We go to different places for many different reason. They range from work to vacation. Same thing with people back then. Before the Brooklyn Bridge was built, in order to get from Brooklyn to manhattan or vice versa you would have to take a boat. That is a lot of work in order to get the groceries to your house. This was one of the main reason for why the Brooklyn bridge was so important. Another reason is, “Its granite towers and steel cables have offered safe passage to millions of [people]”(). Taking a boat can be dangerous, more dangerous than walking and this bridge allowed people to do that. Manhattan was very crowded for a long time and the Brooklyn Bridge was help full with fixing that. “It was a solution to a overcrowded manhattan”().By
Construction of The Peace Bridge in Buffalo New York What can construction do for an area? The construction of an office building may bring in a firm, corporation, or company. The construction of a sporting arena may keep a team where it currently is, or bring a new team to that area. For example, the construction of the HSBC Arena kept the Sabres in Buffalo. The construction of a casino may bring in tourists, or people who live in the outlying suburbs.
At first the Spanish Harlem or also called “El Barrio”. An unsafe neighborhood with social issues that remains up to day as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in New York where the story for the movie begin (Nelson). Later, we can observe the famous subway of the city of New York, that is one of the most used mass transportation in the world operating in a 24/7 basis with 34 lines and 469 stations around the five boroughs(Itzkowitz). And lastly, the Grand Central Station is captured in the film, which is one of the busiest train stations in the world serving every day around 200,000 commuters (NYC Tourist)
Staten Island is a part of New York as well. Since it was dispatched from the main New York City, in the 1950s there were only 3% of the entire New York City population living there. Even though it occupies 16% of New York City’s land mass, there was little people in Staten Island relative to the mainland city. Furthermore, there was no link to the mainland resulting in a lack of urban development in the island as transportation facilities are weak and not efficient. Therefore it served as a residential suburb. In 1964 a direct surface link was introduced in the form of the Verrazano- Narrows Bridge. Approximated travel time from Staten Island to the Mayor’s Office became 30 minutes. Since travel time
New York City has gained the reputation as one of the most intriguing cities in the world. The city is the largest multicultural city in the globe and is admired by both its elegant and unique architecture styles. Unlike many other cosmopolitan cities, New York is home to not just one but multiple national landmarks. One of these various landmarks is, the Grand Central Terminal. The terminal also known to many people as Grand Central Station. Many are able to recognize the station since it can be seen in many movies and television shows; however, for many years the terminal was known to New York as a mass transportation hub. Unfortunately, thirty years later, developers planned to demolish
In ceramics, I mess around with my friends but still get my work done at the same time and have fun doing it. 9-11 has definitely taught my parents that no matter how safe you think you are that anything can happen at anytime so you have to always be cautious. My parents moved to UA 23 years ago from Grandview. They wanted to move here because they knew they wanted to have a family, UA had great school systems, and it is very safe. My parents have molded me into the person I am today. They have taught me the right and wrong things to do in life, how to be kind to everybody, and how it is important to be loyal to friends and family. They have told me to always keep strong relationships with your family because in the end they're all you'll have.
After the American Revolution, New York became a part of the United States and the city expanded rapidly. Back then, before cars and subways existed, people had to live close to their work place. The Lower East Side became very crowded with working men and women who had families. In 1833, architects realized that they could make a good deal of money by building small, cheep dwelling for families. Soon after, the first tenement was built on Water Street in October, 1833. It was four stories high and was called a “single decker” meaning one apartment per floor. Within a few years, tenements had taken the place of one-family homes in the neighborhood....
Whyte have to evaluate the High Line then as he has dedicated to documenting the progress of newly planned urban spaces, he received a grant to study the street life of New York City. Whyte believed in the resolution of public spaces. He also believed that the social life in public spaces contributes a vital role to the quality of life of individuals and society as a whole. We should have ethical bonds to create physical places that helps public engagement and community interaction. For him, small urban places are “priceless,” and the city street is “the river of life…where we come together.” So the High Line would be a great urban place which is also connected with the Manhattan city so there are chances for the community to be
I will study how the High Line changed New York from being a busy vehicle city to be an attractive walking city. Focusing on again the advantages of it, how it enhances the city of New York and how it gives New York the title of a Walking City. Although different to the other two as the High Line is purely recreational. When people first think of New York they think of the busy roads, the traffic, the loud noise of cars beeping their horns and they think of the yellow taxis driving around the city, hence once giving New York the title of a vehicle city. But when I think of New York I think of it as a Walking City mainly down to the opening of the New York High Line in 2009. The High Line is purely for pedestrians no vehicles allowed, setting out that this piece of architecture was going to change this city’s title for the better. The High Line before was a piece of obsolete industrial infrastructure in a part of Manhattan that was forsaken. It was built for the sole reason that so many accidents were happen due to trains and the street traffic colliding on 10th avenue. In 1934 lines opened for use, but not long after in the 1950’s the growth of the interstate lead to a drop in rail travel. The High Line became derelict out of use, architects saw it as a ruin sitting there since 1980. But when Ricardo Scofido took it over the change started to happen, the High Line was going to change New York’s
One important reason they shouldn’t build trump’s wall is because they’ll eventually run out of resources. According to “https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2017-trump-mexico-wall/” trump will need a lot of resources because it will be about 2,000 miles long. They'll need to pay other countries so they can get more resources for the wall. They will also waste money, for the tools that they'll need to build with.
