Heller’s Delegation Model- I have always had—and still do—have a problem with delegating tasks to other people. My biggest gripe with this is that people won’t be able to the task well, or to the level that I would have. This is not a productive way of thinking, and micromanaging is not conducive to teamwork for it will cause resentment. Focus on Your Team- So often as a society, we only think about our own success that we will do anything to achieve it. Working in teams is often difficult since you are required to adjust to doing what’s best for the team as compared what is best for yourself. Reading the Earnest Shackleton case study was truly inspiring, for we saw how dedicated Earnest was to making sure his crew was happy and healthy. He would forgo food so his crew would be able to eat, and he spent time entertaining them so their spirits wouldn’t be diminished. This display of dedication and perseverance is what every leader should keep in mind when leading their teams. With my final year in college coming up, I hope to be able to take this knowledge and work on developing myself as a leader. I plan on doing this by taking on additional roles at my job, joining a new student org, and working to take on a leadership positon at the radio station. I have been in my positon as a University Housing Ambassador for over a year now, and I enjoy it a great deal. The knowledge I have gained positions me to be a leader among the new employees who will look to me for guidance and advice. Now that I have been there for over a year, I am ready to take on more challenging projects to further develop my skills. Part of this includes taking initiative on starting projects that I know will benefit the entire office. This could include doing more data analysis, streamlining some of the processes, and refining the training process for new ambassadors. Taking this initiative will help me to develop as a leader because I will be able to take a risk and gain experience with starting and finishing my own project. Great leaders are not complacent, and they always want to become better. Taking on more of these projects in my positon at the housing office is the right step to take in avoiding becoming too
