Students on average who stay up past 1am every night start developing psychological and mental health problems. According to Tori Rodriguez, a psychotherapist, when teens don't get the amount of sleep they need it damages the
Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help boost academic averages among students, and isn’t th...
According to the National Sleep Foundation, biological sleep patterns change throughout the stages of adolescence. ¨Biological sleep patterns shift toward later times for both sleeping and waking during adolescence-meaning it is natural to not be able to fall asleep before 11:00pm.¨ (¨Teens and Sleep¨). Messing with these sleep cycles in the long run and lead to sleep disorders. Research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests teenagers 13-18 years old should regularly sleep 8-10 hours each night for a healthy sleep. The teens who do not get a good amount of sleep are more likely to suffer from mental conditions, smoking, illicit drugs, and alcohol use. ¨Not getting enough sleep is common among high school students and is associated with several health risks including being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and using drugs, as well as poor academic performance.¨ (¨Schools Start Too Early¨). On an NBC news story, Hilton Head Island High School moved its start time and benefits were noticeable. Students had higher test score averages and grades improved throughout the school.A study done in 2008 published in the journal of clinical sleep, found car accident rates fell by 16.5% when students were more aware on the road, not having to wake up before 7 am.
In the two articles, “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” by Michelle Trudeau and “High Schools Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here’s why” by Dan Weissman. Each author uses different evidence to support his or her claim about school starting times. According to “High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens”, most teenagers are not getting the proper rest at night and is causing a severe consequence to their everyday experiences. Students need sleep because it can prevent a child from falling asleep in class and helping the child focus. “students reported less depression when there was a later starting time.”
Researchers have proven that teenager’s brains don’t start working until ten in the morning, also that an average teenager is supposed to get eight to nine hours of sleep each night. These are a few reasons that school starting times are negatively affecting students learning abilities at school. I believe that schools should have later starting times. An average teenager is supposed to get eight to nine hours of sleep each night, however in reality most teens only get about seven hours. A lack of sleep is causing students to do worse on homework and tests. Our school starts at seven twenty-five, if it started two hours later, then students would be getting the exact amount of sleep that they need each night. A study shows that the brain doesn’t
Schools should not start later because that would cause a lot of problems. Schools should stay how they are because it will make kids stop being on there phones at night so much, it won’t make school end later (and make kids walk home in the dark), and it interfere with sports or jobs.
But others think otherwise about this topic, those who think that the school day should start bright and early think that it should stay that way. Many who think from this perspective is because of how it will interrupt the daily schedule of a student. Coming back to Lisa L. Lewis article, “Why school should start later in the day”, Lewis also inspect the other side of this conflict explaining why the school day should be starting bright and early,“Another potential problem schools commonly raise is that later start times would lead to kids missing classes at the end of the day in order to attend sporting events, or that athletic participation rates would decline”(Lewis 3). When there are such events that start at this time students may have
Sleep deprivation for students in school can affect mood, health, ability to pay attention, deal with stress, and retain information, but that's not even everything that is affected. Students are not getting enough sleep to sustain them. As a result of waking up too early for school, students do not function properly. Due to students being tired in the morning, they would learn more in classrooms if school started later.
If teenagers don't get enough sleep that can start to become a safety hazard mentally and physically. There have been many students in situations where school can become to difficult and if you're not getting enough sleep that obviously doesn't help. Students in these kind of dilemmas can be to over whelming so people can make very intense situations such as drugs, bad hobbies, and sometimes committing suicide. Too much pressure can be way too much power especially for a student in high school or middle school because they are so young. This can be a very
Are you tired of waking up so early in the morning? Daryn doesn't get tired until 11:00. He then has basketball practice at 6:15. That means he only gets about 6 hours of sleep because he has to wake up at 5:30. After basketball he's tired, then he has to go to school and most likely falls asleep in school because he's so weary from such a busy, miniscule morning. Schools should start later in the morning because it gives the child more sleep so they won't be tired, gives them a more productive morning and benefits their education.
High school classes should begin later in the day an end later in the day to accommodate students' natural sleep clocks. Class should start later, Look at how students react in the morning when teachers try to teach there first class at seven in the morning. Having class later will also help kids stay up and not go to sleep in class. First you never know what A student had to do the night before. One time i was doing a project and it was due the next day I stay up all night doing the project. the time i got done with it was four o'clock in the morning, and schools starts at seven there is no way any person can go off of two and a half hours of sleep and expect to be there and be 100 percent active. Therefore, Students do not work
We’ve all woken up tired not wanting to go to school, because we didn’t get enough sleep. Of course when I say we, I mean as in teens who go to school, and possibly yourself when at the time in your life. The schedule for school doesn’t fit in very well with our sleep patterns. Sleep experts from the University of Minnesota, have found that later start times made students have a better health measure and over perform better in school (Hoofman 2). Research being done on this topic mostly specifies that bodies don’t agree with the start time, for various reasons. School start times should be pushed back an hour to benefit teens health, and school performance.
...of sleep for a while can lead some to have a horrible outlook on life and cause them to look at everything pessimistically. In the article Backgrounder: Later School Start Times, for the National Sleep Foundation, Mary Carskadon states "Given that the primary focus of education is to maximize human potential, then a new task is before us to ensure that the conditions in which learning take place address the very biology of our learners." Carskadon is absolutely correct. School is designed for students to become the best that they can be and at this time they are unable to do that due to early school start times. High school students need the extra sleep time to be able to build themselves into who they want to be. Therefore, school districts in America need to rethink their school hours and realize that many of them are not doing what is best for today's students.
Have you ever felt burned or drained while in class? Many students have said that they feel physically or mentally drained out from having to wake up so early for school and sit in a classroom for long periods of time. Others have stated that they enjoy the schedule and don’t believe that there should be any changes. Here are some reasons why schools shouldn't start later and what time they should actually start.
Abbey Lewis Mrs. Zimmerman English 10 04 March 2024 It’s Too Early It’s not fun getting up early is it? Teenagers don't get nearly enough sleep because of how early they have to get up for school, getting up at 6am so they can get ready on time to drowsily drive to school (which most of the time kids just skip the first few periods to get an extra hour of sleep). Making attendance and grades worse, an easy way to fix these issues is schools making the start time later.
