The list of IB traits involve terms that a successful student should learn to adapt throughout their school years. Traits such as caring, risk-taker, open-minded, and balanced relate more to one’s personal life than traits like knowledgeable, thinker, reflective, principled, inquirer, and communicator which are more focused on the academic portion of one’s life. Although not everyone will begin the program with all these traits in their pocket, all students should grow and adapt towards new possibilities and a new personality than originally.

The trait I believe I reflect most is caring. I am always available when my friends, or even strangers, need help. I hope that I am a good person for someone to talk to as I am open-minded enough to never judge someone for their misfortunes or wrong doings. This brings me to the other trait I relate to most, which is open-minded. I believe that I am able to understand most people’s point of view in situations even if they seem to be in the wrong. Two other traits I relate to very much, however not as much as the aforementioned traits, are knowledgeable and risk-taker. I am knowledgeable not only in the sense that I am intelligent but also that I am on a journey of seeking higher knowledge and the secrets the world has to offer me. Knowledgeable can help me in my area of risk-taking by allowing me to not take risks that will produce a dangerous outcome. I am a risk-taker in my personal life more than my educational one because I find joy in new experiences and enjoy being adventurous and taking risks. The traits that I particularly relate to are balanced, a thinker, and reflective. I view myself as a thinker due to the immense amount of time I spend pondering the spiritual aspect of life. Although I would possibly describe myself as a thinker, I would have a harder time describing myself as reflective because I prefer to live in the now and not reflect back onto my sad past. Balanced is a trait that I see in myself but I also me failing at being balanced always. I tend to balance time between friends poorly, however not by intention. Also, I need to work on balancing my time spent on projects and assignments in school. The traits on the list I relate to the least are principled, inquirer, and communicator. I read an interesting article by Alicia Shepard called, A's for Everyone! Shepard has written for many exclusive magazines including the New York times and People magazine. Her expertise mainly involves media. She has also received a masters in journalism and a honors in English (Women's Media Center). The essay's main point of interest is talking about of students and parents expecting the highest possible grade for everyone. This is a perfect time to discuss an article like this as us college students move into our first semester of classes.
Worrying too much about grades can cause students serious problems like not really understanding the work, make them not feel smart enough and lose interest in school and can cause anxiety and other health issues. When I took the MBTI, some of the things I knew about myself were reinforced, and I also learned some new things about myself and my personality. The four letter code that I received was ISTJ, representing introversion, sensing, thinking, and judging. I expected each of these preferences, and when I read the definition of each, it further strengthened my understanding of what my personality really means in “technical terms.” My four letter code came with titles such as the Duty Fulfiller, the Responsible Realist and the Inspector, names I also agree that pertain to myself. Some of the attributes of an ISTJ personality type include serious and quiet, dependable, well-organized, hard-working, goal-striving, determined, logic-based, orderly, and traditional. If I were asked to describe myself, I would more than likely use nearly all of these terms to do so, which goes to show how accurate this test was, for me at least. But, I also can pick out some challenges that may arise because of the personality type that I am. One example relates to being an introvert, who prefer to focus on one thing at a time.
My Keirsey Temperament Sorter results indicate my personality type is that of a Guardian and make-up about 40 – 50 percent of the population. Guardians use their skills to keep everything running smoothly, have a lot of fun with family and friends, but serious when it comes to responsibilities. Characteristics include dependable, humble, trustworthy, loyal, helpful, hardworking, and stabilizing leaders. I’m the type of person that follows schedules and deadlines, but also likes to have fun and enjoy life. There should be a balance, and like the saying goes, work hard and play hard.
Overall, the INTJ type is an accurate description of my personality. I concur with the assessments that INTJ’s do not “take criticism personally” and they are not “afraid of hard work, and will put forth a great deal of effort towards something that they are interested in” (INTJ Personal Growth, 2014). I am confident in my own abilities and take no offense at work if others are able to show me a better/easier way of performing a task (as long I am approached professionally). Additionally, I am usually whole-heartedly committed toward efforts when I see the importance or benefit from such actions. For example, if I need to put in a few 15-16 hours days to ensure the job is done on-time and correctly I will do so without much thought. My temperament of “NT” also known as the “Rationals” is consistent with what I see in myself (The Four Temperaments, 2014). First, by reading over my results it was very helpful to understand why I like putting others before myself, defending those who need it, and always serving others because I am the defender and that’s what 13% of the people around the world do. It is also helpful to understand why I am shyer and introverted because I put others before myself and I serve them. I also felt that by knowing what I am stronger at or weaker of so I know how to approach any situation in the future. The one thing that I found to be least helpful is that even though I know my negative traits, it will be very hard to break those habits because those qualities define who I am. Three aspects of my personality are avoidant, high on conscientiousness and a high need for achievement. These personality characteristics were studied using different theories, the attachment theory, Big Five, and the motivational theory. Together, these aspects make me who I am. I am an intuitive-feeling personality. I am charismatic, participative and very people oriented. I tend to focus on the big picture and not the small specifics. I am not power hungry and try to be helpful and giving to those around me.
I am an ISTJ with unique personality strengths and weaknesses. My strengthens are being hardworking, productive, efficient, and driven (Kroeger, Thuesen, & Rutledge, 2002, p. 306). In opposition, being compulsive, inexpressive, and driven by routines are my weaknesses (Kroeger et al, 2002, pp. 308-309).
