Introduction to my Five Strengths The five themes from my Clifton Strengths Report overwhelmingly echoed what I already see as active assets in my personal and professional roles. My five attributes in order from highest to lowest are Activator, Command, Woo, Communication, and Futuristic. These have aided and sometimes cause misunderstandings, but these are elements I have learned to hone, define, and exercise in order to develop others under my charge and myself. Activator In defining activator for myself there is a large number of habits that remind me it is a verb, it's a word and characteristic of action. I am the person who talks to the people in the grocery store line and leaves by having already given a verbal dissertation on my life or viewpoint. This is a downfall/habit I believe I learned from my family, I am the third generation of "20 Minute talks" I have an inability to stop talking or openly discussing with people. As I have learned to harness myself over the years, I see how it aids in my influencing people, because if someone hears something enough they will begin to believe in your vision or your observation. This also is my direct line to building trust, because it is not only spewing out words and explaining it is paired with listening and being attentive to what others are saying. I align everyday discussion with purposeful direct professional advices. Communication does help me with students when they are trying to explain something and lose words or cannot describe things, it helps them fill in blanks. In Physical Education it is key, I not only have to show visually the movements and actions but verbalize and communicate the sequences for students to use as guidelines for success. If my communication is not clear I had a bank of different word approaches to get through to students if it must be differentiated for them. This trait will trigger the desire for results that are meaningful and carry validity to present clarity on the topic of the contempt perception of Physical Education as an academic subject, and its teachers as professionals. Which can lead to a qualitative evidence to present to professional learning communities, administrations, school boards, and possible grant specialist for further research for the school and its students. Command is a strength that strives to take charge of the information and keep seeking until thoroughness is met. This is because this strength it allows me to have the tough conversations and pose the hard questions until all avenues are exhausted. My WOO is the charisma and passion toward spotlighting the lack of respect in the discipline of Physical Education. It presents itself as curious and forthcoming excited to learn which will lead me down several research avenues and present new evidence and findings for a well-rounded product. . Unquestionably, this strength will be the one to bring to the forefront of researching the marginalization of Physical Education as a subject and its teachers respect as academic professionals. The Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment with a fun experience that provided very useful information about myself. The questions were interesting and thought provoking. However, the time limit on each question meant that most responses were my first instinct or gut response. I think the time limit keeps a person from over thinking the questions and makes them respond with an answer that is true to who they are. I agree with the five strongest areas identified in my assessment which were strategic, futuristic, learner, command, and ideation (Clifton, Anderson, & Schreiner, 2006)
I was excited to take the Gallup Strengths Finder assessment. Although I am more reserved and shy, I typically find myself placed in leadership positions. I am always surprised when people refer to me as a leader but family members and close friends have made me more aware of this personality characteristic. I really enjoyed taking the Gallup Strength Finder assessment and I can see why this would be an assessment growing in popularity across the globe. When I finished the assessment, my results showed that my strengths, from first to last, are developer, empathy, input, connectedness, and restorative.
My five strengths according to the strength finder include; balance, this helps me be aware of treating all people equally regardless of the situation. I am neither in anyone 's favor or against anyone as this to me is selfishness and individualism. This would result in a situation where some people scale heights due to connections while others are lagging behind. I believe that a consistent environment where the rules apply to everyone is the best for individuals to function best (Rath, 2007). Flexibility is my next strength. By knowing that things do not always work out as planned has helped me change the tactics of how I perform my tasks. For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the evaluation offered an accurate assessment of my strengths. The input theme states my mind is like a sponge, soaking up information. As a lifelong learner, the second theme is also, correct. I have a quest for knowledge about things that interest me. I am responsible, in my job and life. As a maximizer, I focus on long term goals and strive toward excellence. As a nurse, working in an environment of change, the arranger strength in my personality allows me to adapt easily and figure out the best way to accomplish tasks (Strengths, 2012).
This was a very important assignment to me and it turned out to be very beneficial at this point in my life personally. I’m currently trying to figure out, what’s my next move and what are my true strengths and my true passion. Taking the assessment allowed me to have many questions answered that I’ve been wondering about. It even answered some that I haven’t had to face yet. The Clifton assessment revealed my Top Five strengths which are Communication, Competition, Deliberate, Woo and Achiever.
