Throughout my life, people would have never considered me a leader because of my reserved and shy nature. Their image of a leader was someone outgoing and charismatic, so they couldn’t comprehend how I could have been an ideal leader. They essentially overlooked my leadership qualities. Sometimes it was due to my culture and gender. I’m a Mexican woman and in my culture women are seen and not heard. I remember growing up my dad once told me that a woman’s place was in the kitchen. So growing up I didn’t view myself as a leader because I was constantly overlooked for who I was. After going into depth more in my HR classes about leadership it help me realize that the experiences that occurred to me in my lifespan had relations to leadership. …show more content…
The reason why I didn’t raise my hand was because I already had a perceived definition that a leader was someone who was born a leader; they had charisma and power. Before class I full believed that leadership was derived from the Great Man Theory. So I knew that none of the characteristics, involved with the great man theory, applied to me. It wasn’t until people started giving out examples and explaining, that for those who didn’t raise their hands, they might have been leaders to their siblings, that I started thinking about the roles I play at home. Growing up with younger siblings was tough especially when I had two working parents. So I had to step up and become a role model for my younger siblings. I was basically thrust into a leadership position and had to set out rules, responsibilities, and essentially be there for my brothers. It was a lot of pressure because when something went wrong it reflected badly on me since I was the leader. Also, because I had to set an example to their impressionable minds and be the “perfect” sibling, someone who gets good grades, has a good personality, follows the rules, and a generally nice person. I found that setting an example was the most challenging because I basically was a teenager leading my siblings, so I know I made mistakes and wasn’t perfect; I had to make sure they knew that even though I made mistakes, I learned from them to become a better person. My family wasn’t the only time I had instances of leadership
I wasn’t phased much at first , but then my fiancee decided she did no want to be with me. I sold cars for a short time and was very good but I got sick and with no health insurance and It was just too much to struggle through. I then was out of work for almost two years with exception of army reserve which earned me basically nothing with child support. My credit and all my bills went to straight hell and soon I was homeless. I slept in my car. I then decided to ask reserve for release to go full time active which was a chore in itself. This was a mass of red tape and paperwork. I got in best shape possible and finally at age 42 went back in the army, the infantry no less. For some reason the people in the army can be less than fond of a guy that age going to
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
Step by step, I have grown more to become an influential leader. Before my senior year of high school, I was always timid and shy to speak up. I knew I was capable of becoming a leader with my responsibility and intelligence skills, but my shyness held me back from achieving a leadership role at school and in the community. At school, I broke out of my insecurity bubble when I became the President of HOSA and later the President of the National Honor Society. In the community, I broke out of my shyness when I became a lector at church and became a teacher assistant in Sunday school. I became more confident with myself along with the people at my school and community. My leadership skills will grow and will become resourceful for my
Coming into this major I had no idea what to expect and the same went for this course, but I did know that it dealt with leadership, something that I have been steeped in for a good part of my life. So with that, it was hard to really set any goals as to what I would want to improve in with my leadership style but I was able to pin point a few aspects that could use some work through learning about different leadership techniques and methods. By learning about how leaders are formed, different approaches to leading groups and various aspects effecting group dynamics, I could determine an individuals or my own strengths in leadership and the methods necessary to effectively lead various types of groups. Also by observing many others in facilitating the after school program it gave me much more of an opportunity to see what works and what does not, this is an opportunity very few leaders get without being thrust into a role that they are ill prepared for.
In my life i have encountered many different types of leaders. Some were strong and ruled with an iron fist. Some were weak and failed to lead me. We are all leaders in our own way, some of us are born to take the lead. Most achieve their goal of being a leader but most get pushed back and their leadership is diminished.
There are leaders that we see in every setting that we go through; these people usually come with different traits like being strong and ambitious. Being a leader is a quality that not everyone can achieve, but it is a quality that everyone should try and establish to move forward not only in there career but also in everyday life. Leadership comes with a lot of responsibility and is valuable in any society. Those people who are leaders are able make decisions for a group and lead a team while influencing their actions for the better. Leaderships stands a strong quality if they are able to leave an impression on their group or team members. What also comes with being a leader is accepting failure. When leading a group, sometimes situations occur that makes being a leader tougher than usual, but even during failure, when a leader is still strong and moving past the hardship, that tests there leadership skills.
Leadership is not defined by position. Leadership is an extraordinary responsibility given only to those willing to exude selflessness, decisiveness, and wisdom. CSM William R. Hambrick, Jr is an accomplished leader that embodies the values, attributes, and competencies that I aspire to convey to my subordinates. The impact that CSM Hambrick has had on my career and leadership philosophy is immeasurable. His far-reaching legacy is one of confidence, sound judgment, and empathy.
Kouzes and Posner (2012) described the best practices of what makes an excellent leader and what inspires people to follow leaders and develop leadership skills within themselves. Based on research that has been regularly reinvestigated and updated, the authors determine five major practices that consistently emerged in their study of when leaders do their best. The best leaders “model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart” (Kouzes & Posner, 2012, p. 3).
Bottom line: I do not find that my previous leadership positions as a Non-Commissioned Officer directly relate to my role as a warrant officer, in the sense that it is comparing apples and oranges, as my enlisted job was not flying helicopters. What my previous experience as an enlisted Soldier and Non-Commissioned Officer gave me was just that; experience.
After reading the book, there are many key take away from it. “Time pass and people die. But the
In this essay I will discuss my learning and professional development during the implementation of a project. I will discuss my leadership skills and relate this to relevant theory. Next, I will discuss situations which arose during the change process, which encouraged me to reflect on my leadership skills. I will discuss how I overcame these situations and how they developed my skills as a leader. Finally, I will ??
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill, regarding the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Leadersip can not definied by just one word but by action. I have seen development within myself through my volunteer service. Leadership is both a research area and a practical opportunity to share the ability gained as a individual, also through my organizations to lead or guide other individual team members who have a common goal. Volunteering in the church organizations matches my need to be of service to others. While volunteer at Fallbrook church I in return have been served I have been guided, nurtured, and challenge through the process. I have been
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
