The take away that I want to focus on from today’s class are the Captain Sully case, and the boiling frog phenomenon. I feel that both topics touch on key characteristics that are needed to become a great leader and motivator. In both topics the class was able to articulate how the ability to makes quick decisions to and change one thinking before it’s to late are crucial for success. In class the Sully case resonated with me because I just saw the move a week earlier. In class we spoke of how captain sully had to deal we the rising amount of tension, and uncertainty that comes from a crashing airplane. Each of these concepts is important to how well I do my job and whether or not I can accomplish what I set out to do. It is not impossible to influence a family or an adolescent for the better, as the movie shows, but it means that I have to actually know what I’m doing and know the signs of the concepts I’m looking for in the adolescent. I cannot just guess and blunder my way through, not if I truly care about the adolescent or child I’m trying to aid. The movie is a wonderful look at a young, immature girl growing up into a loving and loved young woman who lived through awful trials and benefited from the good people around her. I may only be in the lives of the adolescents I help for a short period of time, but I want them to remember me as their August Boatwright who loved and believed in all they could do.

It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. Before taking the StrengthsFinder® assessment I didn’t know what type of leader I was, but I felt I had leadership traits that I could not describe. After answering several questions from the Clifton StrengthsFinder® 2.0, I found out my top five strengths. These strengths consist of individualization, arranger, learner, input and responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to go over my top five strengths to talk about which four domains of leadership these strengths fall under, how class material is applied, and the actions to best utilize my strengths.
Lewis had drawn the graduates in with his tone and style of delivery. The tone of his address was very motivating and dynamic. Lewis delivers his speech in a way where he is always moving his arms around and being excited. If he was not moving around and looking excited, students might have lost interest in what he was saying, causing them to not pay attention and not hear important life lessons. I believe to be a successful leader it is important to not just focus on one particular style, but to incorporate many. If you take a few high points from each style and learn to mesh them together you should have a better understanding of leadership as a whole. This class has taught me that being a leader is a lot more challenging than people may think. Leaders have to wear many different hats in many different situations. To become an effective leader you have to work at it. It may come easy to some, but to others it is a skill that is shaped and molded over time. Different experiences and situations help mold leaders into who they become. I hope to use the different styles we have learned about to mold me into an effective leader in today’s society.
Maalouf’s lessons of history, influence, and perspective will stick with me for the rest of my college career as I continue to grow as a student and piece of history. Maalouf shows how the past and future have a lot to hold for all generations to come. And I hope to be a positive influence on our world’s history.
For example hope offers a reason for living and for doing their assigned duties. Through Ralph's leadership he orders the building of a signal fire, for that day that they may be rescued. The idea of the fire enhances the capability of Ralph's leadership skills and reasoning. This also ensures Ralph the confidence to be more then willing to face greater and more impossible challenges in the near future. The two stories that I chose to discuss are Mark Twain’s “The Notorious Jumping Frog" and Kate Chopin’s “The Storm”. These stories had very different settings, yet they both reeked of irony. Throughout Leading as a Way of Serving, there were many lessons that I experienced and learned. By completing reading assignments, writing papers, participating in class discussions, and attending the class retreat, there were many opportunities to learn course content as well as realizing new aspects about myself. At the beginning of the semester, I did not know that I would be learning so much and that I could retain so many new life lessons in such a short amount of time.
The learning obtained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course has been valuable. From this course, I have learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed throughout the eight week course have provided the unique insight necessary to be an effective leader. The insight gained allow for the identification of the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continually develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am better able to shape my leadership style and goals so that I can achieve my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things right and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
