When deciding what to do or be in life, a person will think of many things: what college will I attend, what job will I have, how much money will I make? An important question to succeeding in life is usually left out of these thoughts. That question is “how will I get there?” To truly be a distinguished young woman, I not only need goals but also an idea of how I will achieve them. Throughout my time in the Distinguished Young Women program, I have realized the importance of five major qualities I will need to reach my goals: being healthy, involved, studious, ambitious, and responsible. I firmly believe if a person utilizes these characteristics, she will be successful; and with success she will become the person she is meant to be: her best self.
Being healthy is one of the most important Be Your Best Self aspects because it encompasses so much of our day-to-day lives. To be described as healthy, I not only have to be physically fit, but also mentally, socially, and financially fit. Being healthy has many benefits. Exercise allows a person to be a happier, calm, energized, and confident individual. The same can be said for exercising the brain, socializing, and keeping finances in order. By being healthy I will feel better every day and find fierce determination and discipline in the process.
Being involved in school and community activities should not be a way to impress colleges or keep oneself busy to simply avoid boredom. Having a pure, unselfish need to help others in any way possible is the real reason anyone should be involved. Many times in life, people take what they have for granted. Cecilia Ahern said, “Time cannot be packaged and ribboned and left under trees for Christmas morning. Time can’t be given. But it can...

Being responsible is completing the tasks one has agreed to do, no matter how difficult or simple they may seem.
To be a distinguished young woman, one has to be exceptional. Though people like to search for distinction their whole lives, most are afraid of it. They are afraid of the work they will have to do, the challenges they will have to overcome, and the responsibility that will be put upon them. Everyone is special from the moment she is born; however, true leaders are able to take the unique gifts they were given and become extraordinary human beings. For the rest of my life, I will chase the elusive notion that we all hold dear to our hearts: becoming my best self.
Responsibility may be defined as "a form of trustworthiness; the trait of being answerable to someone for something or being responsible for one's conduct." (www.thefreedictionary.com) Responsibility is shown all through Fred Gipsons novel Old Yeller about a family living in the dangerous wilderness in 1860. The young hard working Travis, his loving mother and the loyal dog Old Yeller all show responsibility.
“If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded.” (Maya Angelou) To me success is not measured solely by your financial wealth and career achievements, but by genuinely helping others reach their fullest potential in life. Uplifting young women and encouraging them to follow their dreams is something I strive for day to day. A woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated displays leadership, commitment, high scholastic and ethical standards, which are all qualities that I possess.
Responsibility is a lot of different things and has many different parts. One part of responsibility is social responsibility. Social responsibility is being responsible for people, for the actions of people, and for actions that affect people. Social responsibility is about holding a group, organization, or company accountable for its effect on the people around it. When you do the wrong thing, many people pay for it, especially everyone that you know.
Barbara White, author of Women’s Career Development, gives an opportunity for successful women to give advice to other women wanting to pursue a career in the workforce. First, they explained that women need to be single-minded today. They must make their own choices and know what they want. If a woman hopes to achieve her goal of an ‘American Dream’ and live up to it, then she should be persistent and keep working at achieving her objectives. The best advice given in White’s book is that a woman should not underestimate herself (227-229). A woman today can be whatever she pleases. It takes work, dedication and persistence to achieve goals in general, not just in the career aspect of life. As seen through Joan Crawford and Dawn Steel’s stories, a ‘business woman’ has a bright future now and for years to come. Women’s roles have drastically changed throughout the past century along with the actual number of women now working. It is phenomenal to see such an increase in women’s participation, and hopefully this course will continue even higher into the twenty-first century.

What does it mean to be healthy? Health is a state of complete physical , mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, illness or infirmity. In her commencement address, “What Does a Woman Need to Know?”, Adrienne Rich reminds the graduating class of women of the importance of learning their history [of women] in order for them to realize their identity. She refers to education as a privilege because there is a myriad of other women who were not offered the opportunity to rise in society. While Rich congratulates the new wave of women going on to become doctors and lawyers, she warns them of the dangers of tokenism, or the practice of hiring a few women in order to give the appearance of gender equality in a workforce. Such dangers include falsely assuming that women are not getting upper-level positions because they cannot carry them like a man. Consequently, Rich urges these

What makes a person healthy? Surely, it is more than exercising and a proper diet. As a ten year-old girl, being healthy had one meaning to me; to eat all my vegetables and to be physically fit. I have chosen healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness.
healthy is a major component in ones’ overall wellbeing, more so mentally, but being healthy
What does it mean to have responsibility? The word responsibility has many different meanings to it, but the one that I will be focusing on defines responsibility as having the duty to deal with something or someone. Having responsibilities is important because it shows others that you are able to follow the rules and be independent. One example of being responsible is taking care of your siblings, or babysitting other kids.
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
Healthy living is a change not everyone is willing to do. Even with small replacements in your daily life, you can start to see big changes in how your body starts working. Maintaining a healthy life style can benefit your life in many ways. Being healthy can improve your bodies ability to stand against infections or diseases. It can also aid in giving you more energy, as well as helping you sleep better. Another advantage to keeping a healthy life style is you'll be stronger, and feel better about the way your body feels. Despite the overly expensive food or the pricey monthly bills from the gym you hardly go too, simple steps can assist you in living a long healthy life without the extra effort.
Contrary to this opposing view, helping others is the best feeling that one could ever have. What is a volunteer? Volunteer: a person who does work without getting paid to do it (Merriam, Webster). The act of volunteering gives people a sense of responsibility and makes one feel needed and useful to society one way or another. Students should be obligated to give back to their communities through acts of community service. It should be viewed from the perspective of paying their dues back to the community, after all the education of these students is free and it is the community that pays for it. Community service should be a mandatory high school graduation requirement because it builds ones character, limits the rate of teenage delinquency, and establishes a path for a better future as an individual.
