As I sit here and write my personal statement, I think back to when I was an elementary school student. My favorite part of being in elementary school was the feeling I got every September when it was time to go back to school. I loved every part of that feeling. The sadness of summer being over, but also the excitement of being back in school. The part I remember most was those “all about me” worksheets that teachers give out in order to learn more about their students. Each year I grew older most of my answers to those questions changed. My answer would always be a teacher. The importance of education was always instilled in me from a young age. I loved to learn new things and to challenge myself to grasp difficult concepts. Thinking about my life now as a third year elementary school teacher in Brooklyn, NY, I couldn’t be more pleased. As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. Becoming a teacher was not something I always knew I wanted. As I approached an age where I really started considering what I would like to do for a career I only knew that I did not want to work in an office behind a desk all day. I wanted a job that would be interactive, challenging and exciting. I also knew I wanted a job that would be important and would somehow contribute to the world in an important way. I thought being a teacher; particularly a teacher in the primary levels would fulfill those hopes and goals assuming I dedicate myself to becoming an effective teacher who has a positive influence on the lives of my students.
Through my own experiences, and as enforced by others' opinions in the profession, I have found that teaching is one of the most rewarding careers. Not only are you placed in the position of instructing and guiding children and young adults through the life long learning process, but you are able to give back to the schools and communities which have supported your early education and experiences that opened you up to a bright future. In becoming an educator, I hope to someday share the knowledge and lend the helping, supportive hand that I was once given, allowing students to formulate their own perspectives of the multicultural society and world around them. Teaching is a career I have been interested in pursuing throughout high school, and as my experiences and study in the field expands, I feel that my desire to teach will grow stronger and develop more soundly.

I have not always wanted to be a teacher. I always knew that I wanted to work with children in some way, but I was pretty sure that teaching was not for me. I was well on my way in my junior year of college working toward a biology degree so that I could become a pediatric physician’s assistant. I still cannot explain what happened, but one week I was a biology major, and the next I knew that I have always been meant to teach children. I suppose I just took the longer route to get there than most people do. The two main reasons that I have chosen to become a teacher is that I believe that teaching is extremely personally rewarding in many ways and the fact that I can actively make a difference in someone’s life.
I wake up every morning imagining myself leaving for a job teaching special education. Early childhood education is my passion and to be able to facilitate the personal acquisition of skills and knowledge of every individual student in my care one day would be an honor. Still, I know that I can’t achieve my dream of helping young and challenged students learn, grow, and thrive until I learn more myself. My intention, then, is simple: I want to enroll in CITE’s Early Childhood and Special Education Master’s program so that every day that I wake up envisioning my ideal future career, I can get to work laying its foundation.
After I complete my PhD, my eventual goal is to become a professor in my state in a university where I can perform learning methods and teaching. While education has quickly become my main goal, my teaching and leadership experience have influenced me that I am appropriate to a career as an educator. I think that I will highly contribute to the system education in my country which can provide a core understanding of my teaching abilities. I am conscious of the hard work and perseverance necessary for education and I know that it is not always as exciting as the results seem to indicate. However, I am sure that
I have never questioned what I wanted to be when I grow up. From the time as a small child I knew that I wanted to teach. Even at the end of many long school days, I would come home and play school with the neighborhood children. I had such a desire to help others learn and took pleasure in doing so. Still, to this present day I am teaching and helping others. Presently, I coach seventh and eighth grade girls’ basketball. I am constantly teaching different methods and strategies to help enhance each individual’s game. From my previous experiences I know education is the field that I wish to pursue.
There have been many factors that have inspired me to this career choice. Watching my teachers, both past and present, has inspired me to become a teacher. I have a genuine interest in lifelong learning and as such I have the desire to not only instil knowledge and values to others, but also encourage them to share my passion for learning. Social Justice and leadership roles at school, along with my extra-curricular involvement with Cowra Youth Council, have highlighted my ability to work with and for the benefit of young people. In essence I know that my abilities and aspirations will make me a good teacher.
A teacher is not what I have always wanted to be. As a matter of fact, it wasn't until I had taken several of my general studies classes that I made a commitment to teach. Having played football through middle school and high school, I just assumed that whatever I did would have to be related to football. It was, however, during a time of reflection that I thought about a former football coach and the rapport that he had with me and other players. He wanted to bring out the best in each of us. It was then that I realized that I wanted to do the same.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I also want to become a teacher because I would like to give back to the amazing teachers that I have this year and take what they have taught me and instill that in my future classroom. I realize that teaching is a lot of hard work, but I am willing to give one hundred percent effort on a daily basis so that students can receive a great education that they deserve.
