The doctorate is the highest academic degree that a University can award to a student. In recent years questions arise about the purpose of the contemporary biomedical PhD: What is the doctorate for? Which are the goals and components required for a doctoral education in biomedicine? Defining the PhD is a difficult task, since criteria for a successful PhD seem to differ among disciplines, institutions and countries. As a common element successful PhD candidates are expected to produce an innovative and original piece of research that contributes to the knowledge within their field (thesis). In addition, within the biomedical sciences PhD students are usually required to: (i) participate as a member of a research group, (ii) work on problems …show more content…
Traditionally, doctoral training has been seen as a way to regenerate the academic staff, and those graduates who opted for careers in industry have been considered as not good enough for academia. However not all students aim for a career within academia [2,10]. A variety of factors may play a role in the students’ decision to embark in a PhD, including the career perspectives, intellectual stimulation, personal satisfaction and other personal, social and/or economical conditions. As PhD supervisors it is vital that we acknowledge and accept this reality. This will allow us to openly discuss with our students their ambitions and expectations and to set up career and learning outcomes for their degree. Such communication is critical to develop students’ awareness of the importance of skills development, in helping them to identify their strengths, the possible gaps in their skills and how to address them. One of the tools that can help students and supervisors in this regard is the use of a “personal development plan” (PDP) within PhD programs [14]. The PDP is ‘a structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to reflect upon their own learning, performance and/or achievement and to plan for their personal, educational and career development’ [14]. By defining specific skills and time frames the PDP will provide PhD students and supervisors with a basis for discussion about personal and professional
The AMGEN Summer Scholars research experience will contribute to my plans to become a M.D./Ph.D. candidate, and ultimately an Oncologist, by helping me develop critical and independent thinking as well as creative skills as they relate to the field of medicine. It will also help me develop a more thorough understanding of biological concepts, how they directly apply to medical treatment, and the ways in which biotechnology fuses multiple fields of science to create technologies to care for others. The opportunity to assist in creation of the technologies that will be used on my future patients will ultimately improve my ability to treat their illnesses in adaptive ways. The opportunity I would have to read, interpret, and be a part of creating
a doctoral journey can be a long process, with many benchmarks for the students' dissertation to satisfy. Many students have left dissertations in progress and unfinished, because job and familiy committments have been a higher priority.
The purpose of higher education is that it fosters and produces the skills and knowledge for individual self-growth, drives innovation, and challenges societal norms (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2011). For an individual student, higher education is seen as a place that cultural capital is obtained or challenge, in which students are able to reconstruct their identity in society (Corey et al. 2011). Self-growth for an individual is not only limit to cultural or social growth, but also pertains to career exploration through the courses and the work related experience they are exposed to in higher education. The theory that I chose to analyze in this paper is the constructivist approach with a dual use of both the Solution-Focused Therapy
I believe each one of us is gifted with a certain potential, and we are trimmed and molded accordingly by the tribulations of time until we reach our goal. Julia Roberts is an actress, Ronaldo a soccer player, and I am a doctor. What separates me from them is that, they have mastered the art, which in essence fulfills their destiny while I still soldier on with hard work in hand, and ambition right ahead. A wise man once said ‘Success is a journey, not a destination. Have faith in your ability rest will be just fine’. Inspired by my mentor at Shifa Clinical Research Center Islamabad, who I credit for my understanding of the sublime nature and cause of the term ‘research’, I wish to be on board as faculty at the institution in
A major hurdle in this academic career that I hope to have is going to be the lack of expertise in the designing, implementation and evaluation of clinical trials.
In terms of the National Career Development Guidelines, I think this activity touches upon all of the main domains. The activity address the personal demands and commitment of the career, what is needed, in terms of education and development to obtain that position, and it address the long terms implications of what is needed of the career and it’s impact on the community. Coupling this activity with a personal journal it will give the students to ability to apply the action steps of the domains so they can have a realistic idea of the their desired career path. For adults, I think the National Career Development Guidelines severs as a base for the counselor to provide specific actions to help the client. Since career counseling can be very overwhelming I think it is a great tool to use for new counselor to get an ideal of the career counseling process.
Taking the time to reflect on one’s career can increase self-awareness and enhance professional development. A career development plan is a confidential and integral document created by an individual which outlines the activities undertaken during their life. Hence, a professional development plan documents goals and skills required to accomplish dreams and aspirations. Moreover, a professional development program is reminiscent of ones’ past experiences and a glance at the future. Having a professional development plan in place is critical for graduate study to keep track of one’s progression. The principal purpose of a developmental plan is to give a description of my educational and professional background as well to explore my personal goals as it relates to my profession growth and development.
In this paper I will be covering and analysing personal and professional development. Four respective patches have been undertaken for this module which addressed. Professional development plans, reflective practice, mentoring and supervision and the critical reflection of learners in the learning process. The first patch is talking about the use of Personal Development Plan enabling learning and development in professional practice. The second patch is discussing and evaluating the effectiveness of reflection, by promoting learning and development in professional practice. The third patch talks about mentorship, supervision and learning styles in the workplace. Lastly, the final patch discussed about the commitment of the student in the learning process. As well, right the way through this essay, the quotes from the patches will be used in bold.
With increasing demanding in the career service industries, this research would also serve to guide and assist career development institutions in ensuring competitiveness and profitability. Since the data would be obtained across New Zealand, It is expected that this research will assist in the development of competitive strategies of career development universities organisations within this country. It is also expected that the results of this research would further enhance the practice and teaching of best practises in career development regarding tertiary organisations as well as student's individual
My desire of studying biomedical sciences stems from my sciences interest, as it demonstrates a world not visible to the naked eye, plays a big role in everyday life. science specifically biology and chemistry are stimulating and challenging subjects , over the years of studying them ,my interest has increased because learning things about how our bodies function and how it relates to god’s creation is particularly interesting for me. I also find it very important because I’m Muslim. The biomedical science degree will open for me the door to learn more about the vast field of biology and its branches to a greater depth. I developed my knowledge in the science field by taking support classes in the lab at school; I was fascinated by how the body can function in different circumstances and the complexity of DNA, different organisms, chemical reactions, and also very importantly the mathematical aspect which gives me the chance to develop and use my logic and it inform me to new ways of looking at given problems.
After my experience in witnessing what translational research could do for individuals who have a small chance of survival I wanted to know how I could hold the place of both a researcher and physician. The titles researcher and physician seemed very contradictory to me as I sat across from Dr. Wang and he explained his profession. I was filled with questions but the primary one that resounded was “How could one conduct research and practice medicine”? I was in a conundrum, but Dr. Wang in his shaky but confident voice said to me “An MD/PhD my dear is the degree you want. It’s complex and thought provoking. You utilize your left and right brain, and the impact is far-reaching.” Dr. Wang being a child of Chinese immigrants and myself being

Coming from nonbeliever’s background inevitably made my reflection a challenge. I was raised by an uneducated parents, in which made me hardly had a strong memory on how they had raise me up in a biblical or morally context. Therefore, as I do my reflection on some reading assignments and classes, I can only reflect on my role as “mother” to my both sisters who are eleven and sixteen younger than me. I comprehend that playing the role “mother” is not my responsibility instead of my parents, nevertheless I have been playing that role ever since they were born. That time, I wasn’t even a believer. Both my parents were “absence” in their roles. As I reflected on it, I admitted that I had made many mistakes. But the good part is, I pray I will
