For centuries, views of the world and its inhabitants have been expressed through various ways of art or philosophy. These views can often be related to the seeking of truth to the creation of life, politics, or the problems of the world from before, now, and after. Accordingly, it is by paintings, books, or music, that words or images have an abundant effect on people. Society indicates that knowledge is power, so then why are we sometimes burdened with the errors of generations before? The quote, “writing in English is the most ingenious torture ever devised for sins committed in previous lives. The English reading public explains the reason why,” by James Joyce; points out that any novelist, historian, or author writing about our previous failures as humans in history affects any reader in a way that brings up painful memories and leaves the reader with past knowledge. To be honest, I had to grab a chair and think for what seemed like hours before I could actually comprehend what the quote was saying. I thought to myself, “How can writing about the past bring pain to the reader? I understood how writing can bring knowledge to a person, but how can it affect anything in the present?” As Vladimir Nabokov said, “In reading, one should notice and fondle details.” So, I opened up my mind and started to analyze the quote. Self-regulation is a critical component in learning to write. There have been 25 studies that have shown that teaching students self-regulation strategies in writing has improved their ability to write. Self-regulation strategies have even improved writing in students with learning disabilities. So what is self-regulation in writing? In general self-regulation refers to the thoughts, feelings, and actions writers initiate to reach their writing goals. There are three types of self-regulation writers can impose to help improve their writing. They are environmental, behavioral, and personal. Taking a closer look into each of these will allow one to have a greater understanding of why self-regulation is a critical component in learning to write.
Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
Anyone who is doing any type of writing piece has a process. They may not know it but it is there and it exists. It is one’s approach to their piece and how they go about accomplishing it. It has to do with how you write it, how many drafts you do, as well as your revision process if you even have one. My writing process however has room for improvement. A summation of my writing process consist of heavy planning, one draft, and little revisions. Writing can be a very difficult process for those who do not know how to go about constructing
I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
Looking back on my first semester as an Ole Miss student, I have been taught valuable information that has made me a more educated individual and a more advanced writer. While reflecting on my development in the class of Writing 101, I have discovered that the learning outcome of the writing process has been the most beneficial to me this semester. Although I wrote my literacy narrative essay early in the year, it has proven to be the paper most related to the learning process I have chosen. Throughout this course, the writing process has taught me the important and necessary steps of how to write a comprehensive and organized paper that leads to a prosperous grade.
Throughout the semester, Journalism has taught me various techniques in which have benefitted my writing as a whole. These techniques have taught me how to shape my papers/articles in a more organized manner while managing to state all of my points/ opinions on the certain topics I’m talking about. On top of that, learning how to structure my writing properly has changed my writing for the better. From learning so many techniques, it made me look at the way news is announced differently as well. Although it is asked to discuss what was most valuable to our learning, I have two techniques in which have been very valuable to me throughout the transition of learning how to properly write articles. These two techniques are the Inverted Pyramid and The Wall Street Journal Formula.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
As a middle school math teacher, my professional writing is limited almost to none except for some grants writing. That is usually in an application format. Reading through the learning resources, I was able to see the amount of resources that are now available at our fingertips for a better writing experience compared to when I was in school years ago. At first glance this assignment seemed overwhelming because of my lack of writing skill. I understand the relevance of the assignment and the learning resources are laid out easily to find any help needed.
Based on a study sponsored by USA Gold Pencils results showed that 89% of the students’ ages 8-18 thought cursive was important. Home schoolers liked packaged curriculums that included cursive instruction. Many experts argue in favor of cursive writing not only because it is faster but because it is stimulating and improves brain development, language and working memory. The fact is the world is not cursive free and its future still unknown. For now it still has its place in academia.
In the beginning of this course on English and writing, I was a little trepidatious, but also quite excited. I have always struggled with writing, so I did not know how well I would perform in this class. At the same time, I was also looking forward to what I could learn, appreciating the thought that my writing could improve by taking a college English course. Indeed, the skills that I have learned during this class have improved my academic writing, and have allowed me to discover areas to develop further.
Coming into this class at the beginning, I thought that it was going to be a breeze, especially since writing was my strong point in high school. Not only was I wrong, but I struggled a whole lot more than I ever thought I would. As the semester progressed, I was able to find ways to make my writing more enjoyable to read by gaining the ability to clearly state my point.
