The prospect of becoming a filmmaker is my true destiny. Discovering this passion of mine was not an immediate epiphany, rather a gradual process and growing love for something that has forever changed me. As I reflect on what influenced my relationship with film I am able to bring it all the way back to my early childhood when I put on elaborate performances in my backyard. My imagination wandered off to far lands where anything was possible, and all I wanted to do was bring people with me. This relates to one of the reasons I am fascinated with film, experiencing a reality in which your mind is completely immersed and intiguid by is truly exceptional. After getting heavily involved with film and animation courses in high school, I realized
I grew up watching Star Wars. Some of my earliest memories were watching the original trilogy on VHS with my grandma. I vividly remember going to theatres to watch the prequels. Words cannot express the emotions I had seeing this worlds and characters come to life before my eyes. Ever since then, I knew that I wanted to make movies. Fast forward a decade or so, there is now a new Star Wars trilogy gearing up and I am going to college to get a degree in Communications.
To put it simply, there is nothing more I would rather do than influence how people see good and the bad in our world, and to me there is only one medium for that, film.
Auteurism is a term first coined by Francois Truffaut to describe the mark of a film director on his films. A director can be considered an auteur if about five of his film depict a certain style that is definitely his own. In other words, much like one can look at a painting and tell if it is a Monet, a Renoir, or a Degas, if a film director is an auteur, one can look at his film and tell by style and recurring themes that it was made by a certain director. In auteur films, the director is many times what brings an audience to the theater, instead of the actors or storyline. I am going to take a look at three of the most noted auteurs: Frederico Fellini, Satyajit Ray, and Alfred Hitchcock.
RH: What inspired you to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and especially as a screenwriter? What kind of training have you had to prepare for these jobs?
With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.
My present interest in art is more graphic/typography based, although I do enjoy all areas of art. I have been designing graphics on my computers from a young age and have work published in national magazines. Not all the graphical work I do is computer based, I enjoy using traditional mediums in a clean graphical way, as I find it more satisfying working on a larger scale and producing something more "real". My current course has helped me "branch out" more; I have experimented in many disciplines successfully producing paintings, pastels and drawings, which I had never really developed fully before.
Movies have always been an inspiration to me through my years growing up. From the first time my friends and I went and saw "Honey I Shrunk The Kids", to "Remember The Titans", I have always enjoyed the compassion and energy these directors and actors have put in into these movies.
When I started my college education, I majored in liberal arts, not knowing what I
As an introverted child, I imagined myself being a wealthy movie producer. I wanted to choose what stories to tell in my movies
In order to choose my exit project, I had to do a lot of thinking and deciding in order to uncover what I would select as my exit project’s subject. Originally, I had several ideas at hand; learning how to produce film, restoring an old camera, building a camera, and learning post production editing. These projects were my original choices because I am a photography enthusiast and amateur. Later on, I realized that these projects weren’t achievable because of the requirements and difficulty level that came along with attempting the projects; I was at a standstill. I contemplated on these choices and eventually discovered an alternative; time lapse photography. Time lapse photography is a form of photography in which a sequence of photos is played at a faster rate. Before choosing time lapse photography as my exit project, I had already seen time lapses before without consciously knowing about it. The timelapses that I watched that were introduced to be via movies, short films, and other forms of visual arts, inspired me in many ways. This inspiration led me to chose time lapse photography as my exit project. Luckily, I had already found a mentor for this project; my father.
“My life is story telling. I believe in stories in their incredible power to keep people alive, to keep the living alive and the dead.”
Cinematic Arts Personal Statement When I think of what I’m most fond of in life, I regrettably find that it will never be possible to experience every single version of that particular entity. I will never get to read every single book that will ever be written, nor will I be able to watch every single film that will ever be made. I will never pet every single dog that will ever exist, nor will I ever smile at every child that will ever live. Perhaps it is this limitedness of life that makes it so interestingly remarkable. Everything has an end, yet most people would rather not entertain such an idea.
Introduction I have always been passionate about working for a Hollywood production company and making my movie a reality. The road there consists of multiple obstacles, each possibly harder to overcome than the previous. The first milestone in one's academic career is the ability to engage in a real world experience, an internship. And this is a challenge to not only me, but also my peers. Upon recognizing this after my first internship with international distributor MarVista Entertainment back in Summer of 2017, I plan to embark on my second internship at some of the most well-known production companies in Hollywood this summer and create a series of marketing materials for the Screen Studies department for my friends, like a survival kit for working in the film industry.
Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
Video editing has gone a long way in technology. It has come from just putting pieces of a film together into adding sound effects, adding filters and adding captions or pictures into the film. I would love to be in as a video editor as it advances in time. I want to see it evolve and become something better than it is now. I can’t wait for my turn in film editing history.
