As I sit here and write my personal statement, I think back to when I was an elementary school student. My favorite part of being in elementary school was the feeling I got every September when it was time to go back to school. I loved every part of that feeling. The sadness of summer being over, but also the excitement of being back in school. The part I remember most was those “all about me” worksheets that teachers give out in order to learn more about their students. Each year I grew older most of my answers to those questions changed. However, there was one answer that always remained the same. One answer that shaped the course of my life. My answer would always be a teacher. The importance of education was always instilled in me from a young age. I loved to learn new things and to challenge myself to grasp difficult concepts. Thinking about my life now as a third year elementary school teacher in Brooklyn, NY, I couldn’t be more pleased. It is extremely gratifying to know that each day that I step foot into my classroom, I am preparing my scholars to have endless opportunities in their future by giving them a high quality education. Teaching is more than just a career for me, it’s my passion. It is truly heartwarming knowing that I play a major role in helping my students learn foundational skills that will lead them to become successful in life. I said I wanted to become a teacher all those years ago, which is why I worked hard to graduate magna cum laude from Virginia State University and receive my professional teaching certification.
