An intellectual college student, who attends Lipscomb University explains the challenges and obstacles that students with disability encounter in school. I interviewed Rudy Castillo, who was detected with autism at the age of three to discuss his personal experience. This student as any other played sports throughout middle and high school but also was bullied by others. Rudy’s story explains his journey about overcoming the struggles that autism presents. After all, Rudy’s plan is to help others understand his disability and encourage those with autism to embrace their abilities. Through the support of his family, Rudy Castillo received help from a specialist in Guadalajara, Mexico. He begins to explain “At age eight, I lost the ability to communicate with other which left my parents to devastate who were able to communicate with me.” It reflects how autism does not affect himself but others around him including our family and friends. Also, he mentions, “I had always experienced many difficulties forming relationships in school and never really had any friends from elementary through high school which also affected me.” Rudy begins to start crying after explaining the difficulties many students have never experienced throughout his childhood. Although, Rudy is excellent at expressing his message across and providing material to support his ideas. Today many individuals do not understand that have a disability does not prevent you from attending college or playing sports. I’m astonished to know that my brother can memorize every important event in history which many of us fail to do. Afterward, I asked, “What motivates you to overcome challenges that you face?” Rudy’s response was, “You work with what you have, and live the life that God has given you to you as a gift.
I have accomplished many things that people would always doubt of especially attending college which requires a higher academic standard. But, I’m here to inspire others with autism that God is in control and our faith is what unites us.” He has dedicated his life to spreading his message through churches and on social media informing others that there is hope. Everyone can relate to the question since we all face challenges throughout life that others wouldn’t understand. In the eyes of God, Rudy is an average person who is a disable person, but it didn’t stop him from attending college. Also, Rudy explains that “Autism defines me and he understands others who have experience and related to them.” On numerous occasions, I asked my brother if he would wish wasn’t born with a disability but always replied with no. Personally, I would have never wanted my brother to be born with autism since he has experienced many difficulties in
life. Rudy and many other students detected with a disability have experienced bullying in school. He has experienced bullying because of his disabled since he did have a tough time communicating with others at a young age. Rudy stated, “Yes, I treated poorly by other students in my school, but I never let that get to me. You hear stories about disability students being physically hurt by the bully which is sad to hear. Today many adults and teenagers see disability as a joke without trying to be informed of the causes and effect it has on that person.” This is the reason I want to present Rudy’s story to tell how it affects the individual’s emotions. A person that is detected with a disability is kept with it today doctor’s still have not been capable of finding a solution to fix it. Although, my brother explains that he has not experienced any bullying in college since people are aware of the disability. He is not treated terribly by the students or professor who understand the difficulties of comprehending his actions and personality. Children’s detected with autism have a difficulty controlling their emotions since it affects them personally. They aren’t about to express their anger or sadness as a normal person would react. And this is a reason my brother would never reveal how poorly he treated and bullied throughout the years. Throughout the interview, which lasted ten minutes, Rudy Castillo showed his experience with autism and helping others who suffer from it. Disability enables the person from communicating, walking, or understanding but through a specialist, Rudy was never detected with high symptoms of autism. In this interview, He explains the challenges that many other disability students face in school by bullies or teachers who find them different. Overall, the problems Rudy experienced he did not allow his disability to stop him from attending college. He expressed, “It allowed me to feel welcome into the community where I’m not treated with disrespect.” His purpose of sharing his story is to let the people know how to prevent cruel treatment among disability people. Also, encouragement is a major key in allowing those with a disability to understand opportunities are available for them. Rudy expressed the amount of encouraging words from his friends and family made a difference in his life. Until this day, he continues to receive thousands of encouraging words of people who have seen him grown throughout the years. This is one story that continues to impact many other parents and families who are learning to process it.
“The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal” by Jonathan Mooney is the story of his journey around the U.S. in short bus nonetheless to meet with different children and their families who have faced challenges in school due to ADD, ADHD, Autism, and other learning disabilities. Jonathan Mooney himself faced the disability of Dyslexia and often had to deal with many challenges in school himself, but he appears to be one of the more fortunate ones, who was able to grow from his disability and ultimately get a degree in English. Needless to say, his book and journey lead the reader to question what really is “normal”, and how the views of this have caused the odds to be stacked against those who don’t fit the mold. Throughout, this story, for me personally however, this story gave several events that I found moving, and had the potential to influence my further work in education.
John Robison the author of “Call Me Different, Not Difficult,” has autism and lived most of his life with his condition undiagnosed. In the article Robison shares his personal experiences as well as his sons to convey the struggles students with autism face. Robinson enlightens the reader that not all teachers are capable of teaching students with autism. One must be understanding in order to have patience to accept the difference students with autism have.

The Case of Temple Grandin paints a picture of a young woman’s determination and hard work while struggling with autism during a time when the disorder was unknown. This case discusses Grandin’s challenges, early diagnosis, growth and development in school, and support from her mother. Temple Grandin could not speak like the other children at the age of two, so because doctors could not find any physical issues she had been subsequently labeled as brain-damaged. To communicate with others, she would throw tantrums and scream. She could speak by three and a half years old with the help of speech therapy. A few years later at the age of five, Grandin was diagnosed with autism so her mother worked with her 30 minutes every day to keep her from being placed in an institution. At her aunt’s ranch, Grandin develops the “squeeze machine” a device used to apply pressure without being stimulating. Grandin excelles in school and receives her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce College in 1970. After her graduation from college in 1970, Grandin attends Arizona State University where she earns a master’s degree in cattle in 1975. In 1989, Grandin earns her doctoral degree from the University of Urbana-Champaign in animal science. Grandin has never married, but she is proof that individuals with autism can lead productive and notable lives (Meyer, Chapman, & Weaver, 2009).
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has two main core criteria, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition (DSM-5). The first of the two criteria is ‘Persistent Deficits in Social Communication and Interaction across Multiple Contexts’ under which there are three categories. For all teens, the transition into adulthood is generally seen as a challenging and scary process. For teens diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as their caregivers, this transition is often more complicated. The period of transition for individuals with ASD into adulthood is intensely more challenging due to their “unique characteristics, the lack of services that address the special needs of such individuals in adulthood, and the expectations of society for a typical path to adulthood in the face of atypical problems” (Geller and Greenberg, 2009, pg. 93). What is Autism? People are quick to label people as Autistic but very rarely understand what it means though they may nod their head and say "ohh makes sense". Autism - also know as ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder- is a complex developmental disorder affecting primarily ones communication and social interaction skills. Meaning they have difficulties communicating effectively or even at all. They struggle in social setting and don 't typically excel in social games or activities.
I interviewed a woman who has a child with special needs. The child is now in kindergarten. The mother reported having a normal pregnancy with no complications. This was the second child for the mother, who has another child who was five years old at the time. The mother disclosed that during the pregnancy, she was in the process of separating from the child’s father and that this caused a moderate level of stress. At the time of the pregnancy, the mother was also working full time as a waitress in a local restaurant. The mother reported that her job required her to be on her feet for long periods of time. She was able to work until around a week before her child was born. The mother reports that the child was born around two weeks early but that labor was easy and the child was born healthy.
Autism is a disorder characterized by significant problems in communication and social functioning. Autism is actually called Autism Spectrum Disorder and encompasses a broad range disabilities such as Asperger syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome, and Pervavasive Development Disorder (Dunlap & Fox, n.d.). There are also varying degrees of the disorder from low-functioning (no communication and no social interaction) to high-functioning (some communication and inappropriate but existent social skills.)
