Depicting the Various Traits and Characteristics of Leadership in Literature When discussing any triumphant or flourishing organization or institution, the main attribute which will always surface when examining the true fabric of what allows a particular organization or institution to excel, will always be leadership. Leadership is portrayed at its pinnacle in William Bratton’s Turnaround, Rudolph Giuliani’s book Leadership, Oren Harari’s book The Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell, and David Lipsky’s book Absolutely American: Four Years at West Point. In each of these works, the author does an exceptional job of depicting the various traits and characteristics necessary for being a powerful and effective leader. William Bratton, born and raised in Boston, was appointed as New York City’s new police commissioner by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani on December 2, 1993. William Bratton was a leader who spent his whole life turning around low-performing, dysfun-ctional police departments. It was his specialty and it soon became his trademark. Bill Bratton hit the ground running as the commissioner of police by implementing several policies and visions that he had, that many believed would be unfathomable in policing. His goals were revolutionary and unprecedented and would not be possible to achieve if not for his incredible leadership ability. His ability as an effective leader allowed him to select intelligent, experienced, and quality individuals who shared identical beliefs and visions as he did. Any leader would agree that anything is possible through optimism, intelligent planning, and preparation, but nothing is possible if your chosen “executives” lack the leader’s confidence to operate freely and carry out the organization’s ultimate goals. Bratton was a believer in Theodore Roosevelt’s ideology that “the best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self- restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” Bratton was a master motivator. His optimism rubbed off on everyone around him and this reflected their performance. He had a belief that “leadership is the ability to enthuse and encourage the people in your organization so highly that, whatever idea is put into action, they embrace it so fully they forget the genesis and assume it was their own” (Bratton pg.155). A leader is a make up of many different attributes and qualities. An effective Leader encompasses all of the attributes which go along with facilitating ideas and allowing an organization to grow and flourish, as well as inspiring and motivating those he or she oversees to do the same. A Leader has the ability and almost the reflex action to surface when it is time for a difficult task to be accomplished or a difficult decision to be made. Officers were rewarded and reprimanded appropriately for the amount of arrests that were made. When Officers successfully prevented or deterred crime it didn’t show on paper. This tied in with officer morale in a big way. The book illustrates that when departments put out arrest quotas for the east side arrests fell, usually to the minimum. Mosko is often very critical of upper police managements distance and ignorance to the actual problems out there.
While the life and work of a police officer, commonly referred to as a cop, may be portrayed as exhilarating and adrenaline-charged though the television set, it does not tend to unfold the same way in real life. However, the general responsibilities of detection and prevention of crime, coupled with the maintenance of public peace does remain constant in both real and fictitious cop life. In order to truly understand the life of a cop, one must go to the source. In William Bratton’s and Peter Knobler’s Turnaround, they provide that source through the firsthand account of Bratton’s life and work as a cop, with all of his ups and downs.
Making a stands that being a homosexual is natural and homosexuality isn’t a mental disorder. Conversion or reparative therapy only suppress their sexual conduct, not their sexual desires. Those type of therapy infuses shame and guilt in a person which can cause the person the shutdown. Secondly, conversion therapy can make a person feel like they have no way out. The highly disapproved therapy can push a person to make a bad rational decision possibly committing suicide. LGBT people are three to seven times more likely to commit suicide. Thirdly, they promote sexual orientation is a choice but your sexual orientation is not a choice. Conversion therapy is a treatment directed to change a persons sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual. The American Psychiatric Association(APA) disapproves of the treatment given that people believe and see it as a mental disorder. They feel that trying to change a persons homosexual orientation is considered to be unethical. Debates are held on how it is highly likely for a homosexual to cause self harm giving that they are made to see themselves as being wrong. The APA feels as if the solution for this should be instead of a change in someones orientation, there should be a change in the way society views it.
Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership is leading a group of people or company to reach a result or further and the organization. A leader is supposed to be an example of how all employees are expected to act and what they should be striving for. Good leaders also don’t use their position within a company to take advantage of the company and its employees. A good leader is supposed to be able to perform their job with high standards, efficiency, and honor. However, for every good leader, there are bad leaders and the worse the leader the more detrimental he or she becomes to employees and the company they run. Leadership was written by former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. In his book he discusses basic leadership principles and how they were applicable as Mayor of New York City during one of the darkest times in U.S. history, 9/11. During his two-terms as Mayor his leadership skills were put to the test trying to manage a large city with high crime rates and ultimately challenged by the terrorist attacks in 2001. Through adversity and chaos, he was able to demonstrate what it meant to truly be a leader and ultimately wrote a book to teach others that leadership “does not simply happen, it can be taught learned and developed” (p.xii).

Conversion therapy is a form of child abuse and hate crime that aims to change the very foundation of a gay person by ripping apart his psyche and reforming it. That may seem bombastic, hyperbolic, and extreme, but teens in conversion therapy are eight times more likely to attempt suicide. Some even go as far as to call it "psychological abuse," according to the National Center for Lesbian Rights. This practice, looked down upon by every credible psychological and health organization, needs to end to save the lives of thousands of LGBT people.
Although the tolerance of homosexuality fluctuates throughout time, it has been generally considered a sin and “abomination” for the past two millennia. “Treatment” of homosexuality prior to the 20th century typically consisted of physical violence to the point of death. However, the people of 1950s America were often reluctant to kill a loved one or family member if they displayed “homosexual urges.” As a result, mental health was looked to as a solution. Although our modern society in America is now less tolerant of these ‘therapists’ and supporters of this ‘therapy,’ it is needless to say that it is impossible to eradicate a practice that can be justified as freedom of religion. For this reason, I have engendered a complete solution to not only stopping conversion therapy, but also reversing the illusion that conversion therapy is either just or in some god’s wish. The ultimate solution to this issue is taking a taste of one’s own medicine. Through similar techniques used by themselves, therapists and supporters will undergo therapy for hetero to homosexual conversion, thereby solving the problem altogether.

Some might say that having a strong personality and a commanding presence is needed in order to be a strong leader.
