To be a supervisor is indicative in being a good leader, but to be a leader doesn’t mean you are necessarily a good supervisor. As stated by Whisenand & McCain (2015), as a police officer supervisor you can identify your strengths and use them on your journey to be a leader (p.4). When someone becomes a supervisor it is usually because they are doing good work on the job and are promoted to that positon. In order to become a leader a person must display leadership qualities. For example, compassion for others, good listening skills, works well with others, can delegate fairly, and can communicate well with others. Supervisors have the ability to direct, oversee, and guide employees they work among. This is significantly different then exhibiting leadership skills. Effective supervisors continuously look for ways to learn from their peers in addition to actively train and develop them to become future leaders of the organization (Willis, 2011). Supervisors usually carry out administrative duties to ensure that work is performed on time and completed correctly. Supervisor usually just verbally tell others the way things should be done. In the case of being a good leader a person would get down and dirty with other personnel to ensure things are done in a timely manner and correctly. With all that being said, I do believe people have the ability to be both an effective supervisor as well as a good leader. In my personal experience, that hasn’t happen much but it is possible. Many times people would rather be a supervisor in order to have the capability to command over people rather than being an effective leader. Other who strive to be both don’t command over people, but rather listen, works with others on a task, and gives respect in order to receive it from others. Most employees won’t respect you as a supervisor if you do not show equally good leadership abilities on the job
Leadership is the ability to influence employees to voluntarily pursue organizational goals. Leadership is vision, enthusiasm, love, trust, passion and consistency. Management is to pursue organizational goals efficiently and effectively by integrating the work of people through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling organizations resources. Leadership and management are not the same. They are not interchangeable. Leadership is coping with change and management is coping with complexity (Williams 444).

A leader is a make up of many different attributes and qualities. An effective Leader encompasses all of the attributes which go along with facilitating ideas and allowing an organization to grow and flourish, as well as inspiring and motivating those he or she oversees to do the same. A Leader has the ability and almost the reflex action to surface when it is time for a difficult task to be accomplished or a difficult decision to be made. Leadership may be a type of management but a manager is not always a leader. “Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.”
Management is defined as the act or manner of managing, handling, direction, or control (dictionary.com). Leadership is defined as an act or instance of leading; guidance; direction (dictionary.com). They do not mean the same thing; however, it is thought that a manager should have leadership skills to be able to manage an organization. Not all managers have great leadership skills and just because a manager does not have these skills does not mean he or she is a bad manager.
I have had both the pleasure and discomfort of being led by good and bad leaders. The way I simply define leadership is by being able to do as you say. Lead from the front and Set the example.
Not all managers are leaders. There are managers that are not effective leaders, just as there are leaders that do not have a clue how to manage. The process of their working is different but sometimes they work together. Managers are maintaining the organization structure and status. On the other hand leaders are setting goal, direction, find new ways and challenging. Manager’s activities depend on human, time, money and equipment included decision making, problem solving, planning, budgeting, controlling, discipline etc. Leader’s activities depending and leading on inspiring and empowerment included inspiration, motivation, team work, make relationships, teaching and couching etc.
I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. We must also know that we can use our leadership skills in the same situations. On the other hand we have also learned that leaders are people who have an impact on those that surround them. The main difference that separates these two roles is that management is a function that must be utilized in any type of business, and leadership is the relationship that the leader has with his followers, which in turn can motivate and energize the organization.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
I agree with this statement because leadership in an organization is essential to its survival. On the other hand, supervisors also play a critical role in large establishments, but leaders and supervisors are not essentially one and the same. Both leaders and supervisors have some mutual aspects, but they also can be different significantly in some different ways as well. There are many characterizations of leadership and even leadership professionals have diverse views about it. Leadership is not about your position, power or rank, for me, leadership involves the self-awareness, identifying your weakness and strengths. I like the fact that the teacher pointed out that leadership can be found everywhere. Leaders don't necessarily exist only in a company where there are a lot of people following you. “Everyone has the potential and possibility to be a leader”. They could be the best at inspiring others, or best at solving problems or dealing with criticism. My definition of leadership is being able to follow your ambitions and desires without worrying about any consequences. Supporting this statement would be because managers and leaders have similar qualities such as being responsible, flexible, and have good communication. Though the difference between them is that managers tend to be consistent and keep things in order without any changes but a leader tend to create for the future and motivate others to accomplish what is set out for the future. In order for this to be accomplished the leader must have great motive and purpose in what they are doing. This means you have to take initiative to make changes instead of be consistent and stay the same, when staying consistent that means the leader is falling into the management category.
Leadership and management are two fundamental concepts which are involved in the effective management of organizations. Leadership in my opinion is a complex concept, which includes association of human qualities and the result of their activities. To be a great leader means not only following own visions, but also work towards company’s goals.
When I think of someone who is a great leader I automatically think about current and previous managers I have had over the years, and honestly I cannot say that any of them are the definition of a great leader. So after I looked up many different definitions of a leader all of them basically defined a leader in the same way, someone who leads people. So, a leader does not typically have to be a manager it could be a teacher or a parent. That is when I realize that a great leader has always been right in front of me teaching me great values, and that is my mother.
