Females have to dress like a man, act like a man, and be like a man; to get a “man’s” job.
Gender stereotypes constrain woman because there is a cultural belief that a woman has to be “masculine” to succeed in a man’s world. Women are expected to have jobs that do not require a lot of strength, as they are the “weak sex”. Then, even other women are as likely as men to show sexism towards women, most people would spend thousands of money on salaries just to have a male boss. Lastly, is it hard to get a good job as a woman, but if they do get it, they will not get the same benefits a man will.

care of their children while their husband worked and got the money to sustain them. Then, some women that were more independent would try and seek for a job. These women usually got jobs as nurses, assistants, cashiers and elementary school teachers, amongst others. In today’s world, there are more women who have good jobs, like judges, police officers, and others that were not seen in 1970. However, men have kept the majority of jobs as laborers, truck drivers, material movers, etc. Not that any woman really wants to work in that field, but it still is very stereotypical. In addition, both genders show sexism towards women when hiring someone, stating their salaries, and doing professional mentorship.
Studies have shown that both, men and women, would be willing to pay thousands of dollars in salary, just to have a male over a female boss. In order to succeed as a woman, they should be able to get at least the same positions a man gets. Other women should not be sexist against their same kind. Woman claim to want equality, but they have to start with themselves. If a woman chooses a man to be her boss, then of course a man will also choose another man to be the boss.
On the other hand, studies show that the number of women working has dramatically changed since 1970. These studies show that back then, the workforce was made up with 37.97 percent of women. Comparing this percentage to the studies made from 2006 to 2010, the presence of women in the workplace has increased at least 10 percent. In the 1970’s, it was really rare to see a woman working as an accountant; today, 60 percent of those accountants are women. Men usually get higher salaries than women, even if they are doing the exact same job. Men are more likely to get a raise or a higher position than a women. Also, in many stores, offices, even politics, the main heads are usually man. Stereotypical, or maybe not so much. Finally, up to this day, there is still that cultural belief that a woman has to be more “masculine” to succeed in a man’s world. From having different jobs that do not require much force, to being mistreated by other woman, and even getting the same job, but never the same benefits. They say our generation has changed, that women are finally equal, but are we?
The author explores some stereotypes based on what types of jobs are more women’s type of jobs or more manly jobs. Careers such as carpenters and truck drivers are all almost exclusively male jobs, whereas careers in nursing or secretary work are all almost exclusively a woman’s type of work. Since the 1970’s, women have made head way into male dominated jobs. However, the author states that even though women have made it into male dominated jobs, this is not true for the reverse situation. The woman type jobs are still almost exclusively women’s jobs with men making little entry into them.

An important idea in the book is that girls who exude leadership qualities are oftentimes called bossy, while boys who present the same qualities are praised. The first example given is that women are expected to quit working once they have children. Women sometimes are not selected for positions due to employers not wanting their training to go to waste. The second stereotype pertains to women being the primary caregivers in the family. This idea can also affect men in that they are not given the “flexibility that would allow them to help their wives.” Third on the list is women being “judged more harshly when voicing their opinions.” In this example, women that are confident in themselves can experience backlash from the public, such as being called inappropriate names and being viewed as someone is self-centered. Looking back on the jobs I’ve had they are often considered manly jobs in society which leads me into thinking about gender roles in our society. Gender roles are a set of behavioral norms assumed to accompany one’s status as a male or female (Conley 2017). Gender roles are very prevalent in determining one’s career. Gender roles are socially constructed so they are likely to be based off stereotypes. For example, a truck driving company may not hire a woman simply because women are stereotyped as bad drivers. In a study done by Lindsey Rice and Joan Barth they found that males were less likely to recommend the female applicant, particularly after stereotype-congruent priming. Meaning that simply a female applicant might be passed on just because of her gender. This then leads us into sexism. Sexism is when a person’s sex or gender is the basis for judgment or discrimination (Conley 2017). It occurs from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences. In 2006, the World Economic Forum introduced The Global Gender Gap Index. It is a framework that captures the magnitude and capacity of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress. The index measures national gender gaps on political, economic, education and health based criteria, and provides country rankings that allow for effective comparisons across regions and income groups, over time. Certainly, women at work today are not treated as equals with men, but there is an upward trend of progress being made. With pioneering and persistent women alongside lobbying women's groups, and forward thinking corporations, there is hope that one day gender won't matter at work.
When people are talking about CEO’s, Presidents or any other person in a high position, who comes to mind? For most people, the person that comes to mind is a white male. There is also a lack of promotion in high positions for qualified women in the work force. These are just a few of the work place inequalities that females are faced with. Even with the many steps taken to ensure equality in the work field, the gender discrimination continues to exist.
Sexism is a major factor in the workforce.Today male and female have a hard time breaking into the opposite gender dominated fields. This has happened because of the media, it has showed us that male have certain “right” jobs, as well as female. Female still dominate traditional female professions like cosmetology jobs are 92.9 percent women working them(Wolfe). If a man were to get into cosmetology they would most likely be judged for having that job, because we stereotype that they can't have a feminine job. Women have a harder time getting into high level positions. “Women make up only 21 of the S&P’s 500 CEOs,” (Berman). This has happened because the media has set in place stereotypes that it is wrong for women to have high level positions. It is getting better, in 2013 women chief financial officers increased 35 percent at large U.S. companies from 2012 (Frier and Hymowitz). The job market for men and women is still unfair but it is starting to get equal.
In American society, the woman has always been viewed in the traditional viewpoint of what role she should play in the home; that she is the homemaker or caretaker. Even when women break from the stereotypical role of "housewife" and join the workforce, they still are not given an equal opportunity at acquiring a job that is seen to be as advancing or of higher recognition, as they would like to have. Not only do women encounter unfairness in work pay, they also face a “glass ceiling” on a promotional basis. This glass ceiling is a “promotion barrier that prevents woman’s upward ability” (2). For example, if a woman is able to enter a job traditionally for men, she will still not receive the same pay or experience the same increase in occupational ability. Gender typing plays a huge role in the workplace. It is the idea that women tend to hold jobs that are low paid with low status. Women are not highly considered in leadership positions because of social construction of gender. Society has given women the role of “caretakers” and sensitive individuals. Therefore, women are not depicted as authoritative figures, which is apparent with the absence of women in leadership roles in companies. Furthermore, sex segregation leads to occupations with either the emphasis of women in a certain job or men in a certain job. In 2009, occupations with the highest proportion of women included “secretary, child care worker, hair dresser, cashier, bookkeeper, etc.” (3). Due to women earning rights, fighting hard for them and the change our society has taken, one that may take a while getting used to. It is hard to be equal with the man not only in the workplace but also in normal everyday life.
However, women have made optimistical progress towards equality and their role in the society has been changed dramatically since the last century. Many women stepped out of their home and start to work at factories and offices. The number of working women with children has more than doubled in the past 50 years. While working conditions for women may have improved, there is a lack of appreciation for the notion that work for most women doesn't end at the door of a factory or office. Despite an increase of women's participation in the labour force, women's share of housework has hardly changed in 50 years.