This reflective essay has critically reviewed my personal and professional skills that are essential for communication and developing positive relationships with others. It has discussed the skills identified in the skills audit that I needed more confidence in for communication and effective relationships. It has finally linked two communication theories to both skills
As I stated earlier, loyalty is one of my top values, and I believe that if I am a loyal leader many people will trust me and develop their leadership attributes. Along with loyalty comes relationships. To me, the two go hand in hand. It is nearly impossible to have a healthy relationship when someone is not being loyal. I believe my greatest opportunity to be loyal and successful is to utilize my leadership ability to fulfill my potential. I plan to use the strengths I discovered from StrengthsFinder 2.0 to navigate my values down whichever path I decide to choose for the remainder of my college career, and any post-graduation occupation. I believe that my top strength, harmony, will continue to affect the way I make relationships. Harmony has been an extremely large part of my life and I intend to rely on it throughout my life. I know that my second strength, adaptability, will give me the tools to encounter anything that life throws at me. I understand that things are not always going to go the way you intend. Having the ability to adjust my thought processes is just one way adaptability will make a difference in my life. I believe that my third strength, WOO, will help me to build relationships and expand my network no matter how old I am. Being able to relate and connect with others is something I strive to do in my daily life. My fourth strength, communication, goes hand in hand with WOO.
Part I. Strengths Personal Profile System Two strengths I learned during my Self Awareness assessment were being a good listener and showing loyalty. I really try to be a good listener in all situations. I like to hear the whole story or complete process, whatever it may be. I am cautious about making decisions without having all the details.
As I started to read the results of my strengths finder, I was not surprised. My top five strengths were positivity, achiever, arranger, belief and responsibility. I definitely expected responsibility, achiever, positivity, and arranger. Growing up, those qualities and strengths have always represented me as a child and they continue to represent me today. I have always had a sense positivity, no matter where I go and how sad I may feel. I am also excited to see that positivity is my number one strength, because I live my life in a positive way, no matter what the situation may be. In high schools all over the world, athletes are competing for fragile spots on a team. Some athletes are just joining the team to take care of their PE credit. When high schoolers think of “physical education” they think of many students in a small gym, dripping with sweat, and then next period attending a class. Meaning, most students don’t like this thought. Those students now take up a spot on the team, maybe not even knowing how to play this sport. Other students might have been playing this sport all their lives but they're simply, not good. On the other hand, some students have the excuse of “staying out of trouble” or “being with friends”. ...e any conflict is to become calm an effective communicator. Reinforcing your listening skills are a must when looking to further your communication skills. Let’s face it you want to listen well before setting a plan of action. Never jump into any conversation unprepared, not only can it cause conflict but you can lose credibility if the meaning of what you are trying to say is lost. Verbal communication is always best, talking to another individual face to face is a good idea this way you can judge their reactions by their body language and you can express the correct meaning. But, remember that verbal is not the only form of communication. Your nonverbal communication can say a lot to the receiver (ie. body language). Use supportive messages rather than defensive ones can be more productive. Any conflict can be resolved through correct and effective communication.
Communicating effectively is an essential skill for a supervisor. During this course, I learned a great deal about different types of communication skills. While there are many facets of communication, after reading the chapter on Communication: Theory and Modern Media, I realized that I needed to improve not only my receptive language skills, but my expressive language skills. While I am very good at hearing what is being said, I realized I do not always listen carefully to what is being actually being communicated. In addition, I also realized that my word choices play an integral part of communication. As a result of the information I learned in this chapter, I have recently made a conscientious effort to carefully listen when people are speaking to me too, as well as monitoring my word choice to avoid misunderstandings and ambiguity when communicating with people in all aspects of my life.
Communicating effectively and in a professional manner is not only important in how other people view us; it could determine which jobs we are able to obtain as employer Kevin Weins brought out. Everyone can benefit from trying to communicate more effectively. Trying to improve my own communication skills has helped me in my own life and career and can help other people in their own careers and in their daily life.
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
