82% of schools start earlier than the recommended time for starting. Schools for generations have been starting early, but now there is a push to start schools later. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that schools should start at 8:30 or later, but some schools don’t have the money to do it. Schools should start later because students will get more sleep, will improve their grades, and will reduce some risks.
One reason schools should start later, is that it will allow students to get more sleep. Justin O’Neil says in his article called “Should Schools Start Later?” “Teens need at least 8.5 hours of sleep each night.” Students have work, after school activities, and homework that keep them awake longer. They have to get up early to go to school, and they don’t get the 8.5 recommended hours. “The body’s circadian rhythm--that is, its natural sense of time--shifts during adolescence” (O’Neil). Students have a harder time going to bed early, because of this, it makes them exhausted at school. Their tardiness will also go down because they get more sleep, and won’t try to push it to get to school on time. Students will be more rested if schools start later.

Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before. Also students will be up later finishing homework and socializing on their phones with friends. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. However, this issue can be resolved by making practices for sports and club meetings shorter and more frequent to accommodate the schedule variation. There is multiple facts and reasons to have later start times help students get through the school day. BY helping students get better grades, test scores, and overall better. And teens these days aren't getting the sleep they need to wake up early and go to school. SO that is why school should have later start times. IF schools started later we wouldn't have all these tired and groggy students coming to school we would have students that are refreshed and ready to learn. We will have students that have good grades. We will have students who have better test scores. One of the benefits of later school start times is improved student performance. In a study conducted by researchers from the University of Minnesota, it was found that over eight hours of sleep each night boosted test scores, attendance, and overall academic achievement (Long). With a later start time, students would be able to get a better night's sleep, and would be overall more alert (Morin). If students in school are more alert, they will be able to pay more attention to teachers.

If the school board decided to start the day later, the students would be healthier and more attentive which will improve their academic performance. A survey shows that the average time people go to sleep is around 10:30 pm to 12:00 am (Gregoire). Since students sleep in class, they are not learning. This lowers their grades and their knowledge. Dr. Judith Owens, who is the director of the Sleep Medicine Clinic at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., says "adolescents are programmed to fall asleep later,” (2013). She wants to change school start times to later because "we are asking [teens] to be awake and alert at the time in their 24-hour clock when their alertness level is at its very lowest,” (2013). She also says that most teens can’t usually fall asleep until 11 p.m. Sleep expert Amy Wolfson of College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., says that children should try to get eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep a night. Waking up at six a.m. leads to bad sleep patterns creating sleep deprivation.
