I became what I am today at the age of sixteen on a cloudy and cold Autumn morning in 2014. It was my sophomore year of high school and the first marking period was coming to a close. Like most students, I logged onto genesis when I had the chance and checked my grades. Everything seemed fine until I checked my AP US History grade. I had a B- in the course which was nowhere near what I had expected. I held myself to the expectation of getting at least an A- in every course and I wasn’t even close to that in history; something had to change.
The simple solution to this dilemma would be to study harder. However, I already studied multiple hours each week for history and I still was not able to get an A-. Meanwhile, in other courses, such as math, where I did negligible studying, I was getting A’s. I realized that the problem wasn’t in my studying habits, it was in my system of expectations. Expecting to get an A- or better in everything was completely flawed. The same amount of effort in different courses yielded different grades. Due to these discrepancies, I made target grades for each class. They would be unique for every course and I based my target grades on two factors: rigour of the course, and my natural talent in the area

I was fine with the fact that I would not reach my original goal of an A-. It was an advanced placement course, and I’m not a great history student. So, I just accepted that if I worked hard and got a B it would be something to be proud of and respect. In other subjects I used to get 90+ but chemistry was one subject where I used to get in 70’s, despite getting less in chemistry, my teacher believed in me because she knew that there was no problem with me in understanding the concepts, rather it was because I can’t memorize a thousand equations in my mind at a time. During my early education, meaning elementary school and middle school, I was a very average student. I gave an average amount of effort to my grades, and I received above average results. This did not bother me, until the end of my 8th-grade year. At this point in the year, I was filling out what classes I desired to take the following year, my freshman year. I realized that from this point forward, I had to take my education much more serious, in order to get accepted to whichever college I desired. therefore, when planning my classes, I decided to challenge myself more than I ever have in the past, and take multiple honors courses. I assumed because of my grades, that I had what it took to be an honors-level student, but I was very wrong. One teacher, Mrs. Johnson, made me realize the kind of effort, time and energy needed to be devoted to my education.
Do your best to be successful. Even if you don't get all A's or don't have those excellent grades you used to have, it's okay. I was taking AP World History, my first AP class. Keeping up my grades in the class was one of my biggest concerns, but surprisingly, it turned out to be a relatively laid-back class without much homework. During high school, I did not have to study as hard as I do now that I am in college. Usually, I would be able to study the day before the test and score a hundred percent. Although, occasionally, I would be able to skip a few classes and get the notes from a classmate or of course, resort to guessing. However, now that I am in college, the lectures require much more attentiveness and are more complex: composing more information, meaning that one has to proportion time more responsibly and take an advantage of good study habits. My learning skills have made a complete transformation since I have been in college. I learned new things and I actually enjoy learning new things. Nevertheless, these changes required a lot of self control and practice. Going through these experiences have changed my entire persona about learning such as study habits, being more attentive during classes, and going through greater extents to succeed in certain classes.
I seem to learn better when I constantly read over the material I am studying. This allows the material to constantly be running in my mind. I am a person who will read or hear something and it usually sticks with me. Living up to my resolution, I joined several clubs, both in and out of school and academic and recreational. I also met some of my very best friends in high school. Achieving all of this, friends, memberships to academic clubs and good grades, made up my first successful experience in high school. I was driven by the years in middle school and the promise that I made to myself at the end of eighth grade. Throughout my under classmen years I exceled in all subjects and thoroughly enjoyed the clubs I had joined. Having bad study habits can really show up in your grades, but if you change your study habits your grades will improve. Many important things factor in understanding about studying. The most important fact about studying: no two people think alike; therefore, no two people study the same. What works for you may not work for your friend, and vice versa. I know I have no class that I enjoy so much that I cannot wait to get home so that I can study it, on that note we can only wish. As people we are all different for some students studying and being motivated to learn comes naturally but for me not so much. Success in high school and college really depend on good study habits. Things like taking bad notes, not knowing how to study, not knowing when to study and not having a good place to study can really affect your grades.
