Do you think school should start later? 90% of high schoolers would say yes to school starting later. The other 10% is probably still asleep. Most students in the morning are usually still half asleep walking around like they just rose from the dead while there are those who look like they chugged a gallon of red bull. For years science people have tried to find out why adults are so dead in the morning. It took forever for them to figure out how it works with teenagers. Scientist say that we all have some kind of internal clock in our brains that helps us keep track of time and has a kind of schedule for our body for certain stuff. Like when it’s bedtime it will slow down your heartbeat, to calm you not kill you. Some peoples internal clock
is beyond messed up. Sometimes it will kick in very early, like around 8pm and will rise again at 5am. Sometimes it won’t kick in till 2am, like mine (-_-) and won’t rise till 10am. There's also the melatonin levels in your body. Melatonin is that chemical in your body that helps you feel sleepy. Melatonin is supposed to kick in at night and drop down in the morning. Sometimes it’s a little late Over time your internal clock slows down. When your a little kid you wake up before your parents and annoy them till they wake up. As a teenager your parents are literally trying every legal way possible to wake you up in the morning. It’s because there is a delay in our internal clock and melatonin. So technically parents, it’s not your teenagers fault they have a hard time getting up in the morning. It’s not because they are a lazy a**, not because they are up all night on their phones(though that doesn’t help) it’s because of the delay in melatonin and the internal clock We can force teens to get up early but it is very hard for high schoolers to learn when they are dead tired. It would be better if we started school later. At least an extra hour would be great so teenagers can get a little extra rest.
Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help boost academic averages among students, and isn’t th...
The first reason why school should start later is because teens need sleep. Most teens don’t or can’t go to sleep to get the needed amount of sleep, so they are more rushed in the morning and stressed throughout the day. According to the national sleep foundation, “59% of sixth graders and 87% of high schoolers aren’t getting the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night. If school started later, they could get the sleep they need and they wouldn’t be as stressed or tired.

Schools starting Earlier in the day make it easier for students to get to school and be able to do after school activities and their coaches not worrying that they aren’t going to beat the sun for daylight. People say that if school started later that students wouldn’t be tired at school that is false because since students would have to wake up later they would go to sleep later at night making them tired in the morning
Ring! Ring! Goes my alarm clock I wake up at 5:00 in the morning for the first day of school. And I think about how school should start much later so teens can get more sleep. Harrington and the video "Should Students Start School Later in the Morning? as well as a info graphic by Sarah McKinney titled wake up call all support that schools should let their students get more sleep. But others think otherwise about this topic, those who think that the school day should start bright and early think that it should stay that way. Many who think from this perspective is because of how it will interrupt the daily schedule of a student. Coming back to Lisa L. Lewis article, “Why school should start later in the day”, Lewis also inspect the other side of this conflict explaining why the school day should be starting bright and early,“Another potential problem schools commonly raise is that later start times would lead to kids missing classes at the end of the day in order to attend sporting events, or that athletic participation rates would decline”(Lewis 3). When there are such events that start at this time students may have
Have you ever felt so tired in the middle of class? A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that 70% percent of teens aren't getting enough sleep. High school classes should begin later in the day an end later in the day to accommodate students' natural sleep clocks. Class should start later, Look at how students react in the morning when teachers try to teach there first class at seven in the morning. Having class later will also help kids stay up and not go to sleep in class. First you never know what A student had to do the night before. One time i was doing a project and it was due the next day I stay up all night doing the project. the time i got done with it was four o'clock in the morning, and schools starts at seven there is no way any person can go off of two and a half hours of sleep and expect to be there and be 100 percent active. Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
Abbey Lewis Mrs. Zimmerman English 10 04 March 2024 It’s Too Early It’s not fun getting up early is it? Teenagers don't get nearly enough sleep because of how early they have to get up for school, getting up at 6am so they can get ready on time to drowsily drive to school (which most of the time kids just skip the first few periods to get an extra hour of sleep). Making attendance and grades worse, an easy way to fix these issues is schools making the start time later.
