a. “How would you describe the costs of the proposed ballpark if you opposed the proposal?” Frame / Use the “evidence” provided in “class discussion” to support your viewpoint. As an opponent to the new proposal, I believe that sales taxes should not be used for the construction of a new ballpark in Seattle. One of the reasons that supports my belief is that increasing the sales taxes would represent US$750.00 per five-person family over the twenty-year period of tax. Another reason is that a family building a new home in the Seattle area will be extremely affected by the increased tax because this tax will raise the building cost by $200. Finally, there will be a $250 million tax increase for the residents of the Seattle area. Therefore,

...clusion the “Sports Construction Era” ballparks are a radical change in the way we experience a major league baseball game. The radical changes benefit both the baseball club and the fans. Finally the new style of construction employed by these three “pioneer” cities has been such a success that they have become the standard for the future of major league ballpark construction throughout the country.

A BID is defined as, “[a]n organization of property owners in a commercial district who tax themselves to raise money for neighborhood improvements” (Cullingworth, 387). Assessments are then made mandatory and collected by the city. Thus, funding does not come by way of the federal government, but city’s can utilize grants to help fund their efforts. In this way, the federal governments support the community economic development, but takes no direct efforts in funding the programs. The city’s then offer incentives, in the form of tax exemptions, to attract developers. In turn, new construction would create jobs and lower unemployment. Theoretically, the encouragement of a tax incentives is to stimulate the economic growth of an area with higher unemployment rates. The problem is many developers tend to gravitate towards the city’s that can offer greater incentive. Officials have wondered if these programs benefit the cities with the greatest
He then voices that teams threaten their cities and fans by arranging a relocation as an effect of them not receiving a new stadium. Not only do they threaten their cities, teams also promise that new stadiums could be an economical help for the city; creating new jobs, growth, and development, when in reality, they rarely revitalize the community in any way. Orlando Pardon, Miami business owner, is a perfect example of how stadiums and arenas can actually wound the community. Pardon states, “since the stadium opened, not only have the profits not risen, but on game days the regulars stay away; afraid of traffic. We don’t see any changes, you could even say it’s hurting us.” Team owners’ threats and promises create a reoccurring chain of events that uses taxpayers’ money for things such as new stadiums instead of schooling and roads, and can essentially harm businesses and decrease job opportunity within the surrounding

According to a summary by the Texas Legislative Council, the amendment would increase “the portion of the market value of a residence homestead that is exempt from ad valorem taxation for public school purposes from $15,000 to $25,000.” (8) An analysis by the Dallas Morning News observed the amendment as translating to a $120-130 a year relief for the average Texan. (Garrett) Additionally, the proposed amendment also increases the exemption amount for elderly or disabled persons. Finally, the amendment would also allow the Texas legislature to prohibit the reduction or elimination of a tax exemption imposed by the governing body of a political subdivision. (House Research Organization 5) A hearing on the measure was held by the Texas House Ways and Means Committee on May 12, 2015. (Proposition 1 Hearing) Based on the hearing, I believe the North Texas Tea Party and the Texas State Secretary Office (among others) are for the measure. Some opponents of the measure included the Center for Public Policy Priorities, the Texas Taxpayer Research Organization, and the Texas Association of Business. What arguments for an against the amendment do these contenders
History. In this class we had a presentation we were required to complete. I was in a group of four, we got the topic of Environmental Reform. Environmental Reform is changing the way people use resources; land and nature. Everyone including myself was provided an article about our topic. We were to read and annotate it. The next step was to create a presentation. Each person was to create three slides, the slides were to contain the problem presented in the article. The next slide was the solution to the problem. The last slide was how it affects us today and whether it was progressive or not. I got an article about the Hetch-Hetchy Reservoir and the Conservation Debate. It was about the mayor attempting to create Hetch-Hetchy into a dam to provide water, electricity, etc. for the city. Environmentalists were against the whole plan and even though this was very long ago I agree with them. It doesn’t matter at this point, because the mayor was successful. However, Environmentalist were able to put a stop to all the other attempts. As stated in the article, “...the very old problem,” as Roderick Nash wrote... of whether parks, reserves, and wilderness are for man … or for nature.” In my opinion, they are for nature, all those lands were put here long before we were, so we must respect that. Through this project I was in able to grow as an academic student by gaining
Mark Bittman’s article, “Taxing Sugar to Fund a city,” emphasizes that on one hand, the taxation of sugar sweetened beverages would be a bonus. On the other hand it could continue to not be supported by the people and government. Taxation of sugar sweetened beverages is being considered in many different places throughout the world. The taxation was becoming a failure everywhere, until it worked for the first time in several cities. Cites such as Northern California, San Francisco, Albany and Richmond. These cities opened up their ideas to this new type of taxation, once those places became supportive many others begin to also be supportive of this new taxation. Philadelphia plans to use the taxes received for the needy, community schools, public parks, recreation centers and libraries. Some cities support using the money this way rather than using the tax for safe free drinking water like in Berkley and Mexico. Taxed products

The city of Warren, Michigan is currently having a debate over whether to hold a special election to raise taxes. The taxes would go toward the prevention of shutting down 3 of the cities library branches. According to The Detroit News, previous tax increase proposals have been turned down by the voters, " Henderstein said library operations have been funded by a tax levy of 0.5 mills since 1957, an amount reduced to 0.4873 mills under the Headlee Amendment. It generates about $2 million annually. Voters denied a proposed tax increase in 1985. The 20-year tax proposal would bring in about $3.4 million each year. Henderstein said the extra money would keep the branches open and allow for expanded hours, additional programs and materials. Until now, Henderstein said the libraries have managed with minimal funds and only eight librarians while experiencing a circulation increase of 33 percent ove...
