Creating relationships with students and between students can help to establish a positive environment for both teaching and learning. According to Methods for Effective Teaching, “an optimal teacher-student relationship consists of equal parts dominance and cooperation.” Being assertive and persistent will allow students to understand what is expected from them and how to behave. In addition, showing an interest in what the students have to say and encouraging them fosters a feeling of acceptance. A balance between dominance and cooperation is needed in order to be respected and listened to. Karaba communicates with students one on one is more personal and friendly. She uses affectionate terms like lovely, my love and hunny to show she cares about them. She disclosed it is critical not to give into attention seeking behaviors, to treat the students fairly by giving them appropriate amounts of her time and to be aware when to end conversations or not even begin them. Otherwise, the students will take control of the situation or think they can get out of doing their work. Furthermore, when teaching, she makes connections between the student’s interests and the concepts to show she listens to the students and cares about what they like. Due to these actions, the students listen, obey and want to be in good graces with her. The way relationships are formed between students are modeled from the teacher. With the exception of a few students, they are friendly, respectful and helpful to their peers. I have observed the students taking Mrs. Karaba’s thoughts into consideration many more times than their friends. While focusing on assignments, students will hush one another instead of replying. “Shhh I am working,” or, “Can you please be quiet,” are a few things the students often say to each
