Bzzzz! It was the start of the fourth quarter of the fifth-grade championship basketball game, and we had the lead. Thirty-eight to twenty-three. With only an eight-minute quarter ahead of us, we were confident that we had this game in the bag. By this time, we thought we were invincible, after all, we were undefeated, and we did a comfortable lead. But quickly, this confidence began to reveal itself in our play. We slowed down and lowered our intensity. The aggressiveness and relentlessness that brought us this far were suddenly replaced by passiveness and laziness. Sloppy passes left and right, not taking care of the ball, and hands down on defense. Our fight was gone.
However, our opponents never let up. They saw our quality of basketball drop in spite of our overconfidence and bit at this opportunity. They began to cut down the lead, and quickly. Forty-one to thirty-four, with four minutes and thirty seconds left to go. We immediately realized that the game was not over yet, so we tried to pick up the pace once again. But all the rhythm and momentum we once had was lost. They took control of the game, scoring at will, and completely shutting us down. We could do nothing to stop the mounting comeback, and before we knew it, they were the team with the comfortable lead. Forty-three to fifty with only one minute to go. An undefeated team that had the championship in their hands…are now on the brink of elimination. Trailing for the first time ever we panicked, but it was too late.
Bzzzz! All of us drop to the ground almost simultaneously, heads hanging in sorrow. Shocked, ashamed…broken.
The cause of this shameful defeat came down to us not giving it our all the whole game. We didn’t work hard enough, and ultimately, we got wh...

...ast a ninety-three in all of my classes. A goal I would have never reached if I continued to believe A’s and B’s are enough.
Although it would have nice to have gotten a trophy that says “Champions” instead of “Runner-up”, I am glad I lost that game, as much as it hurt. The loss meant so much to me that it actually taught me an extremely valuable lesson that has ultimately lead me to more success than just a championship. A simple lesson, give it all you got and never be satisfied with where you are, but It has taught me how to be successful on and off the court. I would not be the player nor student I am today if I would not have failed. My failure actually drove me toward success, giving me ability to push myself to better grades, and a more skillful basketball player. Sometimes, all it takes is one failure to hit you the right way, to knock onto a path to success.
In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. Throughout the tournament, NC State kept surviving and advancing. In Johnathan Hock’s documentary “Survive and Advance”, Hock uses stock footage of the games that were played during the tournament, different points of view from the players, and the sequence of the documentary to prove that NC State’s basketball team were the underdogs during the whole tournament; however they were able to win despite their adversity
Recently, I watched my husband, who is neither a fan of UNC or Duke, become anxious over a major upset between UNC and Duke. UNC was leading at half-time; with a 16 point lead and it had been several minutes since Duke scored a basket. However, something that Coach K said to his team in the locker room during half time changed the dynamic of the game. Finally the game ended with Duke beating UNC by a 6 point lead.
Once again, the next year, I was on the All-Star team. This time we were all determined to stay in the tournament and win the championship. We started off lousy, though, making four errors in the first game and losing 4-0. We now had to win every game and beat the last team twice. We did defeat every team we went up against, including the team that beat us the first game, and once again ended up in the championship game.
The game was one sided with us scoring early on then again in the second half. The final score was 2-0. I was ecstatic, I couldn’t believe that we had won the tournament. At the presentation of the trophy, all I could hear was the parents shouting and screaming, I was so proud to be part of the team.
Losing the game for our game must have been one of the most terrible feelings ever. I was so devastated for some time, yet I realized that I needed to get over it and use it as inspiration. Ever since then I’ve trained so hard to get back to state and redeem
Two teams are on the court racing for the ball. The gym is suffocatingly hot and, the students are flailing their arms in the air. The game is a mix of basketball and soccer. Gym class has begun. Blue and yellow jerseys fly throughout the gym with tiny sixth graders inhabiting them. The Yellow team scores and a player picks up the ball forcefully, ready to score once more . The Blue team runs across the gym back and forth like birds stuck in a cage. As the Yellow team scores the heads of the discouraged Blue team hang in disappointment. . The Perspiration is scattered on the bodies of the lively children. The Yellow team begins running for the ball and now looks like a pack of wild animals hunting their prey. They run fiercely towards their victims, each one aiding the next to achieve one goal, to kill. Wisst the sound of the whistle halts the game. Water drips from the water fountain onto the floor . The thirsty children flee the gym. Halftime
To this day, this game haunts me and sometimes I find it hard to sleep at night because I am too busy thinking of what should have been. Looking back, the way to describe the ending to my senior season is disappointment; not only in myself, but in my entire team. Being the only senior it felt like more of betrayal than anything. It felt like my teammates knew they had more than a second chance to redeem themselves so they were not as heartbroken and sympathetic towards the loss and towards
We were going to win the game. That was the end of it. I knew it. We were the winners of that game. I stood up and yelled in a voice that even frightened me. I didn’t scream about moving our feet, or calling the ball, I screamed about how big of winners we were. I was done with moping. For seven minutes of my life, I had forgotten that I could do anything I set my mind to, and I had given up. The worst seven minutes of my volleyball career were those seven minutes in the third game of the final match at Brighton Volleyball Tournament. I had put my determination down to wallow in my disappointment. Disappointment needs to build determination. I had decided a long time ago that there were certain things in life that I could do better than other people. Those were my gifts. I use my gifts to my full potential.
