Class Dismissed: How TV Frames the Working Class is such an awesome narrative and one worth watching as it clarifies the depiction of women, minorities, and the working class in the media. Class Dismissed breaks a lot of important new ground in analyzing the ways in which race, sex, and sexuality intersect with class, offering a more complex reading of television's regularly one-dimensional representations. The information that was exhibited is connected with what I definitely knew as far as how the television portrayals has negative cultural attitudes and public policies that specifically influence the lives of regular workers individuals. The new ideas that broadened my thinking in new directions is the point at which a "middle class" character
The film that I decided to watch for this assignment was the show Jane the Virgin. The film is about a working and religious young Latina virgin, who becomes pregnant after being unintentionally artificially impregnated. The program humorously mocks commonly used figures and plans in Latin telenovelas. The show has never shied away from getting into political topics, which is why it is one of the most advanced shows on TV right now. The intersectionality aspect in Jane the Virgin is how the show gives us a lesson about abortion, teen pregnancy, and the institutional racism that Latino people face.

During the 1950‘s suburbs such as Levitown were springing up all across the country, and the so-called American dream was easier to achieve for everyday Americans than ever before. They had just come out of two decades dominated by The Great Depression and World War Two, and finally prosperity was in sight. The need for women to work out of the home that was present during the war was no more, and women were overwhelmingly relegated to female-dominated professions like nursing, secretaries, and teachers, if they worked at all. Televisions became very popular, and quickly became part of the American cultural canon of entertainment. Leave It To Beaver is a classic American television show, encompassing values such as respect, responsibility and learning from your mistakes. But, at least in the episode used for this essay, it is also shockingly sexist to a modern viewer. This begs the question, what does the episode The Blind Date Committee1 say about the gender expectations of the 1950’s?
I chose to analyze the sitcom That 70’s Show, a show that follows the lives of a group of teenage friends: Jackie, Donna, Hyde, Kelso, Eric, and Fez. The show addresses several social issues of the 1970s, including: sexism, sexual attitudes, drug use, politics, and the recession. I selected certain episodes from Season One based on their titles and descriptions; ones I thought may deal with sexism more in-depth than other episodes.
The media portrays the upper class as something to strive for. Obtaining wealth and material possessions will bring you a happy life. The only way to get ahead is to emulate the rich and powerful and to live vicariously through them (Kendall 316). The media’s emphasis on the upper class takes away from people living life for themselves. Instead, they are persuaded to obtain a lifestyle that is realistically out of their means. Kendall states, “Largely through marketing and advertising, television promoted the myth of the classless society, offering on one hand the images of the American dream fulfilled wherein any and everyone can become rich and on the other suggesting that the lived experience of this lack of class hierarchy was expressed by our equal right to purchase anything we could afford”. Exaggerated views of the rich and successful in America are largely portrayed via television. Which gives a false idea of what happiness, wealth and material possessions can bring (Kendall 317). The poor and homeless are at the bottom of the class structure and are often overlooked, ignored and only portrayed as deserving of sympathy. They are stereotyped to be people who have problems such as drugs or alcohol (Kendall 318). Kendall goes on to explain that the middle class is considered the “working class” and are
Since television came into existence, it has evolved into a useful tool to spread ideas, both social and political, and has had a great effect on the generations growing up with these heavily influential shows. To these younger generations, television has taken the role of a teacher, with the task of creating a social construction by which many of us base our personal beliefs and judgments on. This power allows television shows take the opportunity to address problems in a manner that many audiences can take to heart. Many television shows present controversial topics in a comical matter, in some ways to soften the blow of hard-hitting reality at the same time bringing attention to the issue being addressed. In the television show, Everybody Hates Chris, season one, episode four entitled “Everybody Hates Sausage”, the stereotypes that continue to fuel racism are examined in a satirical motif, and class is presented in a comical way, but carries serious undertones which present a somewhat realistic view of the different social strata within the United States.
