There are various opinions in academia whether or not we should still teach cursive writing in schools. Many people believe that computer technology has made cursive writing obsolete and an unnecessary form of writing. Most lawmakers and educational institutions still support and mandate that handwriting be taught in schools. This research will cover the history of cursive writing and its purpose over printing; whether it still serves a valuable purpose; and whether computers will replace the need for cursive writing altogether. There are various studies that indicate cursive benefits young learners and enhances cognitive and motor skills. Cursive was created to make the process of writing faster.

Prior to this bill being signed there was a lot of opposition and debate over the subject whether or not cursive be taught. Other states are now free to pass such legislation and most agree with North Carolina’s decision. The co-sponsors of this bill also realized that some students were exposed to cursive while others were not, which was very problematic. Not using cursive was as if they weren’t educated. They also felt kids should be comfortable writing in cursive before the end of the 5th grade. Based on a study sponsored by USA Gold Pencils results showed that 89% of the students’ ages 8-18 thought cursive was important. Home schoolers liked packaged curriculums that included cursive instruction. Many experts argue in favor of cursive writing not only because it is faster but because it is stimulating and improves brain development, language and working memory. The fact is the world is not cursive free and its future still unknown. For now it still has its place in academia. It engages the brain and writing is faster than printing. We should focus on it early. Printing or cursive lays the groundwork for typing. The fact also is that not all schools are equipped with computers or have the facilities to accommodate them. Computer equipment is expensive and in fact still uses paper. We can’t always depend on them when we need to write something down. Michaela Cullington, a student, wrote a paper “Does Texting Affect Writing?” in 2010 for an English class. The paper is an examination of texting and the belief that it negative effective student’s writing. Cullington goes into detail about textspeak- “language created by these abbreviations”- and their use in formal writings. She organizes the paper in a way that is confusing to understand at first (pg. 1). At the end of the paper, she discusses her finding in her own research which comes to show that texting does not affect writing. It can also depend on how old the kid is, if he's younger it will probably be a lot more difficult compared to if he was older. However, handwriting is also outdated and lacks the agility of the keyboard (Korper). Nonetheless, some of these positive aspects of handwriting are largely due to the ‘drill’ factor emphasized in the Palmer Method of handwriting used present day (Korper).
There are also reasons that cursive should be taught. Studies show it broadens the brain and makes think more while writing in cursive. It also brings out more inner thoughts in the brain. Someday we will need cursive for car signature, loans, student loan, and a lot more things that require cursive. Studies also show that it activates different parts of the brain and shows fine motor skills towards kids.

Well who said you need to know cursive to hand write? There is something called fine print, and we use that everyday of our lives. You just don't need cursive anymore. That is why it should never be required.

People are telling them that they should get a cochlear implant. If you guys didn’t know what a cochlear implant is, it would be that you get to hear and talk like a normal human being. Half the deaf people don’t want to get a cochlear implant because it is really dangerous. I strongly believe that schools should teach sign language in schools. Yes there is school for the deaf and it is called Iowa School for the Deaf, but some people don’t want to go there and they just want to be around regular people and not get looked at funny or made fun of. Kids just want to live a normal life among other kids and have friends and not have to worry about looking at the interpreted while they are trying to do their work.
