Student’s affairs is a department or division of services that provides support for students at institutions of higher education. They help enhance student growth and development throughout the country and abroad. There are many branches of student affairs varying from the dean of students to even the community director at your dorm. The job they do can be stressful at time and can go highly unnoticed at times. They are an integral part of the students life to help them deal with their stress or the hard times from their classes or even their personal life and to make their life at institution easier. One of the main branches of students affairs is the community director in the residence hall. The directors duty is look after the residence and overlook the work RA does in the residence hall. I interviewed the community director on my hall who represents students affairs to get an even better view on how students affairs work. The name of my community director is Kristopher Little and as a residence I respect the work he do and the how approachable he is makes him a great member of students affair department. And as a students of a prestigious institution I greatly appreciate the work students affairs do for as in a whole and how they help other students with their troubles is highly respectable. …show more content…
Kris is the community director who keeps in check of the RA’s and other important matters at the residence hall. He oversees every activity and basically takes care of the building and the people in it. As to be a community director, you have to be an RA first so you can get the second hand experience of what a residence life is like. Kris was an RA in Arkansas, his hometown, where the residence life is very different than here. He got a master’s degree in Michigan and found a job at U of A as a community director after a nationwide

My experience working with fellow Somewhere students, organizational skills, and work ethic would benefit students visiting the ICY, and would allow me to grow professionally. My position as a Resident Advisor in Dasher Hall provides me with outstanding training. As we discussed in today’s interview, selection is a very personal issue for most students. As an RA, I am often praised for my ability to work with residents on issues that require sensitivity. I am fortunate to balance my strong people skills with strong organizational skills.
As a leader candidate, I can understand the challenges and multiplicity of complications that administrators must face each day. However, I will not accept any remote possibility that the students must be affected by some flaws of the school organization. We all as leaders, must be strategic with people, time, and money to guide our students towards an academic success.
According to Munsch and Cortez, (2014), the intellectual structure of excellence proves to be the basis of student affairs organization. Perfection in this context is the school’s or person’s habits that integrates students in learning Moreover, excellence will be used to describe activities that have proven through observation to serve as best or better actions. Student’s affairs practitioner need to be abreast intellectually, they are at least required to have a baccalaureate degree. Master’s degree is usually the prerequisite for mental health related fields. Student affairs practioners need to be competent in the following areas: (a) advising and helping. It focuses on advising
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
Colleges and Universities play a major role in developing the behavioral patterns of young adults. In addition to developing young minds, colleges help to cultivate character, responsibility, and social acceptable behavior. Students who attend Carlford have expressed their dissent with the current environment of the university. Because of these underling issues, Carlford’s retention rates amongst minorities have suffered. If Kirsten is unable to handle the situation, there will be a trickledown effect to all areas of the university. Being a new professional in the field of Higher Education can be challenge. There are times where an incident directly affects your position and there are other times where there issues that affect the entire institution. Because the issue directly pertains to Greek Life, the Coordinator of Fraternities and Sororities has the responsibility of identifying the concerns and implementing initiatives that will allow the college to be proactive in future situations of this nature.
As a part of the legislative committee of the Student Government Association, I have the opportunity to review and develop legislative that can improve the university for students and the administration alike. In addition, being a part of the social media team has also allowed me to observe situations and contemplate solutions from the university's perspective. Finally, being a member of the Black Student Association reinforces my belief of the importance of dialogue and striving for more diversity and equality in various institutions. Each of these perspectives emphasizes the importance of both grassroots based and institutionally based changes. I am continuing to expand these perspectives in order to develop my outlook on the problems that need to be
I believe the role of the Resident Assistant is to first be a witness of a hard-working student, a committed friend, and a leader at Holy Cross College. The importance of being a hard-working student as an RA is to set expectations in your floor or dorm high in terms of effort towards a cultivation of the mind because that is the main reason we go to college. However, I feel the most important aspect is to be a committed friend. To be committed is to be an to talk or give advice any time and any day of the school year, but also to be able to discipline them when they have broken the rules because a RA should want their friends to mature into an adult in college so that they learn how to be self-discipline before they are sent out into the "real
The Student Government Association is a very important organization that makes a large impact on Willard High School. I would like to be a part of changing and improving how the school operates and is organized. I believe that being a part of SGA will be very beneficial in many aspects, including helping me learn how to be more confident in any future position and become a better leader. Each year, the members of this group have been in charge of bettering everyone’s experience and I qualify in aiding them in the upcoming year.
The institutional type, mission, and governance can influence the work of a student affairs practitioner in different facets. It is also important to note that all areas are interrelated to each other. To know and understand the type of governance and mission an institution has, first you need to know what the institutional type is. According to Levin "institutional type may constitute one of the most influential variables in how colleges and universities operate, in their purposes, their student bodies, and their outcomes."(p.50) The institutional type can influence the work of a student affairs practitioner because institutions come in a variety of sizes, serve different student populations, and are required to follow public or private regulations. This is only a few of the criteria that make up an institutional type. This can have either a positive or negative effect on the work of the student affairs practitioner because this shape's the work environment that a person will be maneuvering through. For example, "Most liberal art's colleges are small, and this impact professional's life in a number of ways. First, there are limited numbers of staff, student affair administrators have both primary and ancillary job responsibilities (for example, residence hall director and assistant director of student activities). Staff numbers are small, practitioners at these colleges tend to work very collaboratively- they need to rely on one another if large-scale programs are to succeed. As a result, they operate much like a family and know each other personally and professionally."(p.30) This requires a supportive environment. It
According to Kaplin and Lee (2006), collegiate student organizations give students an opportunity to obtain and develop leadership skills and to pursue assorted non-academic interests. It also supplements their formal education with secondary academic programming (Kaplin & Lee, 2006). Because of these reasons, students often are encouraged to join a student organization. In addition to joining such a group and because of the First Amendment, students have a right to organize and join these groups and college administrators are obliged by law to allow them that right. This is mostly true for students who attend public schools. Students at private colleges do not have a constitutional right to organize a student organization (Snider, 2004). However, many private colleges will provide organizational rights to students through regulations of their own and in such a case, the private school’s administration may choose to be guided by First Amendment principles as it relates to these student organizations (Kaplin & Lee, 2006).
As a student, I know that we are the future for society to thrive on. We are told again and again that the knowledge we gain will further ourselves into the world, and for our college, there are rights and responsibilities us students must follow to maintain a working community for other students, teachers, and staff. To ensure a healthy and happy college experience, we must earn the same equal rights as every other student through academic opportunities, learning, and financial aid. Students are supposed to be responsible for choices made in college as it is beneficial for our future; however, most importantly we need to be responsible for maintaining academic honesty, meet staff expectations, and taking control of our future.
As the Student Ambassador for Anaheim High School to Anaheim Union High School District, I represent the voices of my fellow peers. I hold the position of presidency for RSVP (Raising Student Voices and Participation). With RSVP I oversee the work of over thirty-six facilitators. These facilitators assist me in three summits, that allow me to hear the student body's concerns in regards to the campus as a whole. From the summits my cabinet and I work closely with administration to improve the school for the better. Aside from RSVP, I attend monthly ambassador meetings where I give an update on the status of my school. The update is then take to the school board via the District Ambassador. Another responsibly I hold as Student Ambassador is
College are the best years of life. These are the years when you have the best friends and you enjoy a lot. If you ask any college student, they are going to tell you some best incidents about college life. But they are also going to tell you about the regrets of college life. Most people do not take college life too seriously because they are unable to achieve what they actually think of. Following is the list of some most common regrets you can hear from college students (i.e Me!).
