Much of organisational success is attributed to the quality of its workforce, with many organisations recognising its human resources as their most important asset (Mohammed, Bhatti, Jariko, & Zehri, 2013). A healthy and productive labour force is an important element of reaching organisational success which is why energies have been directed to looking into ways to improve organisations. ). Since the inception of positive psychology, positive leadership has received increasing attention (Searle & Barbuto, 2013) providing significant influence in the corporate world. This essay will focus on the benefits of the positive leadership in a workplace setting. This essay demonstrates the benefits of positive leadership in a workplace setting through prior research and literature. This essay finds that positive leadership improves organisational performance indirectly through a number of factors. These factors include improvement of employee positive moods, employee empowerment, employee psychological capital, employee job satisfaction and employee flow.

Understanding the benefits of positive leadership can potentially assist organisations in determining where energies should be directed to in terms of improving its organisations. Generally, organisational managers’ behaviour is seen to have more impact on employee psychological well-being than other aspects such as stress, life, and work functions (Kelloway et al., 2013). This can also potentially save companies millions.
It is a pity that modern leadership is still seen as a great issue that affects organisational performance. It is therefore important that the effects of leadership or the benefits of positive psychology are further explored to foster improvement of employee behaviours and outcomes for organisations.

Contemporary organizations expect advantageous styles of leadership to lead and facilitate operations as we move forward into the 21st century. This need requires leaders and organizations to instill a style of leadership advantageous to supporting and leading a culture towards organizational effectiveness and connecting to support and uphold organizational strategies. Thus, the success of an organization usually contains successful leaders who understand and support the needs of the employees. The characteristics of successful leaders include selflessness, mentoring, empowerment, influence, support and empathy among other positive traits (Hoffman, Bynum, Piccolo & Sutton, 2011; Karakitapoglu-Aygun & Gumusluoglu, 2013; Sabir, Sohail & Khan, 2011; Shankers & Sayeed, 2012).
Using the concepts of flow from Csikszentmihalyi, these authors hypothesized that by experiencing flow at work would create a positive leadership role, which would eventually lead to a great satisfaction in their job (Smith, Koppes, and Vodanovich). When a person is satisfied with their job, they are more likely to be organized and perform to their greatest capability. Some researchers have attempted to use flow to measure the relationship between the usage of flow and the attitudes of the employees while doing their job. The more an employee uses flow in their day-to-day work life, the happier the employee will be in the well-being of life (Fullagar and Kelloway). Using psychological flow in everyday work life has been proven to be extremely beneficial in creating a happy employee that is satisfied with the work that he or she is doing. Researcher Bakker has said that while experiencing flow, a person should feel an intense feeling of accomplishment and fulfilment, just while performing the task that they are expected to do everyday in their jobs (Bakker). Contrary to Csikszentmihalyi’s definition of flow, researcher Bakker (2008) defines “flow as the experience of complete absorption, enjoyment, and intrinsic motivation.” This definition is different from Csikszenmihalyi’s because of Bakker’s lack of focus on one specific task at hand. Csikszenmihalyi’s definition of flow is more precise for completing a task that requires stress as to where Bakker’s is a broad sense of satisfaction when completing any task. Dr. Sutton highlights what it takes to be a good boss. People that work for a good boss are 20 percent less likely to have a heart attack (Sutton, 2010). Dr. Sutton wrote that teams with stronger leaders cost the company less money and achieved their work better (Sutton, 2010). Engagement and performance of employees were based upon their direct boss and not if the company was good or bad (Sutton, 2010). Most bad bosses have employees who have check-out: actively disengaged, and undermine their co-workers accomplishments. Managers have to find the balance between performance and humanity to be successful. Positive Psychology is the strengths and virtues a person or a community poses that lead to its optimal performance and allow it to thrive.This is a beneficial study that has the chance to improve the lives of many as well as preventing some negative situations. This review looks into what Positive Psychology is and how it impacts our lives. The sources I selected look into a broad overview of Positive Psychology, and it looks into deeper more specific aspects of Positive Psychology. This review has to lead me to believe that if we see ourselves and the future in a positive way it will have a positive effect on our lives.
