Reflection for Leadership for Today 's Schools
After completing all of your coursework, what jumps out as having a significant impact on your learning?
This course was very informative, inspiring and thought provoking. I did a masters in Educational Leadership in the United States. That course never provided me with the information that I currently received. I was never exposed to Transformation, Transactional Leadership and Servant Leadership. The focus was only on Instructional Leadership.
In retrospect, I believe my professors wanted to prepare me to be effective in my role as a building leader without being tied up with “unnecessary” information. However, I believe that the knowledge of the other frameworks of leadership can help me to be a better instructional leader. I can move around the different perspectives when I am handling different situations.
In what ways did you increase the depth and breadth of your knowledge related to leadership?
My depth of knowledge has increased because I like the focus on being a change agent. This course has given me the ability to work along with others to develop a vision, mission and strategic plan to conquer issues affecting any school that I may be called to serve. The title of this course is called “Leadership for today’s schools.” However I would like to rename it “Leadership for today and future schools.” Why am I proposing a name change? This course has forced me to look into the future. As a leader in today’s schools I need to see what is happening in my community that can impact what is expected for students to learn and know for the
Dr. Tanisha L. Heaston, principal of Treadwell Elementary talks to me about educational change. In my first meeting and interview with her, she displays many if not all the leadership benchmarks of a Change Master and Facilitator. Defined by McEwan (2003), a Change Master is a highly effective principal who is flexible and futuristic. A realistic leader who is able to both motivate and manage change in an organized, positive, and enduring fashion. As a Change Master, she uses a situational approach since every school community requires somewhat different skills. Dr. Heaston respects change resisters, procures resources for her school, and trusts her teams which aligns with ISLLC Standard Six.
The way a leader is defined and remembered is not only through his actions and accolades, his followers and the leaders he developed also go into a leader’s legacy. Much like a legendary football coach, whose coaching tree goes on to do great things, I desire to join an organization that not only assist in my development as a leader, but also facilitate in the development of others as well. How could I contribute to the development of leaders? My largest contribution will come from my experience of being the United States military, where I was not only trained how to become an efficient leader, I was also taught on how to facilitate the growth and development of others leaders as well. I am able to accurately assess and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of an individual and assist in the development of a plan of action to address these areas. One of my personal beliefs is that vast knowledge is useless unless it is passed down to someone. With that being said I take every opportunity possible to share any knowledge that has helped me along the way.
It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. It is Important to remain teachable before, during and after your leadership position. With leadership comes great responsibility. I have been blessed with a great work ethic, I was disciplined with as a Child and bringing it into my young adult years has helped me a lot. My passion has been in Early Childhood, my passion is what drives me to be the leader I want to be. Every leader should want to lead to where their followers surpass themselves.
Basically, every day we concentrated on a specific area of leadership and had a speaker come in to lecture. Each speaker brought his or her own style and it was quite interesting to see the more human, fun, enthusiastic sides of these teachers - aspects to which students in their classes may not be accustomed.
To diagnose my learning needs I must be honest and realistic about myself. The strengths I have as a leader consists of personal mastery and building a shared vision. By sharing my vision with others, and building upon my skills while seeking constant growth, I strive to take an approach to leadership that fosters an effective, nurturing educational environment for the entire school community. By creating this type of environment, as well as through embracing and enhancing my leadership strengths, it is my goal to contribute to society by inspiring people to become better not only as teachers and students, but as compassionate human beings.

In addition to recognizing the importance of work-life balance, the program also helped me nurture skills that are crucial in the promotion of an effective balance between work and other aspects of life. As I was going through the program, I was able to balance my commitments in the program with my personal life. This helped me to reduce stress and so I approached my responsibilities positively and with great energy. Furthermore, valuable tips on how to maintain proper work-life balance including the need to exercise and meditate, not to seek perfectionism, to always have a schedule and adhere to it, and ensure I stay healthy.
One of the assessments revealed that I am too task oriented and I tend to focus less on the concerns of people. I can enhance my leadership skills by gaining a balance with people and my tasks. Overall I have strong charismatic leader behaviors which accounts for building trust with my employees. Being trustworthy is a core value of being a successful leader and team player.
Was there information or insights that helped you that you didn’t expect to learn at the outset of the course?
