As I started to read the results of my strengths finder, I was not surprised. My top five strengths were positivity, achiever, arranger, belief and responsibility. I definitely expected responsibility, achiever, positivity, and arranger. Growing up, those qualities and strengths have always represented me as a child and they continue to represent me today. I have always had a sense positivity, no matter where I go and how sad I may feel. I am also excited to see that positivity is my number one strength, because I live my life in a positive way, no matter what the situation may be. Many students would have given up already if they were in my shoe. Working two jobs, volunteering and attending college as a full-time student is very difficult and one has to be able to stay focus, in order to achieve what they want in life. As an achiever, “one has to have a great deal of stamina and work hard. They take great satisfaction from being busy and productive” (Gallup, Inc. 2000). To explain, my family, friends and teachers have always seen me as an achiever. They would always tell me that I will become successful in life, no matter what the consequences may be. I was not surprised to find out that achiever is one of my strengths. As a leader, one has to be able to strive for excellence and achieve his or her main goals. As a leader one has to also, be able to explain the process of be an achiever to his or her constituents, by encouraging and advising them. As the treasurer of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Alumni Association, I would attend seminars at the different community colleges in Palm Beach County and encourage students to join PTK and to register for Florida Atlantic University (FAU). By doing this, not only do I explain the requirements to them, but I also advise them how to get started. Being responsible means taking “psychological ownership of what they say they will do. They are committed to stable values such as honesty and loyalty” (Gallup, Inc. 2000). Being a leader means being responsible, taking on hard challenges, taking responsibility for one’s mistake and correcting team members. According to Komives, Lucas and McMahon, “responsibility means accepting accountability for your own actions and being conscious of the moral and ethical implications of deciding not to act. Being responsible means being accountable, pursing excellence, and exercising self-restraint” (Komives, Lucas and McMahon 2013, 181). In fact, as a leader, one has to be able to demonstrate commitment to their organization/s, staff, profession and to their industry. As a result, others will be inspired to stay enthusiastic about their roles and contributions. As a leader, I try to be responsible by showing up to meetings on time, meeting deadlines, earning trust from other leaders as well as constituents, invite open criticism, and remembering that it is not about you only. Again, leadership is not a role, it is a responsibility and one has to be able to accept that as becoming a leader.
