Introduction I have always been passionate about working for a Hollywood production company and making my movie a reality. The road there consists of multiple obstacles, each possibly harder to overcome than the previous. The first milestone in one's academic career is the ability to engage in a real world experience, an internship. And this is a challenge to not only me, but also my peers. Upon recognizing this after my first internship with international distributor MarVista Entertainment back in Summer of 2017, I plan to embark on my second internship at some of the most well-known production companies in Hollywood this summer and create a series of marketing materials for the Screen Studies department for my friends, like a survival kit for working in the film industry. Proof of Concept I was very fortunate to be able to participate in an internship with MarVista Entertainment back in Summer 2017. Although prior to this internship I already had a taste of the work environment and professional conduct, this was the first …show more content…
That is when it hit me: what if there is a guide for fellow Clarkies interested in Communications and Media arts to take from. The guidebook I am thinking of does not necessarily contain hard guidelines but rather a mashup between a journal detailing life in LA and company culture as well as helpful tip to survive both the internship and LA life in general, how to utilize your budget economically and how to maintain great relationships even after the internship has ended. And the most important thing I want to discover this summer: how do convert my internship experience into an actual job offer by the end of the summer to provide me security upon my graduation from
Describe some ways in which business values and artistic values in Hollywood contend with one another.
Lisa Cholodenko grew up in Los Angeles and she began her film careers working as an assistant editor; however, she then moved to New York and earned an MFA in screenwriting and direction at the Columbia University School of arts. At Columbia University School of Arts, Cholodenko filmed her first short movie Dinner Party. Besides being a director, Lisa Cholodenko also was a film professor at Columbia University, an advisor and is currently on the Board of Governs of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. It was surprising to be able to find out how active Cholodenko is in the film industry and in the university she attended. This portrays how committed Cholodenko is to creating successful movies and to be a part of others film victory.
As you probably could have assumed, I love to watch any film I can get my hands on, and my once strong friendships are hanging on by a thread due to hours spent helping on short films of mine. Unlike some applicants, I come from a farming community with no film connection, none of my classmates are interested in pursuing a career like film, my school offers no film courses, and I have no film connection currently. Surely I sound like a poor fit for the Hollywood Reporter’s top film school, you may even wonder why I, without a single connection, would choose this field. Hopeful it may be understood me more through my background.

When filmmaking began, it was an art form for the rich. It was very costly to produce a film, and thus the task was left to large Hollywood studios to take charge. These companies owned all the equipment, soundstages and lots and even had most of their cast and crew on long-term contracts . Today, while Hollywood still has most of the same studios that still own equipment and space, crews and actors are rarely contractually bound to any one studio, and everything operates on a case-by-case basis for each production . This Hollywood system works wonders to create big blockbuster films, but caters to those who already have their foot in the door in the industry, while younger filmmakers find themselves funding and producing their projects on
Many people don’t think about it so much, but movies (or just film in general) have become such a big part of our lives that we don’t think much of it because it just feels like a usual part of living. But have you ever wondered why this is, and how far back film started? Movies and film have been around for a long time, have developed in big ways throughout time, and has advanced in such a big and new way to this day.
My internship at 6abc has been a dream come true. For me brushing elbows with a famous journalist like Jim Gardner means more than meeting a famous movie star. The atmosphere in the building is something indescribable and it changes every day, every hour to be precise. When news changes, the atmosphere changes. I have honestly dreamed of working at 6abc since I first realized I wanted to be a broadcaster. Their sense of family on television really grabbed me and I always knew that this was the place I wanted to work. Well I got here, but for only three short months, and it breaks my heart to know that I have to leave. There have been some ups and downs during my experience in the Creative Services department, but I gained a better understanding
In conclusion this author would like to let the reader know that, though an exciting career this is, it is an extremely hard business to break into. It takes a lot of hard work and patience and maybe just a bit of luck.

The film industry has always been somewhat of a dichotomy. Grounded firmly in both the worlds of art and business the balance of artistic expression and commercialization has been an issue throughout the history of filmmaking. The distinction of these two differing goals and the fact that neither has truly won out over the other in the span of the industry's existence, demonstrates a lot of information about the nature of capitalism.
Coming from a Multimedia background, I am incredibly passionate about filming and editing. From an early age, I always loved playing around with cameras, filming as well as editing just anything that I enjoyed watching on TV, or even something filmed by myself. Being so passionate about film and editing have led me to doing my Bachelor of Creative Arts Honours. My goal for this year is to come up with 2 horror short films where I can showcase my skills in both filming and editing, as well as my creative thinking. I was inspired by Blumhouse Productions to come up with my own horror film where I can integrate interactivity within my film.
Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
