How important is First Line Supervisor training?
Once an officer feels the need to make a difference in his or her organization, they have the option to level up in the ranks and become a supervisor. Becoming a supervisor comes with a plenty of responsibilities and benefits that contributes to a good work/life balance. With this in mind, being a supervisor also comes with a great deal of responsibilities such as having to make a schedule that accommodates officers as much as possible, handle complaint whether it’s from employees or non-employees, and/or report to a supervisor above his or her level. Not to mention, due to being supervisors being the authority figures of organizations, having a better schedule and a higher salary, it looks appealing to the subordinate staff.
In addition, First Line Supervisors play a crucial role in organizations. In organizations, direct supervisors structure the work environment of employees. For example, they communicate job roles and expectations, provide feedback to employees, and relay information about the broader organization (Ingram and Lee, 2015). These roles also include motiving the team,

In this instance, I totally agree Sergeant Rick’s decision. He was fairly new to the position as a Sergeant (supervisor), therefore, if Officer Johnson was his “friend” he would have understood his reasoning for the decision he made. It’s a complete difference when a person transforms from an officer to supervisor. Sergeant Rick gave Officer Johnson options, but they were not available. Sergeant Rick followed the policy and since his Lieutenant did not his back, it showed the character and leadership style of that Lieutenant. This situation was taken personally instead of professionally. What’s the point of having a policy if it is not enforced? Not to mention, Sergeant Johnson had a reputation for using false sick
Supervisors, running a company, need to have 100% accountability of their employees. This is so that if someone else asks about a certain employee, the supervisor can give an accurate record of when the employee came in, where they can be found, and when their shift ends.
Being an advisor to the chain of command is extremely important for the Warrant officer. No successful leader in the world has made a decision without talking to an advisor. A great example of this is during WWII, the German were winning the war until Hitler stop listening to his military advisor which lead to the down fall the German Army. There are two types of advisor good and bad. If a Warrant Officer is a good advisor they will give out timely and correct advice, keep relevant with in their field, have a great understanding of the commanders’ intent, and stay neutral. If a Warrant Officer is a bad advisor they will give out bad information, be out of touch with what is going on in their field, and will only looking out for themselves. Being an advisor is where the Warrant Officer gains and holds most their
Introduction What does it mean to be an effective supervisor? Before taking this class, I thought that if a supervisor is able get their employees to work effectively, and efficiently, then the person is an effective supervisor. I didn’t realize until taking this class that supervisors do so much more. After learning more about the other tasks supervisors do like planning, being effective listeners, and motivating employees, I have a better understanding of effective supervision. I am aware that I have had supervisory experiences.
It is key, when supervisors are employing a developmental approach of supervision, to identify the current stage the supervisee is in and to provide feedback and support appropriate to that particular developmental stage, whilst at the
I believe the chain of command is important in a police agency for many reasons. It is a roadmap that shows the route within the organization that order would flow coming down through the organization or that requests flow going up the organization, like a two-way street. The chain of command also establishes formal lines of communication within the department for organizational purposes and it must be used by everyone to communicate formally. This will eliminate crucial departmental problems. For example, if the chief administrative level does not follow the chain of command downward and gives an order directly to the patrol officer, this could cause confusion. For example, the supervisory level might feel that it is alright to do the same thing sending information up the chain. The purpose of the chain of command is to show individuals who their bosses are, from the chief
It is imperative for supervisors to focus on what is required in order for his/her employees to accomplish their job. They must be supportive of their employees and provide continual feedback on their job performance .Supervisor need to include their employees when making changes that effect they way they perform their jobs or finding new way to do things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees more responsibly to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a major need for promotion, pay increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.
As a duty supervisor, you are responsible for all the officers within your shift. Duty supervisor gives out orders to all the officers. He is responsible for maintaining order in the shift. He takes care of supervisory request from all the officers. If a suspect wants to talk to a supervisor, and probably file a complaint, Duty supervisor is called to the scene. The supervisor has to hear the suspect out, and to decide if the officer's decision was correct, or not. The duty supervisor has to give out patrol assignments, as well. He deals with a lot of situations, and that's why the supervisor's job isn't easy at all. It requires a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication to what you do. They need to keep their professionalism to the highest level possible, because all the officers look up to them. As a duty supervisor, you basically need to handle all your officers. You need to observe their work, and award it if they are doing a good job, or punish them if they do something that's not by the book. Supervisor has to make a correct decision about punishing people, too. That's why the position is really hard, because if you must punish someone you're good with, you need to be objective. You need to give him the punishment he deserves, because if you fail to do so, you will get disciplined as well. That's why people usually
I have asked myself, “Why do I want to be a military officer?” I want to be a military officer so I can be a role model to all Soldiers and civilians. To be an expert in a field of study, so that Soldiers approach me for advice and be a leader to look up to. An officer that knows right from wrong, willing to put the needs of their Soldiers before my own. Lead, mentor, and form young Soldiers to know what it is to be an American Soldier. To keep the traditions of being a military officer as it moves forward in our generation. This is why I want to be an officer in today’s military.
The advantage of an administrator is that they are self-governing. In addition, he has greater control of the whole department. This style of person is not concerned with the politicians, the community, or anyone outside of the police department, so this is an advantage. Furthermore, he or she does not know what is going on in the political view of the community. When it comes to the top cop, this style is basically the same as that of an administrator due to the fact that they focus more on leadership skills. When an employee is referred to as a “Top Cop”, they are given admiration by the staff of the department. Of course the disadvantages can be detrimental for an officer who does not pass the satisfactorily on an examination by a field commander. Additionally, should any top cop neglect any work in management, he or she could very well become less efficient and disorganized. Another disadvantage is this style of chief will not be able to attend any meetings at any community leaders due to the fact because he or she is only concerned with activities within the department. The politician is known to place emphasis primarily on the role externally with political leaders and groups as opposed to
Supervisors have the ability to direct, oversee, and guide employees they work among. This is significantly different then exhibiting leadership skills. Effective supervisors continuously look for ways to learn from their peers in addition to actively train and develop them to become future leaders of the organization (Willis, 2011). Supervisors usually carry out administrative duties to ensure that work is performed on time and completed correctly. Supervisor usually just verbally tell others the way things should be done. In the case of being a good leader a person would get down and dirty with other personnel to ensure things are done in a timely manner and correctly.
The leader’s role is mainly to create the framework for subordinates to make decisions and reach the objectives. In essence, this means the leader will have a support role. Without interfering in the process, the leader must ensure the subordinates are best equipped to move the organisation forward. This generally means two things: first, providing the resources for the group to operate efficiently and second, bestowing the subordinates with educational opportunities to ensure the knowledge levels within the group are
Understanding how effective discipline should be carried out will help my supervision rely on me to uphold the standards. This will prevent them from having to get involved in every instance so they can remain focused on the bigger picture items and our mission.
To achieve this, managers must undertake the following functions: * Organisation * Planning * Staffing * Directing * Controlling Leadership is just one important component of the directing function.
First, there is respect, just because you have the rank and status of an officer doesn’t mean those below you in your command are going to respect you. A lot of people are going into the army as officers thinking everyone owes them something and that they have to do what they say. All I can say to that is, you’re in for a rude awakening. As officers we should respect those below us and talk to them as a leader should not a boss especially our NCOS and PSG. I believe that they are the best asset a young officer has at his disposal due to their knowledge and
In traditional command and control structure, the upper management of the organization normally has more authority than lower-level employees. Managers of these traditional organizations usually have to tell the employees what needs to be done and the allocation of tasks. They will have to monitor the work progress of the employees and will step in to solve any problem that arises.
