I became what I am today at the age of sixteen on a cloudy and cold Autumn morning in 2014. It was my sophomore year of high school and the first marking period was coming to a close. Like most students, I logged onto genesis when I had the chance and checked my grades. Everything seemed fine until I checked my AP US History grade. I had a B- in the course which was nowhere near what I had expected. I held myself to the expectation of getting at least an A- in every course and I wasn’t even close to that in history; something had to change.
The simple solution to this dilemma would be to study harder. However, I already studied multiple hours each week for history and I still was not able to get an A-. Meanwhile, in other courses, such as math, where I did negligible studying, I was getting A’s. I realized that the problem wasn’t in my studying habits, it was in my system of expectations. Expecting to get an A- or better in everything was completely flawed. The same amount of effort in different courses yielded different grades. I was fine with the fact that I would not reach my original goal of an A-. It was an advanced placement course, and I’m not a great history student. So, I just accepted that if I worked hard and got a B it would be something to be proud of and respect. After all, the history course would be over after the school year and I would never have to deal with it or its concepts again. While my target grade for history went down, my target grade for courses where I am instinctively talented such as math and science went up.
