Importance of Accountability Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines accountability as: “the quality or state of being accountable; especially: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one 's actions. Accountability is one the most important aspects in the military and civilian life style. Holding Marines accountable for their actions and having every Marine and piece of gear assigned to you accounted for is required at all times. It ensures the safety and stability of all the Marines. Supervisors, running a company, need to have 100% accountability of their employees. You must be able to reach them in a timely manner, in case the plan of the day has changed. The Marine Corps cannot function without its most important tool, the MARINES. One of the smallest and most important aspects of being Marines, being where you are supposed to be and doing what you are supposed to be doing. If your leadership is unaware that you are doing these things then they are to assume you are not completing the task assigned or never made it to the required event. As Marines we are designed to be a force in readiness, able to deploy and execute missions within a limited time frame. Getting an entire unit up and ready to deploy requires a lot of moving parts which make communication and accountability on all levels important. Formations and gear inspections have become so ingrained in the USMC culture because you need to have the proper personal and equipment to complete the mission. According to Nofi, “The United States Marine Corps is America's best-known military unit and perhaps the most famous in the world” . The traditions of the Marine Corps date way back since 1775 and the current regulations have been derived from the way marines in the past carried out their day to day activities. Some customs have been incorporated into the current orders and regulations to be able to standardize conduct of the marines. It is important for a marine to know and keep in mind traditional customs because one should never forget their heritage, therefore, practiced tradition in the Marine Corps should take precedence over Marine Corps orders and regulations .
...e reasoning behind how we lead should not change no matter what environment we are in. Troops listen and absorb our demeanor no matter what disposition we display. When Leaders fail to take initiative as problems present themselves in the rear, junior marines observe this complacent attitude and accept indecisive attitudes that decrease the unit’s ability to problem solve and act as issues arise. Breaking down our role as Marines we are expected and known by the outside world as hard charging, fearless men who ruthlessly wage and win wars by crushing our opponents with relentless force. However, with the ever evolving Marine Corps and the vast differences in MOS and job training we have to hold these Marines accountable, and in order to do so we must continue our long tradition of confident men, who trust their own skills and who make decisions without hesitation.
The USMC’s Core Values, or ethics, are taken very seriously and have been that way since their beginning. These values include honor, courage, and commitment. Honor, which helps guide Marines, states that a Marine should obey the rules and follow them with respect. These rules include not lying or stealing, abide rules given with a level of respect, and respecting those the same way a Marine wishes to be respected. Courage, which helps strengthen a Marine physically, mentally, and morally, helps to guide a Marine though challenges and overcoming their deepest darkest fears. It is the backbone of the USMC and enables a Marine to do what they know is right and being able to make decisions that not everyone can make under stress. Commitment, which is the spirit and determination that the USMC is known for, is the ultimate discipline of individuals in the Corps. It is what drives and inspires a Marine to be faithful to his beloved Corps and country. (Corps, 2014)
The United States Marine Corps has values drilled into our head at day one at recruit training. A marine lives by the Values of Honor, Courage, and commitment. Honor covers a lot of traits such as ethics, moral, integrity, respect, and maturity to name a few. Courage covers our mental, moral, and physical toughness. It focuses on doing what is right. It requires high personal standard and to lead by example with making decisions. This relates to the inner strength that tells us we can go further. Finally, commitment instills professionalism, discipline, pride, and concern for others. We must carry these values at all times 24/7.
The Military defends its country and citizens by any means necessary. The power structure of the military is the most well known aspect to civilians, but there is much more to the armed forces than that. Each tear of the power structure has a responsibility to watch over the lower tears, making sure they are doing their job correctly and build their individual records. Each service member relies on his/her record to dictate how they are treated and advance in the military. In addition to the rank system and individual record, there is a code of conduct in the Military, that is specific to each branch, which must be followed or severe disciplinary action will be taken. Accountability is a subject that ranges through every spectrum of life. From simply knowing your food supply by opening the refrigerator, to knowing the exact amount of ammunition a military convoy has at its disposal, down to each individual round. When we know what the situation is, and hold each person responsible for they're actions in the situation, that is the concept of accountability at its root. If we are not to hold each other responsible for each of our own actions and choices then we will never be able to correct problems and concerns, which will make us fail as a whole because the smallest individual action can account for the gravest of concequences. In this essay I'm going to show how important accountability is in the everyday life of a United States Marine. I will do this by presenting the textbook definition of accountability then dissecting it and defining it in my own words. I will then show you how the military practices accountability with everything it does; by applying a system that is similiar to that of checks and balances. I will tie into this the Incident that occurd in 29 Palms, CA on August 31, 1988, where the failure to have accountability of all the marines on Base ultimately resulted in the negligent death of one Marine, and the ruined careers of those who were in charge of him. Lastly I will go down to the basic level of the Marine Corps: the life of the individual Marine and how he can, and naturally does to a point, apply accountability to his every action, be it on or off duty.
