they want to be, since your gender is assigned at birth.
According to the DSM-5, gender dysphoria is “the distress that may accompany the incongruence between one’s experienced or expressed gender and one’s assigned gender” (American Psychological Association, 2013). Even though studies have shown that not every individual suffers from distress, it is still possible that an individual might suffers from distress due to the hormonal treatment or surgical procedure(s). In the past, gender dysphoria has been referred to as “gender identity”. However, gender identity, by the DSM-IV definition is “a category of social identity and refers to an individual’s identification as male, female, or occasionally, some category other than male or female” (American Psychological Association, 2000). Individuals that identify themselves with another gender tend to change their sex, which has been proven to be a hard and long process.
According to the research by American Psychological Association, a transsexual is a person who changes his or her
Everyone’s gender is socially constructed. From the time we’re born until the time we die, there are influences come from society that assemble our gender. Gender is basically a creation of what is considered to be masculine or feminine. There are different ways we show gender, we determine gender through gender assignment, gender identity, gender expression, gender ranking, and gender acquisition. Gender assignment is given at birth from the physical body type. Gender identity is the gender one feels a part of. Gender expression is how one performs gender according to those around him or her. Gender ranking is valuing on gender over another gender. Gender acquisition is how one learns gender.
This spectrum can contain millions of different gender identities and orientations because every person might explain their feeling in a different or unique way. These genders tend to receive negative influence and responses because some tend to think that they are not a real thing or that these individuals are just looking for attention. Some of these include but are not limited to; Gender Fluid, Androgynous, Bigender, or Genderqueer. These genders are each unique in their description and how they may be categorized when observed by a professional therapist or psychologist. Transsexualism is another of these non-heteronormative gender based feelings or identity. Transsexual people are unique in the way that the chemistry and anatomy of their body do not align with the gender their brain wants to be represented as. Both non-conforming genders and Trans individuals are grouped with a diagnosis of a mental disorder, this being called Gender Identity Dysphoria or GID
Gender dysphoria (GD) is the distress a person feels as a result of the conflict they are experiencing between their assigned sex and desired gender. This can occur in anybody and at any age. At as early as age three a child becomes aware of the differences between a boy and a girl and can label themselves as such. They will develop a stable sense of what their gender identity is, so it is at as early as this age a child can experience GD. A child can express their gender identity in many ways, some being how they dress themselves, what they prefer to be called, wanting to play and participate in activities usually associated with the other sex, and desiring their friends to be of the other sex. But GD is still very uncertain, and can be experienced
Today in our society, many people use their gender to identify their sex, but your gender does not identify you it is your sex. Gender and sex are two completely different things
...h genderqueer individuals took something old and turned it into something new. These individuals can’t identify themselves with female or male because they feel more in between or outside of female and male dichotomy. The study showed that these individuals took linguistic features from their original place and transformed it into something new. The impact that this study leaves on sexology is that genderqueer individuals don’t see themselves as being neither masculine nor feminine. They don’t feel like people understand them and their gender role. Genderqueer individuals take their linguistic features and change themselves into new individuals. They don’t want to be categorized as in between. They want to show their own personalities with a new name “genderqueer” by which people will understand me.
There are many different diagnosed disorders known to society, each disorder, with the many symptoms and side effects, serious in its own effect. Many disorders have symptoms that impact numerous areas of a person’s life and cause distress for the one suffering from these symptoms. Gender identity shapes how we think and influences our behaviors. Most people identify their gender with the biological sex determined by genitalia; however, some experience discrepancy between biological sex and the feeling of being born as the wrong gender. According to American Accreditation Health Care Commission, gender identity disorder is a conflict between a person's physical gender and the gender he or she identifies with (Health Central). In “Gender Identity Disorder : A Misunderstood, Diagnosis” Kristopher J. Cook says, “Gender identity disorder denotes a strong and persistent desire to be of the other sex (or the insistence that one is of the other sex), together with persistent discomfort about one’s own sex or a sense of inappropriateness in the role assigned to one’s own sex.” (DOCUMENT) As with any disorder, there are many hardships for those that are struggling with Gender Identity Disorder, also known as GID. Many who have this disorder often find themselves battling depression due to insecurities with who they are and the unacceptance from society. This depression will often lead to suicide attempts and some, unfortunately, succeed. A Truth ma...
