Research Question: Does the field of accounting prefer women than men?
Why I chose this/Rationale for choosing this topic
The field of accounting is key to any organization as it assists the external and internal stakeholders to make informed decisions by giving them financial information. I am studying to become one of the professionals in the accounting field. The developments that are occurring in the field of accounting are critical to me. Currently, the issue of gender is very thorny in any organization, as some fields will be preferred to have either male or female when hiring for new recruits. Therefore, I am interested to better understand whether the field of accounting favor females as compared to male during the recruitment period.

The general percentage of women who are pursuing accounting in the world is estimated to be 50 percent. In the United States, women take a lion share in the field of accounting, whereby of all auditors and accountants, they hold a 63 percent (Bruce-Twun, 2013). In the United States, Canada and United Kingdom, the CICA, AICPA and ICAEW, they possess programs targeted at educating as well as supporting individuals and firms pertaining to the development of women in the profession. The efforts deal with sustainability of profession as being a foundational reason to promote the initiatives. Equal Pay for Women The Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963, which required employers to give equal pay for equal work to men and women working in the same workplace, and prohibited sex discrimination. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, women still earn on average only 77% of what men earn, but it is much worse for colored women (Simon). According to the White House, the pay gap between African American women and Latina women is larger. African American women are earning sixty four cents for every dollar earned by men and Latina women fifty six cents for every dollar, even though they work in the same workplace and same position (White house).
For many years in United States, equal salary pay for women has been a major issue that women have been fighting for decades. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions. (Rowen) Although, traditionally most women do not work to provide for there family and there are not so many independent women during World War II. After World War II more women lost their jobs to veterans returning to the workforce. Women in the workforce after the war have been discriminated ever since. Since the beginning of time, men and women have been separated. Men would always be the supporters of the family while women would care for their family. With this being true, they would have different jobs set for them. Even now this aspect of society still stands. Even though the women’s movement has happened and we claim that women are equal, we really are not. Sexism in our society is negatively affecting women in the workforce. Women are not represented equally in different jobs, they suffer harassment, a wage gap exists, and discrimination against them still has an effect and has done so since the beginning of history.
From the beginning of history and to this day women still get paid less than the average man, but why? Whoever said that women are incapable of good work performance? Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. These days women make up half the workplace in our society; they work just as hard and for the same reasons. Women deserve to be paid at an equal rate as men because they are relied on to uphold the same responsibilities and are just as qualified to perform at a man’s level.

An individual working as a public accountant can expect to work as an independent third party to a multitude of companies.
