In high schools all over the world, athletes are competing for fragile spots on a team. Some athletes are just joining the team to take care of their PE credit. When high schoolers think of “physical education” they think of many students in a small gym, dripping with sweat, and then next period attending a class. Meaning, most students don’t like this thought. Those students now take up a spot on the team, maybe not even knowing how to play this sport. Other students might have been playing this sport all their lives but they're simply, not good. On the other hand, some students have the excuse of “staying out of trouble” or “being with friends”. Specifically, “In the United States, there are more than 553,000 boys who participate in high school basketball.Only about 11,550 of these high school players go on to play college basketball at the 730 colleges with basketball teams,” (Lang). In the US, a ton of boys play high school basketball but way less than that go to play college basketball. This means, that coaches should allow those athletes that are eligible for college to play instead of giving equal time to all members of the team. Not that many athletes have enough skills to play in college. In particular, “Some high school athletes will play college sports and a very few will go on to play professional athletics. For teen athletes, this means keeping the balance between academics and athletics, for only one out of every 12,000 high school athletes will become a pro” (Lang). If a high schooler plays college sports very few plays at the professional level. 1 out of 12,000 will become a pro so high school athletes should focus on both athletics and academics. If coaches gave every athlete equal playing time maybe one out of all of them have enough skill level to continue on. It is hurting that athlete if equal playing time is given instead of earned by the skills displayed by that
To start with, there is an argument as to whether or not coaches of school sports teams should offer equal playing time to all of their players. According to Alan Goldberg, every athlete wants playing time, but not every athlete can always get it. In other words, only the athletes that put in the effort can have playing time because that shows that they really want playing time. The athlete can not only put in the hard work but he/she needs to be skilled at that sport. Coaches of school teams should not offer equal playing time to the players because teams play to win so they will put their best players in, players who are skilled and put in the effort will make the starting lineup, and the athletes are paying for practice not playing time.
What is the most popular sport in America? The most popular sport in America would be the rugged game of football. Millions of fans wait in anticipation each year for the season to begin. The truth is the game is a very dangerous sport. It’s rooted with violence and physical aggression. Players are groomed from their youth to get bigger, faster, and stronger. Football is geared toward physical domination, get your opponent before he gets you with tackling, hitting, or by any means necessary, take them out before they take you out. Playing football can be painful from getting bumps and bruises, broken bones, to concussions, and in extreme cases death. Beside the point, four years of football taught me life lessons on and off the field of play. Whether from sportsmanship in the game, to there are no shortcuts in life, to discipline in my education. What I learned during those four years I would never take back that experience for anything in this world.
The National College Athletic Association has been having problems with college athletes, and money for many years now. The NCAA has had problems in the past, and present with college athletes accepting money from college boosters. A booster is a person who supports a college team. Most college boosters are alumni, community members, parents of current or former players, or even professors or other college employees. Whether they are attending a game, giving money, or buying a car for an athlete, they are still considered a booster. This problem has occurred many times over time and needs to be addressed because it is affecting the world of college football.
Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
Growing up in America sport is a vital part of everyday life. From childhood to adulthood some aspect of sport pertains to virtually everyone. As a child one is looking to find a hobby so they play sports. As a parent fathers look forward to coaching their child’s little league team. And as tens and young adults sports are an opportunity to become a “somebody” and do something amazing. The general perception in high school and college is that athletes have it all. If you’re good at sports then you don’t have to worry about schoolwork or popularity and essentially you have but not a care in the world; you are invincible. Although it is great to see some succeed and become professional athletes many others do not have the same fate. The fate of these athletes, which happens to be the majority, is what drives my opinion on college sport.
