With all the different theorist together I believe my classroom can be a safe and productive learning environment for my students. I believe that with a student center, cooperative learning environment my students will thrive and do well. I also believe that with the rules, rewards, and consequences I have established, my students will know what I expect of them and there will be very few behavioral issues.
The following reflection will discuss my evolving knowledge and understanding about how the curriculum can be modified and adapted to provide effective learning experiences and teaching strategies that are inclusive of all students. I will also reflect on some of the advantages and difficulties that may arise as a result of implementing these teaching and learning strategies.
Classroom environment is important to the students’ learning, if the student doesn’t feel like they are in a place to learn but instead a playground they will not want to learn. I would want to create a comfortable classroom environment that is fun but also serious about learning and educating. I would want to make the students feel comfortable enough to ask questions, answer mine, and even talk to me about things that interest them or bothers them outside of class and school. In the same token, they have expectations of me as a teacher that I must live up to. They must be fair, and fairly equal. For example, since I believe organization is key in the study of mathematics, I expect their notebooks and homework to be highly organized as well. The message would be lost if I did not hold myself to the same level of organization. Therefore, lesson plans must be organized, thought through and pre-planned. The classroom must have an orderly appearance, and have orderly routines. By establishing this type of environment, students feel at ease and can feel successful in their maintenance of it.

The teacher should also manage the classroom appropriately, which will ensure that the environment supports academic learning and is safe. An organized classroom is important to having a well-managed classroom. The student’s safety should always be the primary concern of a teacher. There should be a clear line of sight from the teacher to the students at all times. Students should also be able to see the board, where the classroom goals should be listed. Transitions between subjects should be as quick and efficient as possible with no wasted movement or distractions. Teachers should let students know that they care by communicating effectively. Learning student’s names, and calling them by their first names is a big step. Also spending time with students before school and during lunch breaks is crucial. A community of learners is what I would intend to create. A community of learners is a place where I and my students all will work together to help everyone learn. If bad behavior was apparent I would discipline my students, but not out of ill will, but intent to help them grow as individuals. Students can often tell the difference between the two. The classroom space, much like the world, should never be static. My classroom will stand as a reflection of my students and their achievements in learning. The walls will encompass posters, projects, and skill-sets pertinent to the current area of study. It will essentially be a non-authoritarian environment in which the students can feel welcomed, wanted, and appreciated as an individual. Like a Progressivist classroom, the majority of the time inside my classroom walls, the desks will be positioned into groups which are appropriate for fostering cooperative learning and teamwork skills through the use of group projects, active hands-on experimentation, and deep rooted learning through questions and answers. Alternatively, I believe in the importance of students to not always be reliant on the “group thinking” aspect. They need to be able to be strong self-thinkers and ultimately know how to depend on themselves for answers. This is why my classroom, at times, will be arranged into an Essentialist environment with desks neatly placed into individual rows. I feel that this arrangement allows the individual student to be held accountable for themselves. Creating relationships with students and between students can help to establish a positive environment for both teaching and learning. According to Methods for Effective Teaching, “an optimal teacher-student relationship consists of equal parts dominance and cooperation.” Being assertive and persistent will allow students to understand what is expected from them and how to behave. In addition, showing an interest in what the students have to say and encouraging them fosters a feeling of acceptance. A balance between dominance and cooperation is needed in order to be respected and listened to.
The learning environment is one of the most important attributes of the teaching-learning context, therefore, teachers must put a lot of thought into the planning and designing stages of setting up a classroom. Teachers need to ensure that both the physical and emotional aspects of the learning environment are safe and welcoming. I would ensure that all students have full access to all of the activities and resources in the classroom. For example, I would make sure that any students with visual impairments were seated at an optimal position to see the board. I believe that by creating an accessible environment and ensuring that the students have an active role in the organization of the classroom it will encourage the feeling of independence and belonging. For students to feel emotionally secure teachers will need to ensure that students have the required functional skills and appropriate social development to fully participate in all of the designed learning experiences.