In her blog Bolick (2011) stated that “I grew up watching both I love Lucy and The Honeymooners and even as a child I always wondered why the wives on these shows didn’t have to work.” Women in television shows decades ago mirrored the roles women played in society. Yet, women in society, although they have made major progressions towards equality they are still portrayed as the housewife. For the first time, America has a woman running for President of the United States. But parents think that children do not have suitable role models because of what they see on television. Does that fault fall on producers of television shows and movies? Or on the parent for allowing the children to watch those shows? Children look up to people in their immediate presence the most, imitating what they see and are accustomed to the most. With the changes in of roles in television, however, society is still noticing the unimportant things. During a recent study conducted by “The Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film” Lauzen (2016) stated that “Moviegoers were more likely to know the occupation of male characters than female characters…… In addition, moviegoers were much more likely to see male characters at work and actually working than female characters.” What this shows is that people have become so accustomed to the way society ‘used to be’ that they pay attention to the details
A Class Divided The film A Class Divided was designed to show students why it is important not to judge people by how they look, but rather who they are inside. This is a very important lesson to learn: people spend too much time looking at people not for who they are but for what ETHNITICY they are. One variable that I liked about the film is that it showed the children how it felt to be on both sides of the spectrum. The HYPOTHESIS of the workshop was that if you out a child and let them experience what it is like to be in the group that is not wanted because of how they look and then make the other group the better people group that the child will have a better understanding of not to judge a person because of how they look but instead who they are as people. I liked the workshop because it made everyone that participated in it, even the adults that took it later on, realize that you can REHABILITAE ones way of thinking.
One of the greatest exports of American culture is American media. American media is one of the most widely distributed and consumed cultural forms from the United States. This means that not only do Americans consume large quantities of their own media, but many other countries in the world consume American media, too. People in other countries will not interpret or understand the media in precisely the same ways that Americans will and do, nonetheless, many aspects of American culture and American reality are communicated to numerous viewers as part of the content in the media. The influence of the media on women is not unknown, but it was especially prevalent in the 1960s. According to David Croteau and William Hoynes, both professors of sociology, “Media images of women and men reflect and reproduce a whole set of stereotypical but changing gender roles” (quoted in Mahrdt 1) and, as society changes and opinions are altered, television shows adapt. However, the television show Mad Men is unique because it does not show life today, but the life of the 1960s. It shows what life was like for the women who lived during a time when the “feminine mystique” controlled society.
Stratification across the states has created a divide between classes. It has allowed the upper class to solely remain with the upper class, while the working class only associates with the working class. It has caused people to only feel comfortable within their own class. Stratification has allowed people to see others as those to be feared or as those to be ignored. It has also created an unspoken boundary that says it is wrong to associate with another class. In the film, it was evident how the people only felt comfortable to associate with those who were like them. Even more than that, though, it revealed how it was not expected for the classes to intertwine. Throughout the 70's we witnessed an uprising of African Americans, and feminists through the programming of our televisions. “All in the Family”,“The Jefferson’s”, “ Good Times”, “Maude”, “Mary Tyler Moore Show”, and “Rhoda” all can be attributed to the apparent transitions of our political times.
One of the major sources of inequalities experienced for generations is gender inequality, which has perpetuated, but adapted socially and culturally, into the present twenty-first century (Ridgeway, 2011). Television (TV) essentially adopted a large role in administrating and promoting these social inequalities, and therefore it is important to assess whether or not there has been progress throughout the decades. In 1980, David Morley conducted a study on how people from different social positions made sense of the British television program Nationwide. Using Stuart Hall’s “encoding-decoding” model, Morley found out that audiences needed to have certain understanding of the topic to make sense of the program. He later deduced that social background in itself does not determine if one forms the “preferred” reading of the subject at hand, but rather the availability of “tools” to fully interpret the topic. Resources for decoding messages will differ between people of different social class, i.e. education; therefore creating diverse interpretations for the same media text. (Croteau et al., 2012) This counter-argument
