In the beginning of this course on English and writing, I was a little trepidatious, but also quite excited. I have always struggled with writing, so I did not know how well I would perform in this class. At the same time, I was also looking forward to what I could learn, appreciating the thought that my writing could improve by taking a college English course. Indeed, the skills that I have learned during this class have improved my academic writing, and have allowed me to discover areas to develop further. I am implementing numerous skills from the course that improve my academic writing. These skills include tips such as not using contractions; avoiding “there is” and “there are”; not using “really,” “very,” “a lot,” and “so”; using the active voice, rather than the passive voice; and using strong verbs. Additionally, writing a strong thesis statement with strong introductory and concluding paragraphs, and structuring supporting paragraphs appropriately also improves my writing. Reading actively by asking questions and taking notes helps deepen my understanding of a text and allows me to respond more thoughtfully and thoroughly. Finally, I am practicing proper citation methods to avoid plagiarism. These skills improve my academic writing, as well as personal correspondences. I am aware, …show more content…
Since I was previously not taught the correct techniques to organize and develop my thoughts, my writing tends to be disorganized. In my continued progress with the written word, I am learning to structure my writing logically. The second area to develop is building effective sentences and paragraphs. Using a topic sentence, presenting evidence and commentary, and providing a concluding sentence creates a coherent structure. These techniques build a solid foundation for strong writing. As I practice these skills, I hope to improve my creative writing
When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. English is an important and required course to take in any level of education. In the past, we all have taken various English courses that have helped us enhance our reading and writing skills. Over the couple of years I have been here at the University of Cincinnati, I have taken English composition classes, which have helped me evolve as a writer. However, after taking this course, my reading and writer skills have enhanced tremendously. With the goals and outcomes set for the class, that allowed students to gain an indication of the level of reading and writing skills will be accomplished. This English course was a vastly informative class. We covered lots of criteria material and discussed topics during class. During the course, I have accomplish a variety of goals I once thought were unachievable. I still have a little ways to go to become the best writer I can be but by taking this course I have been able to expand and learn as a writer, editor, and analyzer of my work, peers work, and academic work. I have learned from others as others have learned from me. I have tried to improve particular aspects of my writing but continue to struggle with other aspects. I have found new strategies and breakthroughs that have allowed me to improve my essays. However, I am still learning how to write and believe that I always shall be.
I thought I had mastered the ability of becoming an effective and efficient writer when I was in high school, but to my surprise I would later learn that there was much more for me to learn about writing. I did not always consider myself a good writer. In fact, it was something I had to work at in order to improve. As I continued my education in college, I gained more and more knowledge about writing. I learned different forms and styles of writing and a variety of details along with basic fundamentals that accommodated the specific classes had to write for. Before the beginning of this writing course, I have some limited experience in writing. I believe I learned a lot of things from writing course. This course helped me to identify the areas I need to improve. As a writer, I am confident that I changed throughout the process. My organizational, grammar and structural skills have been improved even though there are a lot of things need to be improved. I also understand that the process of writing in college is different from that of high school.
English 1 has been the most challenging class in my academic experience so far. The reason behind this class being so challenging is that writing has been and it still is a very hard task for me. Although I have had numerous difficulties in this class, I believe that within the past 16 weeks I have improved significantly as a writer and have become more comfortable with evaluating college-level texts.
This English class has prepared me not only for academic writing, but also for writing in my future career. I will continue to practice my writing skills by reading and writing more papers. When I started English 102, I started with a few things I already master and a few things that I end up learning after my time attending English 102. When starting English 102 what I master was I did not have such a hard time working with the MLA format since it was a format I been working on for years. While it is easy for me to write essay base on my own personal experience. Although writing is not my strong suit in English, following the rules and how the format should be would be consider my strongest side of English. As for my weaknesses with English is mostly that I have hard time making my sentences flow, since my sentences flow to me, but when others read it they may consider it a bit choppy or hard to read. Personally, this semester’s English course has provided me with a new kind of learning experience unlike any other I have attended in the past. After having a taste of what this course is , I no longer dread of having to write essays. I have become more confident with my overall skills as I turn in any work. I have gained a more confident feeling within my overall work as I turn it in. For me, the tools provided have been the key to the overall quality and improvement of my essays. During the course of the years English has never been my favorite subject nor my strongest. Last year, I had Ms.Ahn for AP English Lang. Most of we did was analyzing text, writing rhetorical essays, and persuasive essays. Most of the readings were either stories with something we touched greatly on was prejudice.
During this semester, I realized that I have breezed through many parts of the writing process in the past. I believe that since this class began, I have found my voice in writing and allowed it to speak clearly on the subjects we were instructed to discuss. My grammar and punctuation rules were rusty at best, and this class has allowed me, not only to polish them, but to add a few more to the list that I did not know of earlier. I love to use big words and give my readers very detailed descriptions, in hopes that they will be able to picture what I am saying. I am also very attentive to my words and try to use a variety of adjectives so they do not sound repetitive.
English Composition 2 has been an engaging and interesting class. As an online course, though it was void of face-to-face interaction, it was engaging and consisted of many opportunities to interact. I felt challenged in a subject that I have previously felt confident in. Though I lacked experience in MLA format, I initially felt secure and very prepared to do exceedingly well. I quickly learned that I had significant deficits in my writing abilities. I developed new writing skills including a better understanding of the MLA format, to pay close attention to the format or instructions of the essay, and how to analyze different kinds of writings.
On September 20th, I walked in to the classroom for my first college level English class at 7:30 AM. As I sat down at my seat, I didn’t know what to expect. The biggest question in my mind, though, was this: Will I learn anything from this class? Or will this just be another class where I complete assignments, but don’t enhance my skills? My question was soon answered, since throughout this class I have learned innumerable skills which have forever improved my composition. Specifically, there are three main goals which I have achieved in this class: I have learned to think and read critically, compose and revise in context, and reflect and evaluate.
Before entering this class, I thought I was prepared for college English. I had incredibly capable high school English teachers, who taught me detailed mechanics, creative writing style, and of course, the necessity of practicing good grammar. On entering this class, I quickly realized how little I had actually learned in my high school English classes. While most of my high school English essays I wrote were based on literature, the majority of the essays I wrote in this class have been more experiential and centered on real-life issues. I expected to be writing essays on books I read and articles I analyzed, but that was not the case.
