Authentic Leaders An authentic leader is someone who over the years has developed a unique vision; a person who is respected, not only because they are expert in their field, but is also respected because of their humility. This notion that I could become a top executive someday was sparked when I first came across a TED talk led by Sheryl Sandberg COO of Facebook. From that point on, I went to Amazon and bought her book Lean In. I was so inspired by her tenacity and vision of women in leadership roles. There are many quotes that I loved through the book, but these are one of my two favorite: “Leadership is not bullying and leadership is not aggression. Leadership is the expectation that you can use your voice for good. Authentic leaders have revolutionized the world of business by focusing on what they are passionate about, on becoming the best in their industry on their specialty. They strongly believe in having the right people on board to help drive their successes and lead with humility. One thing that I have learned and found interesting in reading the Good to Great by James Collins, is that the leaders of some of the most successful companies are not even recognized by the masses. Take a look at Charles Walgreens the founder of Walgreens – not many people know that Walgreens was the first to revolutionize the convenience drug store or the fact that they were the first to start the drive through pharmacy that is now seen everywhere. Walgreens for centuries also remained on top outperforming many top competitors in the stock market. They have profound convictions for for their leadership; Their behavior always reflect their core values and they view themselves as individuals that “lead with their hearts as well as their heads while also building enduring organizations” (George 2003). Leaders are encouraged to maintain the perception of authenticity but making sure that their words are consistent and reflect their action or intentions. The first way of defining authentic leadership is the intrapersonal perspective. This perspective focuses on the leader’s life experiences and the importance he or she appends to those encounters as being critical to the development of an authentic leader. It incorporates the leader’s “self-knowledge, self-regulation, and self-control” (Northouse, 2013, p. 254). Another way to characterize authentic leadership is when a leader maintains an open and honest relationship with his or her followers. Authentic leadership relies on persuasion and persuasion relies on trust. For the organization trust is the most important asset than the brand, product, service, leader or individual combined. Also remember to encourage others to come forward with their abilities and talents. Motivate them to step up and take on a challenge. The final thing in my philosophy is to do what makes you happy. And like authentic leadership, it inspires employees to become leaders themselves. Authentic or emerging leadership can empower employees to achieve long- term results. Authentic leaders know that the key to a successful organisation is having empowered leaders across the board to ensure that bottom-line results are achieved. This success will reinforce the effectiveness of their leadership and attract talented staff, align staff’s vision and values with that of the organisation and empower everyone to sustain long-term results. Throughout my life, people would have never considered me a leader because of my reserved and shy nature. Their image of a leader was someone outgoing and charismatic, so they couldn’t comprehend how I could have been an ideal leader. They essentially overlooked my leadership qualities. Sometimes it was due to my culture and gender. I’m a Mexican woman and in my culture women are seen and not heard. I remember growing up my dad once told me that a woman’s place was in the kitchen. So growing up I didn’t view myself as a leader because I was constantly overlooked for who I was. After going into depth more in my HR classes about leadership it help me realize that the experiences that occurred to me in my lifespan had relations to leadership.
Leadership the action of leading a person or organization. For me leadership is a relationship. Leadership development is the ongoing process I need to use in order to become a successful leader. Over the years I have gathered leadership traits from those I looked up to, there was plenty to learn and still more to learn today. The biggest leadership influence on me is from the Chiefs at my current unit, Coast Guard Aviation Technical Training Center. If you asked me about my leadership philosophy this time last year the result would be quite different from the leader I am today.