The importance of being on time in the military (or anywhere at all), is simply a symptom of discipline, which was instilled in new enlisted soldiers during basic training. Being on time shows reliability. We have to show discipline, responsibility, show care through following military rules and regulations. Being on time not only pertains to accountability, but shows respect to our fellow soldiers, our unit, command and organization as a whole. Being on time also will avoid any disciplinary actions that may hinder you from reaching your goals. Being on time may have a greater importance and effect, than we may know. Being on time enables us to be able to trust and rely on each other in life and death situations. Last but not least, it shows that we will be able and ready to capitalize on our capabilities to complete our missions. It is not acceptable to be late (except when involving safety limitations), because missions and operations are interlocking pieces that must function together as a whole in order for it to work in a timely manner. All successful and respective people all have one common attribute, and this is knowing and exhibiting the importance of being on time.
In the Marine Corps, there are many ways to achieve mission accomplishment. Two ways that stand the most for me are time management and accountability. I believe that in any type of career out there, time management and accountability are major keys but lately I have been failing to do that. These traits are something I have to try my best to work on so I am able to be successful in my career as a Marine.
The US Marines are known to be the most dedicated and committed branch of military in the United states, making them highly popular and loved. Their pride and commitment to one, small, and united family make them stand out from the rest and their dedication is seen as they wake up at the crack of dawn to train with people they consider as close as family, and this gives the marines themselves a greater sense of self. It is imperative for supervisors to focus on what is required in order for his/her employees to accomplish their job. They must be supportive of their employees and provide continual feedback on their job performance .Supervisor need to include their employees when making changes that effect they way they perform their jobs or finding new way to do things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees more responsibly to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a major need for promotion, pay increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.
Accountability defined as the responsibility of an individual in a position of an employee or student. In this section, I am going further to mention some situations and how does this situation demonstrate the responsibility that reflected from the dimensions of my personality, including conditions from communication, diversity awareness, decision-making and problem solving. First am going to point at some of my situation that I experienced as a student and then build it up to the situation that I faced in the work placement program as an employee.
This has to be done at least 15 to 30 minutes before forming so that the team leader can report it to the Platoon Sergeant in due time and the soldier is not marked down as “FTR”. When a soldier is FTR, he is usually held accounted for with a verbal counseling or a written counseling. The purpose of this accountability formation is mission readiness; to know with how many bodies leaders are counting with for future missions and for leaders to put out important information. Communication is very, very, very important in order to have proper accountability of personnel, and equipment. For example soldiers need to communicate with leaders for effective planning of missions. Without proper communication commanders won’t know how many soldiers are available for a mission, if every soldier has a serviceable weapon, how much ammunition is available, and if every soldier has the proper gear for the mission. “There is no success without sacrifice.” Sacrifices of, time and money seeking knowledge, time and perspiration seeking high levels of physical performance. These efforts to succeed cost, money, time away from loved-ones, and many other possible losses. “Leaders are often asked to give up more than others.” This principle is driven home in the Marine Corps; a leader at any level in the Marines is expected to take care of those he or she leads before themselves. This is demonstrated most visually when Marines eat; when a platoon forms for chow it is by rank. The lowest will always receive food before the senior ranking of the group. It is through this that Marines, are continually reminded, to take care of those in their charge before themselves. Success
When supervising investigators the amount of accountability needed for the investigator has to be a balanced accountability. The supervisor must know their investigators and how they react to certain rules and regulations when it comes to their investigations and their job. If a supervisor is expecting one of their investigators to always be able to inform them of where they are, and what they are doing. They will likely cause them to feel constrained and they may end up with problems. If the supervisor gives their investigators too much freedom then they might have investigations not get finished, they may have trouble accounting for the time on the job, and thus trouble getting more funding for new advances in investigative technologies. There are a couple of different ways to have the investigator account for his or her time. One of those ways is by filling out their time sheet daily, but this could cause them to feel like they are not trusted and being watched constantly (McDevitt 2005: 65).
