While completing my undergraduate class work, I was under the illusion I could graduate with my degree in biology and find a biology teaching position my first year teaching. This did not become a reality for me simply because a large amount of other qualified biology education majors had the exact same plan. Teaching 7th and 8th grade science was not my first choice for a teaching position until I started teaching at Dixon Middle School.
After teaching for three years at Dixon Middle School I found I have a passion for teaching middle school students. To successfully teach both 7th and 8th grade science you need to have background knowledge in chemistry, ecology, physics, cellular biology, anatomy, physiology, genetics, evolution, classification, and geology. While I feel very confident in teaching biological related standards, I would like to improve my level of understanding in physics, geology and chemistry.
After researching several graduate programs I became very excited after reading about the University of Utah’s MSSST program. Physics, geology and chemistry are three areas I would like to strengthen. I feel this program is what I am looking for to help improve the quality of teaching within my classroom, and increasing my personal level of understanding in physics, chemistry and geology. My short and long term goals I intend to accomplish in the MSSST program include the following:

I contemplated attending graduate school for School Psychology or Educational Administration after completing my undergraduate degree, but I feel that classroom teaching experience will be absolutely vital for success in any career in education. I believe that classroom experience will provide me the exposure and knowledge that will allow me to not only become a professional and successful teacher, but also help to solidify the path I should take for my own education. As a person who enjoys continually learning and growing, I can see myself using the understanding I gained from working in the classroom to shape my future educational goals. By researching more in depth about these two career paths, I learned that if I want to become a biology high school teacher then I must be fully committed, dedicated, and motivated to teach the students in the classroom because teaching is a big responsibility that a majority of teachers overlook before stepping into the field of education. Any kind of teaching takes someone who is willing to make an impact on their students’ life by leading them to their full potential and giving them the most out of their education.
When I attend Arizona State University, I plan to acquire a degree in applied biological sciences with a secondary in teaching. Then, I hope to become a teacher at the high school level in order to help further the knowledge of the students. To move towards my goal, I am not only enrolled in many science-centered classes, but I am also working to perfect my public speaking. It is an integral part of teaching to be able to stand in front of students and lecture, and that can only be done with expert syntax and diction. In the future, I see myself as a teacher who makes a difference not only in the education of students, but also as a leader for the students to look up to and relate to.
By using the S.M.A.R.T. goal system, you are able to make your dreams a reality, one small step at a time. The first step in reaching a long-term goal is to understand the S.M.A.R.T. the goal process. Simply using the words specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound can be a bit confusing. After a bit of research, I was able to better define the method. Using a S.M.A.R.T. I’m a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College this is my first semester as a college student. I plan to go to college for four years and only be at TC3 for this one semester, then transfer to a four year school. College has grown around the world more than ever and more people are attending college more than ever. I have chosen to go to college because of the rewards after graduation. Yes it is another four years of school but by getting more education and an extended degree gives me more opportunities for better jobs and more money. The career I have chosen to study is business administration. I am hoping that it takes me to a great job managing a company or possibly being an accountant.
Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.

As the time approached, my attitude toward student-teaching was one of confidence and in some ways overconfidence. I believed that I was equipped with all of the tools necessary to be a superior teacher. Little did I know what truly goes on behind the scenes of a teacher. Between grading papers, attending meetings, and preparing lessons, I would often feel overwhelmed. Still, student teaching would prove to be much more valuable than I anticipated. It would teach me to appreciate the wisdom of mentors and experienced teachers, value or being organized and prepared, and lastly the resilience of students.
... After graduating with my Bachelors of Science in Education, I plan to get a job as a teacher in an elementary school. I believe that there is a need for compassionate and caring teachers in elementary schools. At such a young age, I believe that it is important for elementary students to have positive role models in their lives.
With a Biology degree, many opportunities are opened up from many companies. Once I graduate from Iowa State and I am, unfortunately, declined admission to Veterinarian School, I would pursue a career in research in a laboratory setting. For me to accomplish this goal, I would have to complete courses that focus on genetics and are accompanied by a lab, such as Biology 211 and 211L. After four years and extensive course work, I would graduate with a degree in Microbiology and many opportunities in my field of study. After graduation, I will be pursuing a career in microbiology and will searching for jobs from a variety of companies. In the United States, there are many companies that hire a students with a degree in microbiology, from government programs (Department of Defense) or privately funded companies.
As an undergraduate biomedical scientist at the federal university of my state, one of my greatest desires is to achieve all my academic goals and graduate with excellence in the career that I have chosen to follow. Since the beginning, I always have conducted my studies aiming to reach a high quality pattern as a student, enrolled in all academic experience that university could offer, including extracurricular activities and internship opportunities. Now, as a senior student, all my principal goals remains the same but much more focused on pursuing an academic career and trace new ambitions for my professional life as a scientific researcher. I have not always wanted to be a teacher. I always knew that I wanted to work with children in some way, but I was pretty sure that teaching was not for me. I was well on my way in my junior year of college working toward a biology degree so that I could become a pediatric physician’s assistant. I still cannot explain what happened, but one week I was a biology major, and the next I knew that I have always been meant to teach children. I suppose I just took the longer route to get there than most people do. Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years.
