The International Bar Association (IBA): A Story of Leadership and Success Fernando Peláez-Pier Hoet Peláez Castillo Duque Caracas, Venezuela The IBA was founded on February 17, 1947 by a group of 34 national bar associations that were encouraged by the mission of the United Nations (UN), which aimed to establish cohesive systems of law and justice on a global scale. Today, 68 years later, the IBA is the leading association of lawyers known as “the global voice of the legal profession.” In this article, we will go over the history of the IBA and why it has gained its leading position among bar associations, law societies, and practicing lawyers from around the world. For the success of any organization, it is essential that it must have …show more content…
Within the IBA, we find “leaders who demonstrate persistence, tenacity, determination, and synergistic communication skills bringing out the same qualities in their groups. Good leaders use their own inner mentors to energize their team and organizations and lead a team to achieve success.” (ii) IBA’s leaders are individual practicing lawyers, holding positions at all different levels of the association, from sub-committees’ officers up to the president. The need for leaders at all levels is a requirement for an association to build and maintain its leadership, and there is no doubt that this has been the stone to build the success of the IBA. Ogbonnia (2007) defines an effective leader "as an individual with the capacity to consistently succeed in a given condition and be viewed as meeting the expectations of an organization or society. Leaders are recognized by their capacity for caring for others, clear communication, and a commitment to persist.” (iii) Among other characteristics, a leader must also be intelligent, assertive, energetic and flexible, with initiative, good judgment and strong
“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” (Welch). Leadership is inspiring others to learn more, do more, and become more. Ineffective fail to possess certain characteristics which effective leaders do. Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.

Attorneys are always trying to seek upon new innovations that will give the career more opportunities to be successful. People believe the law field is a slow-moving career that does not keep up with new advances. In fact, the law is a field where attorneys have to keep up with new innovations or they will fall behind.Just like any career field, innovation is a must for companies to advance in the future. Attorneys have been around since the ancient times. America copied the legal profession concept from Greece and Rome. Although these concepts were good America made some changes. Lawyers only worked for the government, but America changed it for the people to have some type of representation in court. In the past hundred years law has advanced in many different areas.Law has innovated in areas such as,technology, new practices of law,and collaboration.
This book focuses on the premise that in order to become a leader one must start by acting like a leader. An individual must take on the habits of a leader and then start to act like a leader and others will treat them as a leader. This statement contradicts a lot of leadership courses which teach that one must look inside oneself and find the characteristics that they possess to be a leader. Traditionally one must think about their actions, choose their actions and then act to be a leader. This book says that knowingly changing what your actions are and then act. By doing this simple act of changing your habits first and then acting like a leader over time these habits will become second nature. What Ibarra also brings up is that in a constantly changing business environment that in order to be a good manager changes to character are going to need to occur frequently over time. She goes on to say that this may be from situation to situation, you need to be chameleon.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Our text explains that “Court administration as we know it today grew out of our organization developments of the 1940’s” (Cronkhite, 2013, p. 124). Congress passed an Administrative Office of the Courts Act in 1939, which had a lot to do with the development of the court’s administration. As the society is constantly changing and developing, international law is also in constant development, and with time, it came to reflect the legal relations between non-states such as companies and individuals, as well as relations between states, it is being shaped into a new system which is more involved in the structure of the society itself and not only based on state sovereignty.
International law has generally been accepted and respected by the States to be the fundamental element in ensuring peace and diplomacy when dealing with matters concerning international relations. It should be noted that, within international law, there are various subjects who are considered to have international legal personality, to wit: States, international organizations, dependent territories, belligerent groups, multinational enterprises, non-governmental organizations, and individuals (Walter, 2007). However, the rights and obligations of these referenced subjects were considered and developed as international law itself evolved. More specifically, the international rights, duties, and obligations of individuals as subjects of international law were not effectively established until after the 20th century.
Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
According Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, (2009), “an effective leader was defined as someone with the ability to influence and motivate others not only to perform work tasks but also to support the organization’s values and meet the organization’s goals” (p.70).
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). Good leaders must utilize all of these traits in order to meet the challenges of the future. A few emerging challenges that future

It sets out the crimes falling within the jurisdiction of the ICC, the rules of procedure and the mechanisms for states to cooperate with the ICC (Hebel, n.d.). The main court of the ICC is in the Netherlands, but proceedings from the ICC may occur elsewhere in the world. The ICC is funded by 122 countries, and so...
What does it take to be an effective leader? This is something that has been asked many times over the course of human history. Some might say that having a strong personality and a commanding presence is needed in order to be a strong leader. Good quality leadership is something that is hard to possess and is not something everyone can do. Each of these theories of leadership has their own benefits and can be useful
