To put it simply, there is nothing more I would rather do than influence how people see good and the bad in our world, and to me there is only one medium for that, film.
As you probably could have assumed, I love to watch any film I can get my hands on, and my once strong friendships are hanging on by a thread due to hours spent helping on short films of mine. Unlike some applicants, I come from a farming community with no film connection, none of my classmates are interested in pursuing a career like film, my school offers no film courses, and I have no film connection currently. Surely I sound like a poor fit for the Hollywood Reporter’s top film school, you may even wonder why I, without a single connection, would choose this field. Hopeful it may be understood me more through my background.

At the time I had been in boy scouts for almost two years. It was the coming of the digital age and our troop was already swept into the rip curl. Naturally I was surprised when the scoutmaster brought a point and shoot digital camera to a meeting one Sunday night. He thought it would be a good idea for one of us to start taking pictures, sharing our stories with prospective scouts and family members. Around the room no one raised their hand to volunteer for the duty until I felt my hand nervously rising. The camera was something at the time, a waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, dustproof, 14 megapixel Fujifilm with 8x optical zoom. My dad is a determined, hard worker, and from him I learned that I shouldn’t shirk my duties. Therefore, I carried that camera to each monthly outing, service activity, and court of honor for the next four

support your cause. Without the people it is hard to win a war. Thus I feel that with out films contribution to the propaganda effort the WWII would have been very, very different.
Waving to my teammates as I walked out of the tennis courts, the reminiscence of a smile appeared on my face after winning a close match. A freshman teammate joined me and I heard her take a deep breath as soon as we were out of others’ earshot, muttering something nervously. “I’m sorry, what was that?” I asked a little too loudly, the excitement still buzzing. She mustered courage and made sure to speak clearly this time: “I’m being bullied, and I feel so trapped that I only see self-harming as my way out.”
In my life, I had not had the chance to be a part of something that influenced me much, until I joined football my freshman year in high school. Joining football was perhaps the most devoted and wisest thing that I did because shortly after joining I began to see changes for the better, and from then I saw the person that I wanted to be in the future. In other words, it shaped the person that I am today and will be for the rest of my life. Not only did the sport influence me but it also equipped me with a new mindset that affects me today in my decision making skills, time management and many other beneficial life virtues. I believe that these virtues will bring me success in the nearest future because I feel confident about myself and I feel more in control in my life through my actions, all thanks to simply joining what seemed to be a “regular” extracurricular.
It is a common mis-conception that films are merely entertainment, and serve no other purpose than to provide for the viewer a two-hour escape from reality. This is a serious under-estimation of the power, purpose, and potential of film, because film, upon reflection, revea...

Films are necessary in our time period because the human eye can articulate the message intended through sight allowing visual imagination to occur. In the book, world 2 by Max Brooks, he creates a character by the name Roy Elliot who was a former movie director. Roy Elliot manages to make a movie titled “Victory at Avalon: The Battle of the Five Colleges” and some how it goes viral. Similarly, Frank Capra’s film, “Why we Fight” expresses a sense of understanding the meaning of wars. Growing up in a typical middle class family; my upbringing has prepared me for unpredictability and chaos. Fighting with water scarcity problems, load sedding and Nepal bandhs are the kind of tensions and trials that every normal Nepalese family goes through as my country is fighting for stability. However, amidst all of this, my mind was a typhoon thinking what I will be; perhaps a doctor like every family desires or at times a politician for my inner patriot and I even considered acting thanks to my dancing and acting capability. Confused and bewildered, I tried all just to experiment and see what my heart really wants. And then reality hit me last winter when I got an opportunity to intern at a private bank in NepaI.
Across the globe watching movies started as an asylum for the working class, but slowly the ideas being portrayed onscreen have evolved resulting in movie going to become almost religious. Movies have the ability to leave us in awe as a result of their ability to give us a glimpse of a dream, however unrealistic. I myself am a huge fan of the film industry. I started to feel a certain reverence for it because of the way it inspired me to dream and gave birth to my ambitions. This ultimately led to me to go into an in depth investigation of whether I was the only one who felt this way and what affects had been created because of this feeling.
Movies take us inside the skin of people quite different from ourselves and to places different from our routine surroundings. As humans, we always seek enlargement of our being and wanted to be more than ourselves. Each one of us, by nature, sees the world with a perspective and selectivity different from others. But, we want to see the world through other’s eyes; imagine with other’s imaginations; feel with other’s hearts, at a same time as with our own. Movies offer us a window onto the wider world, broadening our perspective and opening our eyes to new wonders.
