The Case of Temple Grandin The Case of Temple Grandin paints a picture of a young woman’s determination and hard work while struggling with autism during a time when the disorder was unknown. This case discusses Grandin’s challenges, early diagnosis, growth and development in school, and support from her mother. Temple Grandin could not speak like the other children at the age of two, so because doctors could not find any physical issues she had been subsequently labeled as brain-damaged. To communicate with others, she would throw tantrums and scream. She could speak by three and a half years old with the help of speech therapy. A few years later at the age of five, Grandin was diagnosed with autism so her mother worked with her 30 minutes every day to keep her from being placed in an institution. At her aunt’s ranch, Grandin develops the “squeeze machine” a device used to apply pressure without being stimulating. Grandin excelles in school and receives her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce College in 1970. After her graduation from college in 1970, Grandin attends Arizona State University where she earns a master’s degree in cattle in 1975. In 1989, Grandin earns her doctoral degree from the University of Urbana-Champaign in animal science. Grandin has never married, but she is proof that individuals with autism can lead productive and notable lives (Meyer, Chapman, & Weaver, 2009). Grandin meets the criteria for autism diagnosis because as a child she had impairments in three major areas of development: social interaction, communication, and behavior, interest, or activities. Behavioral interventions are used to increase functional skills, promote the use of speech and reward appropriate behavior (Hansell & Damour, 2008).
The title of the book is called, “Thinking in Pictures”, written by Temple Grandin. Temple is also the author of, “Animals in Translation.” This book was copyrighted in the year 1995 and was edited with more updated information in the year 2006. Thinking in Pictures is an autobiography. An autobiography is a book written about their lives, written by themselves.Throughout this book multiple pictures were shown when she was a younger child of her showing symptoms of autism, blueprints and designs of her work, and pictures of her giving lectures and informing others of Autism. There are multiple severity levels of autism, Temple was a high functioning autistic individual, with that being said she was able to write a book about her life. Temple is a very gifted animal specialist and has shown multiple times throughout the novel to never give up and that possibilities and endless.
Monument 14 is an exciting, compelling novel, written by Emmy Laybourne with 352 pages that tells the story of 14 kids that are living through what seems to be the apocalypse. It was published by Square Fish Inc. on May 28, 2013 and it is a realistic fiction novel. I chose to read this book because the informant at the bookstore told me that it was popular and had a great story to it, which she described to me briefly. I hoped to have a book that put me in a situation that would not normally happen with lots of action, adventure, and unpredictability.
I was born as Henry Wyatt Gogolin on July 8, 2001 to Jessica Webster and Hank Gogolin in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Although I do not recall all 5,403 days of my life thus far, I will likely always recall several events that have distinguished my personality and struggles from other people; the involuntary experiences have occurred as a result of my low placement on the autism spectrum. While this mental disorder has improved my academic performance, it also results in extensive perfectionism and causes generally simple social skills to serve as difficult to maneuver. I have also displayed autistic characteristics during events I held minimal control over, such as divorce, loss of family
I arrived at the Hsi Lai Temple in the city of Hacienda Heights around 3:00 p.m. on March 7, 2014. Although I am Chinese, I have never been to this temple before because my family does not practice Buddhism. This is my first time collecting data about the His Lai Temple. This method is referred to as participant-observation which is, “the anthropological method of collecting data by living with another people, learning their language, and understanding their culture” (Arenson and Miller-Thayer 521). The temple is built on a hill top. After driving up the long hill into the parking lot, I found that before entering the temple, I walked up many stairs. In the brochure For Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple, it said that the name Hsi Lai stands for “coming to the West”. The temple, which was founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, signifies the dedication of Taiwan’s largest Buddhist organizations called the Fo Guang Shan. It took ten years to build the temple and was completed in 1988. This $30 million Temple on 15 acres of land was financed by donations from Buddhist devotees from around the worlds.
Grandin acknowledges that people with autism do think differently than those without it, however, throughout the majority of her article she categorizes people as different types of thinkers. Within the article she categorizes people as either language, visual, or audio thinkers. Why would Temple Grandin classify people this way rather than just keeping it autistic and on autistic? Grandin’s usage of “thinkers” is due to the fact everyone thinks differently, regardless of being autistic or not. She categorizes into these types of thinkers to explain what the world looks and sounds like to others.
Before completing the assignment of reading “Thinking in Pictures,” by Temple Grandin, I did not have much knowledge about autism. My only understanding was autism was some sort of neurological disorder that is seen similar to mentally handicapped individuals to someone with little understanding, like myself. I am very thankful to have been given an assignment like this one that gives me more knowledge of something I should already have in my line of work (though I am sure that was the whole purpose of the assignment, to educate the ignorant). I now have a better understanding of the cause, learning process and functioning of different levels of this defect.
The short documentary video “Prisoners of Silence” focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders with a clear emphasis on autism. It further delves into the rather controversial method of treatment for autism known as facilitated communication, which was first developed in the early 1990s. The video follows the introduction and ultimately the downfall of such a treatment as controversy quickly ensues after a series of sexual abuse cases and ample scientific evidence are produced.
