The film that I decided to watch for this assignment was the show Jane the Virgin. The film is about a working and religious young Latina virgin, who becomes pregnant after being unintentionally artificially impregnated. The program humorously mocks commonly used figures and plans in Latin telenovelas. The show has never shied away from getting into political topics, which is why it is one of the most advanced shows on TV right now. The intersectionality aspect in Jane the Virgin is how the show gives us a lesson about abortion, teen pregnancy, and the institutional racism that Latino people face.
Unplanned pregnancies are very common in the show. The show tackled the topic of abortion by revealing that Jane's mother, Xiomara, had a medication abortion after learning that she had gotten pregnant from a one-night-stand. The show also touched on abortion earlier when Jane is mistakenly artificially fertilized in the pilot episode, and the topic comes up as an option when Jane is figuring out what to do about her pregnancy. But for Xiomara’s case, it was taken in a different situation. Although she had the abortion off-screen, so the episode began when she already had the abortion, it marked the first time a Latina character has had an abortion on television. …show more content…

The writers believe that it is “critical” to present the topic and its relative narratives through as many lenses as possible. Xiomara has already made her feelings on having children at this point in her life very clear earlier in season 2 so it would have seemed inconsistent if the character had been shown struggling with the decision. We find out she had the abortion when Alba, her mother and Jane’s grandmother, asks her about a medical bill delivered to the house.