Kentucky’s Riley jumped before the ball was even thrown in the air, so we were given possession. Right away Coach Haskins told our big man David Lattin to throw down vicious dunks in order to send a message. And my goodness, did he! First time he got the ball, he seemed to stuff his armpits inside that rim! But we knew Kentucky wasn't just going to give us this victory, they've been here before, they know what they're doing. David Lattin ended up committing a foul on the Wildcat’s first possession. He needs to be smart! We need him. The game was about dead even until our star player Bobby Joe Hill had two consecutive steals and scored on both of them. The look on Adolph Rupp’s face was priceless. Before the game, he couldn't say one positive thing about Bobby Joe Hill, even acted like he didn't know who he was! Now Bobby is making Rupp’s guards look like JV! Our defense was doing a great job of getting a hand in the shooter’s face, and on offense our ball movement was superb. There were many possessions where we passed it 10 times before shooting. Going into halftime, we were up 31-28. The second half started out as a close one. The first three minutes Kentucky rallied to within a point of us, even tying us, but never got the lead from us. We eventually kept drawing fouls and ended up shooting 27 free-throws, making all but one. We had a nine-point advantage and we were able to control the pace until the final
Throughout my past schools years, I have been the type of student who not only wants but needs, an A. As I am working towards applying to prestigious universities I am working for the best grades I can
The misty damp air gave us the impression that our game could be postponed or at least maybe a game where we would be drenched with other liquids than sweat. The building where we spent the time before the game was filled with the smell of hot dogs and hamburgers. The people preparing them watched us in the thought that we would feel defeat. It put an awkward silence in the room. We were there to prove them wrong and that is what we planned to do. As we got closer to game time the building seemed to fill more with these people who had doubt in us.
Our kicker went on to kick the extra point, as only one minute remained on the time clock. The Clark Cougars went on to beat the Williams Warriors. I could see it now on the front page of the town newspaper. "Clark demolishes Williams for the first time in 14 years!" We finally beat the best team in the world! As we celebrated, and jumped around on the soggy grass, a tear came to my eye. It was all hitting me now. I finally achieved the goal of my life! I could not control the tremendous smirk on my face. As I watched the coach from the opposing team cry in agony, I thought to myself, "That must be what they call the agony of defeat." I knew that the moment of my life I had long waited for, was gone. Only memories are left in my mind, and I cherish every single one of them.
You came to two practices and three games? Here's a trophy. You came to every practice, worked on your own time, and busted your butt to earn that starting position every game? Here's the same exact trophy as everyone else. These overlooked rewards fail to teach people the lessons learned from losing and or how to work for what you want along with taking away the true value of winning.
Down two with six seconds to go fatigue had taken it tolls on the players. With little energy left; over time was not an option. I knew I had to go for the win. I walk on the floor confident of my ability that was until the whistle blew quickly turning my confident to butterflies. As I fought to get open I quickly saw the ball coming my way. As I rose for a jump shot time itself began to stay still. An in flesh everything became silent. As I watch the ball leave my hand I envisioned greatness; sure the ball was on its way in I started to celebrate that was until I hear the announcer say my teammate tip in miss shot to win us the game. Mix with emotion I celebrate with my teammate. “Ok guys, we have 24 hours until tip off. Get some rest because this is going to be the biggest game of your life. Let’s bring this championship back to Barton College. Go Bulldogs and Goodnight!” Why few players stay in the lobby to hang out I took it talk upon to work on my game and reflect on the semifinal game that just took place. At basketball games you will notice how there are all sorts of fans attending the game.
I am committed to getting no less than a B average throughout my academic career, since I to feel confident in my knowledge and skills as I work toward my career goal.
