It has always been my dream to become an officer in the military ever since I was young. My uncle was in the military and loved it, he always told me stories about it and how much he enjoyed it. Growing up hearing his stories and seeing his uniform made me want to do it one day. Well, for me that one day is here now and I am proud to put on that uniform and call myself a soldier. I have always been a leader in my family, my community, and in my life in general. I like to not just be in charge but, I like to inspire those around me. I enjoy setting the example for those around me to follow. I want to be and officer so that I can be the example for the new soldiers who come in full of ambition and dreams. I want to be the leader they can trust and follow into any situation no matter what it is. However, I also want to be someone they can rely on and talk to whenever something is going on in their lives. I want to be an officer so I can help those around me and change the Army for the better. First, there is respect, just because you have the rank and status of an officer doesn’t mean those below you in your command are going to respect you. A lot of people are going into the army as officers thinking everyone owes them something and that they have to do what they say. All I can say to that is, you’re in for a rude awakening. As officers we should respect those below us and talk to them as a leader should not a boss especially our NCOS and PSG. Although I grew up in a military family, I never saw myself going into a military career. Up until I was about fourteen years old, I planned on being a marine biologist in Hawaii. Sounds nice, right? Well, at the end of my eighth grade year I decided that I might as well join NJROTC, because all of my friends were doing it and it seemed okay. I have to say, looking back, I was quite naive. Joining NJROTC was the smartest and most valuable decision I have made to this day.
Why do I want to be an area officer? While these words are not exactly the same as previous essay prompts I have been given, they all share the same idea; “Why do I want to be a leader”? Looking back at my old responses they are all focused on similar concepts; I wanted to be a leader because of the friendships, traveling and meeting new people, building better leadership skills, learning how to better communicate with people, and acquiring life skills, such as patience, teamwork, organization, and dedication. While all of these things have some importance, they should never be the reason someone wants to be a leader. When I wrote these I thinking about how to better myself, rather than how to help others. I was thinking selfishly. At the time I didn’t know what it truly meant to be a leader, to be willing to sacrifice myself for others. Even while I am still young and have much to learn, I finally understand why I want to be a leader and what a true leader should look like. I would like the opportunity to serve as a 2014-2015 Area Officer, so that I can better serve the FFA, my fellow members, and ultimately my world.
For years I have aspired to become a part of an elite organization such as the military, and more importantly, the United States Navy. Its reputation for instilling high moral character was encouragement for me to develop into a more mature, responsible, and independent young citizen. There are certain qualities that an officer must possess such as: honor, courage, commitment, and attention to duty, responsiveness to orders, cooperation, loyalty, leadership, integrity, and discipline. Throughout my high school career, I showcased these qualities while an active member of The American Legion of Ohio Buckeye Boy’s State, The National Honor Society, as a leader in the Ohio State Highway Patrol Junior Cadets, Clay and Waite High School Marching Band Alumni, Quiz Bowl, and Top Ten Scholars. My journey into the Air Force was one that started off as a business transaction which transformed into one of duty, honor, and service. I have had the distinctive honor of leading joint forces to search for downed aircrew and leading multinational forces to increase combat capability on the Republic of Korea. I know that I am a part of the Air Force lethal force and am prepared to answer my nations calling in any way required.
My leadership can expect a top tier performer who strives to be one of the most competent Non-commissioned Officer’s within the unit. I will do this by adhering to the regulations, unit sop’s and any other guidance which governs my section. I will ensure my soldiers do the same, holding them to strict but attainable standards and expecting nothing less. I will teach, coach, counsel, and mentor these soldiers-teaching them what a leader is and grooming them to be leaders also.
The point I’m trying to get out of this is disrespect in the military is a big thing, especially dealing or being disrespectful to a Non Commissioned Officer. Disrespect doesn’t only have to be with Non Commissioned Officers, it can be with Commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers, and Senior Non Commissioned Officers such as (Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeants, Sergeant Majors, and sometimes seasoned Staff Sergeants). The same idea of an unwavering hierarchy that extends beyond title and into the deep roots of merit are inherent in both concepts. Even dealing with other branches of service, there are certain expectations to be upheld when dealing with an officer, a senior enlisted, and even with your peers. Officers are saluted by enlisted members, just as junior enlisted members stand at parade rest when addressing Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO). This level of respect would continue on into a civilian environment, although no saluting would be present in civilian attire. For example, a lower enlisted member could be at a restaurant or a bar over the weekend and happen to see his Company Commander. Even out of the work environment and military setting, the should still subtly take each other’s rank into account with everything said, such as a “Sir” every now and then from the enlisted member as well as avoiding certain comments that could get a soldier in trouble when dealing with his Chain of Command. This same level of military bearing will also carry on into encounters with civilians as military members and prior service member can almost always be spotted in a crowd with relative ease. Police officers have a stressful job that requires quick decisions making with good judgment. Duties of a police officer involve writing reports and maintaining order in criminal situations, it’s all judged with critical thinking. Due to all the different duties that are required from a police officer they are required to have certain traits such as a good physical agility, ability to cope with difficult situations, well writing skills, as communication skills, and have the ability to have exert and respect commands of authority. Each department will recruit officers in a different way, but they will have some standards for recruitment techniques. Furthermore, service academies provide once in a life time opportunities to attain top of the line education while guaranteeing you with a job as an officer upon graduation. Respect is probably the most important trait that needs to be shown towards your superiors. Every Armed forces branch in the United States of America has a chain of command in which respect is the main premise behind the entire organization. Respect backs the ideals and leadership within any chain of command. Respect is important in the design of the military system itself. You have to automatically trust and do what higher ranking cadet, or any cadre member says because they hold power and most likely have more experience then you. You must show them respect to because they have more knowledge and know how, not to mention they have earned the stop they are in. Respect also tires into the worrier’s ethos, which is an important aspect of what it means to be a member of the army.
I have asked myself, “Why do I want to be a military officer?” I want to be a military officer so I can be a role model to all Soldiers and civilians. To be an expert in a field of study, so that Soldiers approach me for advice and be a leader to look up to. An officer that knows right from wrong, willing to put the needs of their Soldiers before my own. Lead, mentor, and form young Soldiers to know what it is to be an American Soldier. I joined the U.S. Army as a private, during basic training and my first duty station would influence my thoughts and shape my mind of the knowledge a Noncommissioned Officer should possess. As a Noncommissioned Officer you will place the needs of your soldiers above your own, just as it is stated in the Noncommissioned Officer’s Creed. Some junior leaders are incompetent by not knowing how to take care of their soldiers and do not live by the very creed that should help define and shape us as competent and trustworthy Noncommissioned Officers. Regardless of the rank, from command sergeant major to a corporal, they should all strive to know their soldiers, place their soldier needs before their own, and lead from the front.
Introduction: I have had the dream of owning my own business for quite a long time now. Since I was 16 years old I have wanted to create a company that is all my own so I can run it the way I would like to and have a brand that people enjoy using. All throughout high school I have tried to pick courses that will only benefit me and create my own business. My senior year in high school approached me with a lot of tough questions to answer like “where do I want to go to school, what should I major in, and should I take a year off from school”.
