Romeo and Juliet, one of the most infamous Shakespearean tragedies, has been greatly influential in the literary world since its publication. The genesis of the ages-old star-crossed lovers storyline, the play set the scene for many modern dramas and romances. We all know that, in the end, both Romeo and Juliet commit suicide for the sake of being with their lover in death, but we lovers of Romeo and Juliet also wonder often whether, if even one detail had been different, both beloved characters could have lived happily ever after. Throughout this play, it is plain that Romeo is the one who made thoughtless decisions that caused he and Juliet’s tragic end, and had he been more cautious, both he and his forbidden wife would have been spared. Had Romeo simply explained that he and Juliet were married and not felt the need to be so mysterious, Tybalt might have paused in his bloodlust out of a desire not to be the murderer of his cousin’s husband. Romeo, yet again, failed to think through his actions and opted for theatrical dramatics, shrouding the truth with a vague speech about his love for Tybalt. Overall, such a speech instigated Tybalt even more and the proceeding duel resulted in Mercutio’s and Tybalt’s deaths. If he had simply been honest and mature by explaining his situation and marriage to Juliet to Tybalt, Mercutio and Tybalt would have lived and Romeo would never have been exiled, and thus Juliet would not have faked her death and driven Romeo to kill himself.
