Leadership Lessons Standard 1 of the Florida Principal Leadership Standards (2011) describe the priority of the school leader as, “effective school leaders demonstrate that the student learning is their top priority through leadership actions that build and support a learning organization focus on student success”. Our number one priority and focus is and always should be our students. They are the reason behind our professions. It is the faculty the ones who should be supported by the administrators. The leaders should celebrate their success, encourage them, support their assertive instructional decisions, and motivate them each day to create the right conditions for learning. The principals must plan to project growth the most accurate possible, employing all the help that they could get for this challenging task. Osceola School District administration team is starting to implement a new plan to support the classroom instruction. The district administrators are focusing mainly in the subgroups of special education (ESE) and English language learners (ELL). As a leader candidate, I can understand the challenges and multiplicity of complications that administrators must face each day. However, I will not accept any remote possibility that the students must be affected by some flaws of the school organization. Leading organizations of school administrators offer educators various opportunities to encourage educators to become leaders. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) has mandated that leaders be better prepared for the task of providing quality education to all. NCLB “… is forcing all educational stakeholders to face the weakness of contemporary school leadership and is making it impossible to ignore the need for higher quality principals” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). It is believed that all educators can be and are leaders in their own right. A leader is a visionary and has the ability to inspire others to aspire to greatness. Of the numerous opportunities that are offered, those that are most beneficial include but are not limited to leadership training programs, professional development, and creating shared leadership opportunities for teachers to become leaders. The systems “…that produce our nation’s principals are complex and interrelated – and governed by the states. Each state establishes licensing, certification and re-certification” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). States use the ISLLC standards “…as the framework for preparation programs and in service professional development of school superintendents, principals, and other leaders” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.3).
Leaders in the school have hard decisions to help make on a daily basis. They need to evaluate their decisions to make sure they are ethical and effective. Administrators need to listen to all sides of a situation and evaluate all options before they make a decision. This process is difficult because administrators need to make sure that all parties involved are satisfied with the decision that was formed.
Campus leadership comes in various forms in the educational settings. Each administrator brings special abilities, knowledge and traits into their experiences as an administrator. Campuses across the country vary in student population, economic factors and have various community cultural norms in place. The administrator on an educational campus faces foreseen challenges and also unpredictable obstacles. As a result campus leadership must be confident in decision-making, be effective communicators, willing to accept change in today’s educational climate of high-stakes accountability and build positive relationships with teachers and students.
School administrators are important in setting the path for a successful school (Glickman, et al., 2014). The principals could play a dynamic leadership depending on how they exercise their beliefs of the organizational and social environment (McNair, 2011). The principals are the primary facilitators for developing the foundations in learning that will last, to manage the student’s performance at schools, and seeking the improvement at school that will cause great impacts in school‘s education (Gordon,1989). In the recent years in the U.S., education has change in a more cultural diversity population, it is imperative that school supervisors, are trained to encounter this cultural issues, but also assisting others with the opportunities to develop appropriate abilities to deal with different cultures (Glickman, et al., 2014).
Schools are influenced by varied internal and external factors in a constantly changing environment (Navickaite & Janiunaite, 2012). There is a growing consensus among stakeholders that the current progression of education must change drastically. Educational policy makers and leaders are examining an array of school improvement efforts, including rigorous curriculum; alignment of state and national standards and organizational restructuring. According to Fullan (2001), the more complex society gets, the more sophisticated leadership must become. School leaders wrestle with the intricate challenge to implement reform efforts, increase student achievement, serve the individual needs of all students and meet community demands (Goldring & Schuermann, 2009). Leading a change process is an essential and difficult process of school leadership. Effective school leaders are expected to manage and transcend a rapidly changing environment. Hence, leadership requires abilities such as being team-oriented, strong communicators, team players, problem solvers, change makers and transformation leaders (Balyer, 2012).
The administrator that I spoke to wrote in a fax "the Special Education classes are transitioning into study skills classes so the teacher can provide additional help and support for the student to succeed in the regular class environment. During the four or five periods, when the teachers and instructional aides do not have students assigned to them, they are providing support for their students in the regular education classroom. The level of support is directly related to two factors: 1) What the student needs to be successful. 2) What the teacher needs to help the student succeed. So the support provided by the teacher may be provided daily in the regular education classroom, in the form of helping the student take notes, monitoring behavior, doing a lab activity, etc. The support may also take the form of weekly program checks with the regular education teacher, modifying and/or adopting curriculum, or teachers meeting informally to talk."
Training should be implemented on IEP’s and modifications and accommodations for general education teachers. General education teachers should also be trained on utilizing the special education teachers experience in modifying, accommodating, and differentiated instruction. We are a team and the goal we are working for is for all of our students on our campus to be successful, general education and special education students.
To many, the role of the school principal can easily be defined by two simple words – school leader. But what some fail to realize is how the principal’s leadership role impacts the school and the district as a whole. Leadership styles can vary greatly based upon the individual, a variety of factors, and the situation in which the individual is involved. Based upon these factors, the leader acts in a way that directly relates to the situation while utilizing elements from their leadership style. An effective tool in determining a person’s dominant leadership style is through the Leadership Style Diagnostic (LSD) Scale. This survey can yield surprising results that can help a leader to identify how they lead, as well as the areas in which they can make more informed decisions.

This ethical code helps to assist the profession in protecting those deserving its protection. It also helps to raise the confidence and conscience of administrators on behavioral issues. Fundamental ethical principles are always present to guide administrators in confronting, predicting or defining situations. The administrator serves in a public school. He/she is responsible for providing educational opportunities to all and displaying exemplary professional leadership. The motivational factor for the educational administrators is to do what is best for the student. This is important because students are the future of our country.