In 1872, Charles Crocker, a railroad entrepreneur, called for a bridge that connected the Golden Gate Strait. The strait, approximately 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, is the entrance to San Francisco Bay, which is in California, from the Pacific Ocean. By 1916, Michael M. O'Shaughnessy, a San Francisco City Engineer, was asked by city officials to see if it was possible to build a bridge that crossed the strait. While most engineers claimed that a bridge was not able to be built and that it would cost about $100 million, Joseph Baermann Strauss claimed that a bridge would be easily built and would only cost about $25 to $30 million. After the long process of having the bridge design approved for constructing, on January 5, 1933, the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge had begun (“Golden Gate Bridge Research Library”). The main constructors included Joseph Baermann Strauss, Irving Morrow and Charles Ellis. Strauss had hired Irving Morrow to design small features for the bridge like pedestrian walkways and streetlamps. Morrow also made the bridge look luxurious by using a style called art deco (“Irving Morrow” and “Art Deco”). Since Morrow was to design the Bridge, he knew that it would play a significant role on its display in regards to its surroundings. As of today, “the color blends perfectly with the changing season tints of the spans’ natural setting against the San Francisco skyline and the Marin hills” (“Golden Gate Bridge Research Library”). Meanwhile, Charles Ellis was the engineering expert. He was later accused by Strauss of wasting money and time by working on equations of forces at the Golden Gate Bridge. Ellis was then told not to go back to construct the bridge. Ellis could not drop out of the project because he w...
It’s so full of artistic ferment, it’s a tremendous asset to the city. It’s one of the most interesting places to live in New York, and the park’s a nerve center. Gem Spa on Second Avenue is another. St Mark’s Place.“ Gem Spa didn’t stand out to me when I first saw it. It was just another newsstand with cheap sunglasses and pipes out front. It didn’t become special until after I googled Saint Mark’s Place and was informed of its illustrious history. I always stare at Gem Spa’s bright yellow awning while I wait to cross the street. It looks perfectly ordinary, nothing about it screaming ”never center of New York City.“ I guess its regular-ness is what made a nerve center. It was a nerve center in the same way Gotham Pizza was one to the NYU dorms that surrounded
People who redeveloping Times Square find Times Square had become a better place because they think they helped with the economy. They also cleaned up people who make the street sleazy, such as the hookers and junkies. Plus, they think that they helped to reduce tawdry and any illegal street activities that they think as threatening, as they have the
The Big Apple has the world’s largest subway system, with hundreds of stations that are spread across the five boroughs. The subway is one of the cheapest forms of transportation and lets riders pay one price and get off when they please. Buses in the city also work the same way as the subway. In addition to many forms of public transportation, many choose to take on the city by foot. “New York is the most walkable large city in the US with 8,175,133 residents” (New York Neighborhoods on Walk Score). New York City’s grid like streets make it very easy to navigate around the city. Being able to walk to their destination instead of taking a form of public transportation saves an individual a great deal of money over time. For example, if someone were to take a taxi from Madison Square Garden to Times Square, they would end up paying around $10.55 to go 0.9 miles. Taxis charge $2.50 for an initial fare, $0.50 for every four blocks travelled, $0.50 for every minute idle, surcharges and then a tip on top of that. Even though taxis can be considered expensive, people can avoid this completely by walking, making NYC very accessible and
The frequency of inspection is referred in terms of its purposes in the context of maintenance management system. In this regard, a series of different frequency of bridge inspection has to be carried out to identify the annual work programs. The work programs are Inventory, Routine Condition, Confirmatory and Detailed Inspection.
One common reason why people love/visit New York City is transportation. An example of this would be a taxi. Taxis are a great source of transportation because it can take you places, but you have to pay. Also, another example of transportation is the subway. The subway can take you to other parts of New York fast. The subway can be dangerous if you get lost or get off at the wrong station. The bus is also a good way of transportation. Many people take the bus if they don’t have a car. New York City has many types of transportation that
