For the past twelve years, my world consisted of Ridgway, the place that taught me countless lessons and made me who I am today. Without this school, these teacher and classmates I wouldn’t have been able to achieve all of my accomplishments. It is because of this I demonstrate great Elker Pride. I have participated in several spirit weeks. I have supported the Elker teams, overdressed in maroon and white, cheering them on, win or lose. However, that is not how I perceive Elker Pride. I believe true Elker Pride is much more than that, it is representing Ridgway proudly through leadership and participation in the community. As seniors we are looked up to by descending grades, with this comes leadership. I am not only Secretary of Student
Council, but Secretary for the Class of 2017, and President of Yearbook Club. In order to encourage younger students to participate, I participate as much as possible. I am a part of four clubs; book club, french club, DECA, and yearbook. To withhold to the high standards of Ridgway’s academics, I am taking part in my second year of National Honor Society, French National Honors, and my seventh year as a High Honor Roll student. I believe that if I demonstrate my Elker Pride proudly through leadership and participation, I can inspire younger students to do the same and I think that's what Elker Pride is all about.
Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. This past week SUU’s native American student association (NASA), hosted their 38th annual powwow. Our club, the SUU Polynesian club was invited to dance for thirty minutes between their activities and we happily accepted. After we danced we were invited to come back so that we could watch and experience the native American culture. I was surprised to see how similar their culture was to ours!
I have been in this school since kindergarden. I have been here long enough to see our school win the state title for football and I”ve also seen our school locked down. There is the good and the ugly in every story, and what side you choose to pick will make your life easier or a very long road to glory.

Herndon high school marching band also known as "Pride of Herndon" was selected as the only band to take part in the 2013 Pearl Harbor memorial parade in Hawaii. After participating in the parade, the band was awarded grand champion title for their performance. The high school band received recognition by congress for their partaking as the only band to represent the state and their grand champion title in.
Leadership is an art that evolves over time. My experience has allowed me to obtain the key principles that make me a leader. Recently, I became President of Denver South High School Key Club. A self-funded group, that provide student with leadership and public service opportunities. It provides student with a lifetime experience and allows their leadership skills to grow. As the President, I coordinate and organize events that allow members to serve there community. With a very strong team, we are able to accomplish our duties as leaders.
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. This semester along with participating in LTC over the summer I’ve learned leadership is more than being in charge. It’s about, “utilizing and developing skills to influence a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. An individual who stands not only for his cause but takes responsibility and motivates others also. There is a clear difference between being a boss and a leader. A leader is a motivator for others and inspires individuals to aim high and attain that aim. However a boss only supervises over his subordinates. Power naturally comes to a leader but that power is not a tool of leader. Rather if one tries to control the circumstances with power it turns out to be authoritarian or even suppressive in its expression.
Two years ago School District 74 organized a series of leadership workshops designed to strengthen the leadership performance of school administration and teaching staff. Participants were encouraged to think of themselves as leaders and to identify situations in which they were or could be leaders. The idea seemed to be not only that our school system will be improved through the development of strong leadership (on its own an important recognition), but also that anyone (and everyone) can be a leader in his or her own position within the system. This is a ridiculous idea. If leadership is approached as the only label that designates personal merit or importance, then the implication is that followers are less capable, less thoughtful and less important than leaders. If everyone is a leader, then the idea of leadership quickly loses its meaning; leadership implies followership, and without followers leaders could never lead effectively. Past emphasis on leadership has largely ignored the reciprocal relationship between leadership and followership. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss followership, and to acknowledge its importance to organizations, especially school systems.
Looking back on my three years at Twin Cities Academy, I find myself wondering how all these years came and went so fast. I still watch myself walking through the same halls and sitting in the same classrooms as I did back in 6th and 7th grade and I’ve seen myself grow so much, mentally, socially and physically. I still remember everything that has happened throughout my years, the best of times, and the worst.
For the past 13 years of our education we have been on a journey - a journey full of experiences, challenges and accomplishments. We have made it through elementary, middle and high school. It hasn't always been what we expected and certainly not easy, but as we progressed down the road, we stretched ourselves to reach across barriers and found ourselves in new and expanding roles. We were given the opportunity to explore our interests and discover what really excites us. We have become more independent and complete individuals. Our growth and self-discovery has placed us here tonight.
In today’s society, the definition of leadership is ever-changing and is always being improved. As a leader, my mission is to treat everyone equally and give them the respect they deserve. This semester was very challenging, but my leadership skills have improved. As a leader, my roles play a significant part in the lives of my constituents. Having had various leadership roles throughout my student career, I think that being committed to the task at hand is essential in order for everyone to be on the same page and working toward the same goal. During my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to student teach with my vocal teacher in the middle school and freshman girls’ choirs. After two months into the year, she had to leave for personal reasons, and it was a really hard adjustment for all the students in the choirs. In being the student teacher for 2 of those choirs, this was especially difficult because the kids didn’t like the change. The substitute teacher didn’t quite measure up to the standards that were already set, so it was easy for discouragement and negativity to set in....
Just like what Uncle Ben told in the Spiderman movie “Great power comes great responsibility,” as a leader it is my responsibility to build a systems and make sure that those systems are working to ensure students achievement, a system that will help teachers grow professionally, a system that will help other colleagues function to their fullest potential and system that will bind the community and other partners to be one of the pillars of the school.
