Theoretical Foundations and Review of the Literature/Themes
The theoretical foundation used in this study is the authentic leadership theory, as defined by Avolio, Gardner and Walumbwa, (2004), act in accordance with deep personal values and convictions, to build credibility and win the respect and trust of followers. Authentic leadership is a developable skill set individuals can enhance, to lead more effectively through self-discovery.

Authentic leadership begins with the leader understanding themselves, making it a distinctive theory. The authentic person has two parts, the internal self and the how they relate to the external surroundings (Waite, McKinney, Smith-Glasgow and Meloy, 2014). Four components of authentic leadership are, self-awareness, internalized moral perspective, balanced process, and transparency (Waite, McKinney, Smith-Glasgow and Meloy, 2014; Hinojosa, Davis McCauley, Randolph-Seng, and Gardner, 2014).
The interpersonal dimensions of authentic leadership are self-awareness and internalized moral perspective. Self aware leaders take the time to process their experiences and the impact they have. Authentic leaders also understand their values and beliefs and find ways to operate in a way that is inline with those values and beleifs.
The intrapersonal dimension of authentic leadership is a balanced process, and transparency. Authentic leaders are able to understand the world as it is and then choose the best response needed. Authentic leaders operate out of what the situation calls for rather than their emotions. The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.

Leaders are encouraged to maintain the perception of authenticity but making sure that their words are consistent and reflect their action or intentions. This model describes what makes up an authentic leader by saying, “Authentic leaders demonstrates their purpose, practice their values consistently, and lead with their hearts as well as their heads” (George et al. 152). The Authentic Leader Model also talks about balancing intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. A leader must know what drives them based on internal motivations and external factors. The drive that a leader demonstrates will reflect and spread to your subordinates (George et al. 152). The aspect of drive through intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the Authentic Leader Model relates to the tenet of being a determined leader. If a leader has their intrinsic and extrinsic goals established, then he or she will be able to lead the group towards the direction they envisioned. Additionally, when directing your team towards a goal, it is vital to also help those under you to accomplish their personal goals as well. That is what Coach Marcelo did a great job on. A man by the name of Daniel Goleman in the Military Course Reader believed that all special leaders share a common trait which is emotional intelligence (Goleman 102). The five components of Emotional Intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill (Goleman 103). In particular, the motivation portion of emotional intelligence is seen in this tenet. Through the determination that a leader displays, his or her subordinates will become motivated to accomplish the goal. A leader is someone who can encourage even those with feeble hearts, insecure souls and self-doubting minds. A leader takes not only their vision but everyone’s vision and create one beautiful creation that is seen throughout the world. My experiences with leadership range from the worst to the best. Once holding a great leadership position myself, I can testify the benefits of great leadership and the disadvantages of horrible leadership. Through my experience with great leadership and the effects on the people, it seemed to the naked eye that everyone was thinking the same thing at the same time. In actually it was the leader uniting the members together on one common chord to produce a sound that would remain in the souls. In an effort to understand the questionnaire, one must first understand the definition of an Authentic Leader. Genuine, trustworthy and reliable are a few words that are interchangeable with the term authentic. Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. Destiny, brought the book True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership into my life and I want to bring it into the lives of others. More specifically those who may believe they weren’t born with the characteristics or traits to become a leader or those who have not found their passion or purpose in life; their “True North.” The book, written by Bill George and co-author Peter Sims, compiles a series of interviews with 125 managers from Howard Schultz of Starbuck’s to Dan Vasella of Novartis. The interviewees guide readers through their journey to become the leaders they are today; discussing their failures, successes, obstacles, personal tragedies and triumphs. The stories of each manager prove the True North’s thesis, which is no one person is born a leader and there isn’t one path to becoming a leader. The book is separated into three sections: 1) Leadership is a Journey 2) Discover Your Authentic Leadership 3) Empowering People to Lead. Before giving overviews of each section, it is important to define an authentic leader.

Bill George’s interview was about trying to guide you on being a good leader through following your heart and passion so that you can make a difference in everything you do. Bill George is expressing that finding your leadership style takes hard-work, time, and commitment. However, the interview with Bill George is about being an authentic leader; an authentic leader is self-aware of their actions, they are genuine through the building and finding their inner strengths (Kruse, 2013).