In the novel Grand Avenue. Greg Sarris uses the theme thread of poison to connect all of his separate stories about the Toms’, a Pomo Indian family. He proves that the roots of a family are the basis which gives the family its structure, even if those roots are bad. In the Toms’ family they’re roots were poisoned from the very founding of the family starting with Sam Toms’. His poison was not the fact that he tried to steal a married woman away, but that he was filled with secrets, deceptions, and self hatred. His family was founded on these poisened roots and passes the poisen down generation after gerneration. The only way to stop the poison, or inner self hatred taken out in other forms, was to let go of past and talk about the secrets and lies. Once a person does this they are able to learn from their mistake , in a sense the break free from the poison. If Sam Toms’ , the founder or root of the family,would have broken free of his poisen by talking about his mistake he made, his whole family per haps would have turned out completely different. As a result of his secrets and lies his family was rasied to make the same immoral desisions as he made throughout his life. His family, like Sam, didn't take responcilblity for their mistakes, which spread the poison onto the next generation. Tracing the poison throughout the Tom’s beginning at the roots, shows just how important the roots indeed are.
Giving others who do not suffer from autism or caregivers an insight on how the individual may be feeling and what they are going through. This book can also help numerous medical professionals such as speech-language pathologists and pediatric doctors. As Grandin stated in the book that not all sufferers act, think, and feel the same so this novel may not be beneficial to readers who are looking for information on a wide scale of individuals who suffer from the illness. She also stated that there is no cure for autism, however some medications can help with some symptoms such as depression or anxiety. What intrigued me the most about Grandin was that she never gave up and worked on her social skills. Not only did she became a spokesperson for autism, but also became a professor at Colorado State University in which both require public speaking and being comfortable in front of people.
What is Autism? It’s a developmental disorder that impairs one’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Christopher Boone from the novel A Curious Incident in the Nighttime and Temple Grandin, who has become one of the top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry both fall on the high-functioning spectrum of autism. Even so, they do not display the exact same traits and behaviors. Whereas Grandin thinks in pictures and employs this unique gift for practical use, Christopher thinks in patterns and fails communicate his talents with others. However, they both speak their mind and have trouble understanding facial expressions and emotions.
People living with autism spectrum disorders have different ways of interpreting and navigating the world around them. Temple Grandin gives insight on what life is like living with an autism spectrum disorder within her novel, Thinking in Pictures. Within her book, Grandin discusses how she herself lives with autism as well as others she has met. She reflects on her experiences of growing up, gaining an education and working within the cattle industry. Temple Grandin partially attributes her successes to her visual thinking process, though it’s not perfect, and her mother’s influence on her environment, an often unchecked stimulus.
Autism is a developmental disorder that appears within the first three years of a child’s life. It affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Autism affects 1 out of 68 children. It is also the fastest growing disability in the United States. There are multiple types of Autism, some children are considered high functioning, and some are low functioning. “High functioning” is when a child with autism can function in life, and completes jobs, and chores with little to no help. “Low functioning” is when a child with autism cannot complete simple daily tasks without help, and (or) constant supervision.
Temple Grandin was born to Richard Grandin and Eustacia Cutler on August 29, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts. From birth, her parents could tell that there was just something “different” about her. When Temple was two years old, she was diagnosed with “infantile schizophrenia,” also known as autism in today’s terms. Autism affects nearly 5 times more boys than girls. In fact, 1 in 54 boys, and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism. Due to Temple’s autism being very severe, the doctors told her parents that she was a “lost cause” and that she should just be shut up in a mental institution to live out the rest of her years. Temple’s parents would not stand for that. They tried to make the best of the situation by working with Temple each day. Temple was finally able to speak her first words when she was about three and a half years old.
There is no known single cause of autism. Researchers are investigating a number of possible theories including genetics, heredity, medical problems, problems during pregnancy or delivery, as well as environmental influences. It is widely accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in the brain structure or function. There is evidence from neuropathological studies that autism has its origins in abnormal brain development early in prenatal life which continues postnatally, showing acceleration in brain growth measured by head circumference (Zwaigenbaum, L., Bryson, S., Rogers, T., Roberts, W., Brian, J., & Szatmari, P., 2005). The disorder also seems to have a genetic basis, although researchers have yet to find the specific genes that link to the onset of autism. There could be a cluster of genes that have somehow interfered with normal brain development and function. Two to six children out of every thousand will end up with Autism. Autism is one of the fastest growing disorders with a great amount of studies being put behind it. With its vast amount of different signs and symptoms, different forms, how its treated, and arguments about how exactly the disorder came to be , Austin can very well be one of the most confusing, and researched disorders, for its a disorder that stirs up tons of questions but yet gets hardly any answers. Autism is usually developed between ages of one and three, it effects communication and how the child interacts with others. It is defined by behaviors of the child and “ spectrum disorders” that re different with each person. (About Autism, 2008, para 1). Symptoms of autism can very in many different ways, and even different categories. Take the category of social interaction and relationships symptoms include : non verbal communication development problems such as , eye - to - eye gazing, body language, and facial expressions, failure to make friends with people their own age, lack of interest, and lack of empathy. The category for verbal and non verbal symptoms include : Delay or lack when learning to talk, about forty person of people with autism never speak, problems with starting, and keeping conversations, repetitive use of language, and difficulty understanding what someone is saying. Finally the category of interests and play include : unusual focus on pieces, preoccupation on certain topics, a need for the same routine, and stereotyped behaviors like hand flapping and body rocking.