Student athletes live very busy lives. A typical school day runs from 8:00-2:30, add in a two- hour practice or game, score a part time job, dive into some family time, a grand slam of homework and catch a little bit of sleep. Students are more stressed due to the many activities they are a part of. This issue affects a lot of people not only in this school district, but most other high schools throughout the country. All student athletes exercise more than other children who are not involved in an extracurricular sport. In school athletics, the players are called “student athletes” meaning that school activities come first. John F Kennedy once said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” He believed that a person who has conditioned their body will exceed when striving towards intellectual achievements. Parents across America have seen the influence that physical exercise can have on students. After school physical education programs, such as sports, not only condition the students to maintain physical health, they also work with teachers to make sure the mind is also being conditioned through learning. Students who participate in school sports are required to maintain their grades to academic standards to be able to participate in the activity. Even though many people would agree that physical education is important to a student’s health and learning process, schools across America are still suffering budget cuts that directly affect the physical education programs and hinder the amount of resources schools have to educate students about physical education. In some cases programs have been removed from schools entirely due to the tremendous cuts in school funding. Physical education programs in schools should not suffer from budget cuts because they support making positive life choices, the exercise is good for an active brain, and being physically fit is important for children as they grow into adults.
“Kids have to sacrifice so much for sports.”(Stevenson 2). Kids can't be kids because of sports. They can't hang out with friends our simply do school work. The importance behind this is kids should be able to do other things than just sports. Also “ Coach's treat young athletes like military recruits”(Stevenson 16). Kids should not be treated like this. A study done in 2006 by researchers from Nationwide Children's Hospital stated, “On average, 2.44 injuries occurred for every 1,000 athletic practices or competitions at the high school level.” While this may be true, Issues & Controversies, Hannah Stohler, an athlete, states, “high school sports programs are worthwhile, despite the risk of injuries, due to the wide variety of positive effects they can have on students.” This shows that athletes believe that playing sports far outweigh the risk of getting injured. Another point that opponents could argue, is that high school sports take away time from academics due to the time commitment that sports require. For example, according to the author of “The Benefits of Participating in Sports”Alex Monica, “Sports force you to organize your time so that you can both go to practice and finish your homework. The key is finding a balance. If you can learn to organize your time then you can succeed in both.” This is an example showing how it is very possible for athletes to manage their time while participating in a after school
If coaches were required to play all students high school teams would not be as good as they should be.”Once talent is skimmed remainder feel left out”. So what that means is that once players get cut or players they feel as if they are not good enough or if players are not played they sometimes feel as if they are not liked and will sometimes not try or give full potential to the team or coaches. “One way ensuring that adults are more responsible to the children they serve is mandating training and certification”. What this means is that if a coach is benching a player there is probably a reason and they are not just doing it for a random reason and they most likely would not have their coaching job if they did not know what they were doing.
Contact sports can give kid’s serious brain damage. This brain damage can potentially lead to deadly diseases such as CTE, a pathologic condition that stems from repetitive head trauma such as concussions. Younger children and teenagers brains are still developing. This could mean contact sports are even more threatening to children of a younger age, because they could lead to serious, sometimes fatal, brain damage and it can stunt a child's growth. These are just a few examples of what contact sports can do to a child, so the question is, if contact sports can affect people in such horrible ways, should parents let their young kids play?
Your kids wants to play sports, but that sport is football, what would you say? Well my opinion for that is yes, kids like to challenge themselves. When they get tackled they get adrenaline through their body and then they feel so good that they want to keep playing. Kids want to play football, but parents don't. They think that their kids will get hurt. But some kids do get hurt. Kids like challenges so they play football. Some people may think football is a bad sport, it's not. Kids know that they are going to face other teams and they know how fun it will be to tackle them. Football isn't a bad sport, it is the most challenging sport and kids love challenges.
Every athlete knows the struggle of defending the importance of their sport. It's a constant battle between you and the irrelevant opinion of that one person who's always trying to say something. There's two types of haters: those who don't even play sports (except in gym) and those who just think their sport is better. Being a volleyball player, people are always making jokes about volleyball being an "easy" sport. These people don't understand the full picture of it all, especially the football players.
Student Athletes always have it easier! Athletes don’t have to work hard. Athletes are so lucky. Student athletes always have bad grades. Throughout high school I heard these statements often. Student athletes are no better than students that don’t do sports. Student athletes don’t get the “perks” that many people believe. Although student athletes are often recognized for their success in their sport, they are given no praise for success in the classroom. These students are also often perceived to be ignorant because of the stereotypical bias most people have against athletes. Many studies have proven that these myths about students that play sports do not apply to many them.
